Thyroid nodule...inconclusive biopsy and possible surgery

Hi Everyone,

I went to the doctors with a pulled neck muscle around 3 months ago and whilst she was examining me she found 2 swollen lymph nodes which she wanted checking out so I was referred for an ultra sound scan. Whilst having my scan they found a small nodule on my thyroid but was reassured that it looked fine but he would be mentioning it on my report. I was then referred to ent by my gp and the consultant there had a good look at my throat etc and seemed unconcerned but wanted the thyroid consultant to look at it. When I got to the thyroid consultant he seemed very concerned  and told me the nodule looked “abnormal” and was sent straight for a biopsy! After a a scary 2 weeks my results have come back as inconclusive and I have been given the option of another biopsy or to have it removed. Forgot to mention that my thyroid is also slightly over active and I have an appt with endricology in Nov.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? My anxiety is through the roof

  • Hello

did you get your thyroid results?

    im going through this now

    xx

  • Hi,

    What were your results?

I desperately need some support. At the end of December I found a lump in my neck and went to the docs. They took bloods and referred me for an ultra sound. Blood tests showed high TSH 19.6 and low t4, compatible with primary hypothyroidism. Also have family history of hypothyroidism. Went for the US end of Jan and was told U4 single nodule, hypo echoic, solid and vascular 29mm. Since that day I have not been able to switch my brain off and am so scared of what is to come. I have a 9 month old baby. Referred on 2week wait and saw ENT. Went for FNA beginning of Feb which came back inconclusive. Went for core biopsy last week and now anxiously waiting results. I'm struggling to get through the days and can't stop thinking I have cancer

  • Hi,

Im also in a very similar situation and am terrified.

    have you had Fna?

  • Hi,

I am in a very similar situation. Please can I ask what your outcome was? Thanks

  • Hi,

im also going through the same. How did you get on? I have a U4 and waiting for core results. First fna was inconclusive.

  • Hi,

I'm going through this too. How is your journey going?

  • Hi

so I was in hospital for something else and they found thyroid nodule 3.5cm on MRI , attended as outpatient a week later for ultrasound where they found 2 subsequent nodules and took fna .
i have waited over 2 weeks and no results .

yesterday I rang the secretary of consultant I was originally Under and she apologised said she would get the dr to do a letter and she would call me .

within half an hour I got a call from ENT who said I have an urgent referral and have an appointment this Wednesday ?!
so I am assuming the worst as when he did the ultrasound he said if you need operation it will be ENT .

So now have to wait .

has anyone else had this referral with no results

  • Was wondering how you were keeping as missed the last time you posted back to me on here so really sorry for that.

Hope everything has went well for you.

  • Hi. I was just wondering if you eved had any more symptoms? I was told that my thyroid lump was a cyst and didn't need any further investigation. I had 2 separate ultrasounds and was told both times that it was purely cystic. I've recently had painful lymph nodes (although they have been swollen on and off for a couple of years now) and a feeling of fullness in my left ear and down the side of my neck. I sometimes need to clear my throat as it feels like there's phlegm stuck there. I went for another ultrasound last week and the sonographef said my lymph nodes look reactive and that I have a U3 nodule on the right lobe of my thyroid. I'm waiting for a biopsy appointment right now and I'm absolutely terrified. What if I've had thyroid cancer this whole time and it's spread to my lymph nodes. I'm so scared and I'm struggling to get through the days. I dread waking up in the morning because I can't bear to feel the blocked ear and painful nodes. I'm a total wreck and my family are at their wits end It's the lymph nodes that are worrying me sick. They haven't been right for a long time. Sorry to whittle on.

  • You probably don't have thyroid cancer (well, almost certainly) but even if you did, spread to the lymph nodes does not change the prognosis of thyroid cancer much. It would be a slightly bigger operation and they might do radioiodine treatment afterwards; that's all. The chances of recovery would still be very close to 100%, especially if the '85 refers to your year of birth.

I probably had thyroid cancer for at least five years before it was diagnosed and it had spread to 8 lymph nodes. I was back at work a month after the operation and am fine.
