Three weeks of heavy vaginal bleeding, very worried

I am 46 years old. Last year I went for a bladder scan and they found that the lining of the womb was abnormally thick ( but I had not had a period for 70 days). I had a biopsy which was normal but nothing else was done. My periods returned with no problems until May of this year when I had another two month gap. I came on again on the 29th July which was light for a few days but turned into 2-3 inch clots and very heavy. The clots seem to have gone but the bleeding is still heavy three weeks later. It was so bad last weekend that I went to A and E but typically it slowed down while I was there so no scan was done. I have been referred for a scan on the 3rd September but I am so worried I have booked a private one next week. The bleeding is heavy and bright red and I have pain in my right leg. I have previously suffered from ovarian cysts but it never affected my cycle. I only have one ovary now as one was removed due to a cyst. My doctor has fond blood work which was normal and included thyroid and menopause tests which came back normal and not menopausal. He prescribed Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding but I haven’t taken it yet as I want the bleeding to stop on it’s own.

sorry about all the information. I sm meant to be starting my first teaching job in three weeks and a PhD. I am very worried that my symptoms point to something sinister. I hope it is ok to post on here. I would appreciate any advice or if anyone has had similar and it had been ok.

  • Hi,

Like others have said, thanks so much for your post. This is the only place I have found others with similar symptoms. I feel like this is something hard anyone speaks about.

How are you now? I have very similar symptoms, bleeding for 22 days the past few excessively. I have a pain in my left side and in the top of my right leg. Am feeling weak and exhausted. Ultrasound showed thickened endimitrium bloods OK but symptoms still concerning.

    Do you have any advice?

  • Hello all,

    New to this...

    I'm 52 and having similiar issues !!

No period since last July, then BOOM... 1st March back with fury.

Had a 3 day rest, then back again even worse, l put myself on Ferragrad after the 1st week, as l knew my iron would be depleting very quickly.

Spoke to the Dr today and have now taken my second dose of Tranexamic Acid, so lets hope it works??

Was abit worried as it talks about clotting and after having my 1st Covid AZ jab last week your mind starts going into over-drive!!

Dr said if it doesn't work then l should think about a hormone pill or coil...which l certainly don't want to if l'm close to menopause??

After scans afew years back, it showed a couple of fibroids, which most of us have ??

Relived to read others in a similar postion.

Any reasuring views out there ??

FOLLOW UP - Tranexamic pills worked -  2 pills 3 x a day for 4 days, but the last day l did go down to 1 pill 3 x times - all back to normal by 28th phew - Just incase someone is still reading this for reassurance.

They did make me feel very tired though, but glad l stuck it out and pleased to have finished them

    Best wishes:happy:

  • Hi all,

reading everyone's comments on this has given me some comfort as now I know I'm not the only person going through this. I am 22 and I have been bleeding very heavily for 3 months now It got so heavy that I was soaking through 2 pads every 20 minutes and ended up in A&E. I got prescribed transexamic acid and ponston forte and they have helped reduce the bleeding but it's still there. I am also on the mini pill cerazette for a month and hasn't helped much at all. I have anemia now due to all the bleeding and have to take folic acid and iron everyday. It's really depressing me as I'm 22 and feel like I can't live my life properly. I got a ultrasound and that showed up that the lining of my womb was double the amount it should be even with all the bleeding. So now I'm being referred to a gynaecologist and also have to get a smear test.

  • Hello Becks12

Sorry to hear you are going through this, especially at your age.

Stay with the Transexamic as prescribed because they will help, maybe not stop the bleeding altogether but at least ease it?

It is very frightening when non stop bleeding is happening but its great you have a gyne appt soon. They will get you sorted.

