Could I have bowel cancer at 21?

Hello, I'm a 21 year old female, turning 22 soon. Around two weeks ago I went to the toilet normally and noticed a lot of blood in the toilet bowl. As it was quite heavy I presumed it was my period but when wiping I realised it was from my back passage. Worried as it was just dripping out the next few times i used the toilet I made and appointment with my gp. My gp assessed me and said that it was not be piles and reffered me as a surgical outpatient at my local hospital for further assessment. Since this all happened I have been suffering from severe cramping and diarrhea, and nausea. I have also lost a lot of weight in the past few months going down nearly two clothing sizes. My appointment is on Thursday, however I am so worried and hoping someone may have any advice? Thanks!!

  •  Hi lampshade 96 , I am not Dr. by the symptoms you are mentioning sounds like diverticulitis or leave you’re  gluten intolerant.I have the reticulitis is those are some of the symptoms I get sometimes it is not a deadly disease but you have to treat it . Will you please let us know what the doctor says. Keep us updated and good luck on your appointment you’ll be fine

  • Hello,

Thanks for your reply! I'm not one to worry, however I am very worried about this as I have been so ill the past two weeks. I will let you know how my appointment goes. I hope you are well.

    Thanks x

  • Hi Lampshade96.

Bowel cancer at 21 is incredibly rare, with there being only a couple of cases each year in the UK. There are also many more common diseases that this could be.

I would expect you'll be referred for a colonoscopy, for which the preparation before hand is usually the worst part. Please let us know how you get on.

  • Hello,

Thanks both for your replies. I attended the doctors and had a camera through my back passage. There was no sign of why the bleeding came from there and they believe the problem is further up. I have an another appointment to have a camera put down my mouth to view the top of my stomach etc.. Hopefully it isn't anything to bad, I feel a bit more at ease after speaking with my doctor.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi.

By coincidence, a couple of days ago I took a friend to her hospital appointment to have a gastroscopy.  The procedure only takes about 10 minutes, but you should take up the option of having sedation, so they'll keep you for about an hour afterwards before letting you go home. You will need to be accompanied.  My friend reported that it really wasn't as bad as she had feared, and her results found the cause of her digestive problems, which fortunately can be easily treated and weren't cancer.

  • Hi i am 20 and currently going through the same thing! I waa wondering if you ever found out what the problem was, im abit worried i might have something sinister wrong with me
