Thyroid nodule...inconclusive biopsy and possible surgery

Hi Everyone,

I went to the doctors with a pulled neck muscle around 3 months ago and whilst she was examining me she found 2 swollen lymph nodes which she wanted checking out so I was referred for an ultra sound scan. Whilst having my scan they found a small nodule on my thyroid but was reassured that it looked fine but he would be mentioning it on my report. I was then referred to ent by my gp and the consultant there had a good look at my throat etc and seemed unconcerned but wanted the thyroid consultant to look at it. When I got to the thyroid consultant he seemed very concerned  and told me the nodule looked “abnormal” and was sent straight for a biopsy! After a a scary 2 weeks my results have come back as inconclusive and I have been given the option of another biopsy or to have it removed. Forgot to mention that my thyroid is also slightly over active and I have an appt with endricology in Nov.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? My anxiety is through the roof

  • Thank you Becksxxx

I just want some answers really as i'm going out of my mind.

Do you have a lump on your neck? Does it look big? I can't tell if mine is big or not. I think the fact i can see it sticking out probably means it is.

  • Sometimes i feel like my throat is a bit blocked (like phlem is stuck down there) but other than that, i think the blocked ear may be due to stress as i didnt have that before i found the lump. Only once i started panicking but without a doctor examining me, i have no idea. I guess the only way i'll know is by having the ultra sound but my experience so far sounds a lot like yours.

  • I have quite a few neck lumps, some are lymph nodes for sure I have a lot of them. And a sore throat and ear pain, some of the lumps are quite small then I have this weird thing that moves that feed quite big but you can't see it from the outside!

hope you get answers soon x

  • Hey,

I actually had surgery in December 2018 to remove half of my thyroid and the nodule which was of concern. Thankfully it turned out to be completely benign (the head of ENT did say to me before surgery he thought the chances of it being cancerous were slim, which they say is the case for the majority of thyroid nodules however because I had a few conflicting opinions from other consultants, he felt it was best to remove the lump and test it, rather than to be at risk of it being something nasty)

If the consultant have said they are not concerned then trust them - I know that's easier said than done (believe me I've been in your shoes!) but they do know what's best. I've actually got a 3/4cm nodule on the remaining half of my thyroid which was checked at the start of the year, it had been scanned and they discharged me as it's of no concern whatsoever. Hopefully that gives you a little piece of mind. You know your own body, if you notice any changes in size etc then always get it checked out. If I can answer any other questions please let me know x

  • Hi everyone

I'm new here and have valued reading your posts here. I had a partial thyroid lobectomy yesterday as two biopsies have failed to determine whether my nodule is benign or malignant. I think the first came back Thy3a and the second Thy3f but I've never completely understood those terms. The nodule was an incidental finding on a scan for something else over a year ago. I don't believe I have any symptoms but sometimes I think my mind plays tricks on me. It has been a really long time to get to this point. I was told I needed the operation just before lockdown but that i would have to wait for lockdown to ease before they could schedule cases like mine. It has been a very long 15 weeks of working full time, looking after two small kids and worrying almost non stop. I am so exhausted. Now I have to wait another 2 weeks for the results. Hope everyone else waiting and wondering is able to stay strong.

  • Hello

Waiting is the worst part. I am sorry you had to wait all through lock down too. What symptoms did you think you have?

I have thy3 as well, 6 months after its being benign. It's grown 7mm too and I don't like the look of the lymph node on the side of the lump which is enlarged and hurts.

My operation is in a couple of days time (Mon 13th), then waiting for results, like you have at the moment

In hope all goes well for you.

  • Had CT scan about a month ago, got results last week which mentiones a couple of other things which do not seem serious,. Although at the end it said Ihad a nodule on my thyroid which was found by chance . I then had a consultation on the telephone a few days ago and was told I would need another scan/x-ray to get a closer look at the nodule  They were unable to tell me whether the nodule was benign or cancer but was told they are siding with it being benign. What I am worried about is that I have had a sort of clear my throat cough which comes and goes since the start of the year. Does anyone know if a benign nodule can still cause symptoms like a cough. Thanks

  • Biopsy is the only way to know. I had no symptoms apart from noticing a lump at front of neck, tired and feeling of having to clear my throat. My blood work was "normal" and the nodule turned out to be cancerous. Thankfully it was slow growing and found it in time (by chance during a gp visit).

The endocrinologist had me thinking it was going to be benign. Not trying to worry you but make sure you're happy with level of investigation done on it...for your own peace of mind. Every case is different. If the lump is solid and showing calcification characteristics on the ultrasound, it CAN indicate malignant characteristics. Don't jump to conclusions until you have your follow up though.

Anything you wana know, post here. People are very good at replying.

  • Thanks and yes I am aware that it may be cancerous or benign.

Really just wanted to know if you can get a clearing of the throat cough even with a benig nodule or if anybody else had a similar cough and it ended up being benign.

    Hope you doing well though.

  • Hello there,

Benign nodule can easily cause all sorts of symptoms. Sonographer told me, the larger it is, the more you will feel it.

Unfortunately quite often they  cannot say from US scan if its cancerous or not.

When I had my scan done, it came back as U3, which means "unidentified". It had characteristics of both benign and cancerous nodules. Next step was FNA (biopsy), when they put a needle in your neck a few times and get some cells for tests.

First time, half a year ago it came back as Thy2, which is benign.  But very often it comes back as Thy3, which, again,  means they cannot say what it is. Then the only way to find out is to remove half a thyroid with the nodule and send it to lab.

My second biopsy half a year later came as Thy3a (atypical), and I now had operation to take it out. But still didn't get results on if its cancer or not. It's a 3 weeks wait and I should know next week hopefully.

If yours is causing you discomfort, it is very likely it will be removed, even if it comes back as benign after biopsy. Mine came to the point of constant earache, jaw ache, weird cough and sensations when swallowing. It was pretty large, 7x5cm. Now when it's gone, I couldn't believe how thinner my neck looks.