Yes its reasurring reading these posts to know you're not alone

Keep us informed and try not to worry lovely - (l know its easier said)

  • Hi,

interested to read your post about having experienced a bleed after having Covid jab.  I'm 52 as well and haven't had a period for 2 years.  Then 6 weeks after my 1st Astra Zeneca jab, wham! Suddenly bleeding again like a heavy period.  Thankfully it only lasted a few days and subsided on its own.  I phoned Dr about it and was referred on 2 week fast track to see a gynaecologist.  Had a vaginal ultrasound which showed my endometrium is thickened (4mm normal - and mine was 7mm).  Therefore had a hysteroscopy and biopsy taken to check for any abnormal cells.  Had that done 2 days ago and now waiting for results.    Interestingly, many women are reporting abnormal menstrual bleeding (including menopausal women who have have stopped their periods) since having the Covid jab.
The point of my post on this forum is to raise awareness of this and advise that if anyone has similarly had an abnormal bleed after the jab, then you can report it, and this data can be referred to the pharma companies so that it can be considered as a potential side effect of the vaccine.
Below are a couple of links, including a link where you can report any adverse side effects which you think you may have experienced post-jab.
Thanks for reading... take care xx

  • Hello Murf,

    Thanks thats really interesting.

I am due my 2nd jab very soon and will be interested to see if the same thing happens again, after looking the article you gave a link to, l think it may happen again?? (really hope not  ).

I have had a very heavy but normal lasting period since the deluge.

If it should happen again then l will definately report it, as that would be too much of a coincidence ?

Hope all goes well with your situation.

    Best wishes

    xx

  • Hi,

I just thought I would pop on and give an update I was supposed to be having a D&C, Hystroscopy and biopsy the end of August but am now having it next week instead as a sample of cells they took are very worrying and they think it may be stage one or stage two cancer they said there is a very slim chance that this is wrong. I can't believe it as I am only 22 and they said I don't have a lot of risk factors. They are shocked themselves. I won't be 100% sure if it's cancer for another three weeks.

  • Hello Ihad a scan and a camera in side my uterus and was very painful and i had itdone under anaesthetic.  While under anaesthtetic they remove two large cysts.  then i was given the choice of a merina coil or tsblet and i was nver told tha they suspected cancer as i was bleeding from the uterus and scan showed a thick lining of the womb.  I was just told that I had cells that were not flat but round.  I had goodled what causes bleeding fro the uterus and one of the answers was cancer.  But not once did theysay this and not once did the consultant tell what was wrong.  i asked but never got a proper answer.  I was going through alot at the time as I had just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and had to struglle with this all on my own and care for a husband who Ihad been a carer for since 2006 and had gone out to work to support nothof us fulltime and worked long hours.  I had themerinacoil inserted and the ward i was on was disgusting .  i was left there and not one did a nurse come to me and ask how i was or if i was in pain if i needed pain killer.  i was in alot of pain and could not get their attention so coiled up and trued to sleep.  But after that i was in horrendous pain so much i could not walk  or stand for more then a 3 miutes and i would be keeling over in pain.  i was like that for 6 minths and GP just aid just have to put up with this till it settles.  No one told me of this .  And after sixmonths itwas less pain but still was having pain was uncomfotable.  For 2 and half years i had to go back every 6 months for a biopsy.  I then asked how long i needed to have this in me as was cauding me alot of uncomfortableness and so one more if okay then i was okay to have it removed.  i had it removed and again bleeding again .  I then went to my GPand demanded to know what it was and why i had this coil and she told me then it was suspected cancer.  I was clear.  But never was it discussed and  I asked for my notes from the hospital and when i read them i saw that I had a D and C which I was not told about and that also that i had polyps but they were not cancerous It had show that the cells were multiplying which showed cancer was forming early stages.  Not once did they tell me all this.  It was all hidden from me.  I found this annoying as this is my body and to hide it from me was just awful.  I have gone through alot but I have been treated by GPs qualified I must and this Gyno in a cold hard manner.  I just feel I have to hold myself even now as I am treated in a callous way by doctors .  If i dont hold myself together i will breakdown and cry.  I jusr wonder why i am treated like this.  I feel i am disliked and look down upon in a condescending and demeaning way..  The only doctors that treat me with kindness and listen to me is student GPs at my surgery who  I feel safer with as they seem more like human beings who have feelings.  I hope you did not have my experience when you had the merina coil put in.  No one tells you the pain of having it inserted and also having it removed and it getting used to your body when inserted in.  i hope I never have to have this done again .  I would refused.  Nver want to experience this again.
