Colonoscopy after effects !

Hi all

I have had a colonoscopy on Friday just gone everything went well and a small polyp was removed from rectum and 6 biopsies were taken ( including polyp ) I knew they were taking 5 or more biopsies from all diff places of colon etc because my consultant had told me.

When I had seen the consultant on the 2nd / 3 rd of July he had said my app will be made within 6-8 weeks but 8 days later I was offered a Saturday app just out the blue a cancellation app . Anyhow I couldn't take it being I have yo get things set up into place for my young child . Anyhow they had given me adate for the following Friday 20 th so I took that one . Just a quick symptoms since having it felt dizzy a little and disorientated for a few days after I only been feeling right since yestedsay had funny pains in left arm I think it was where I was leaning on  it through procedure . I had b/m since the Friday so that was good thing and thought my bowel n bladder is working . Then Sunday I had a maroon clot like a kidney bean shape. No temp no fresh blood I called my doctor too on Monday to have a telephone app my doctor said as long as it not fresh then it's ok and if clots carry on come and see me . I had had panick / anxiety attacks over the weekend sat night was really bad carried on for five hours .

Anyhow thry have gone now but I'm worried as I feel like I need to go toilet still even though I been a little this morning !

I don't want to phone the unit up as they prob tell me to go in and I don't can't stand hospitals I cannot be dealing with it all.

Im sure my bowels are ok so four five days after it feels like I have constipation even though since Friday it's all been mashy runny !

aldo what is frightening me is the results as the hospyral said 6-8 weeks why so long ? When everyone is saying 3 weeks ?? I'm confused and scared and taking Day by day

reasons why my doctor referred me were

bowel changes from 2014 and for worse and was affecting my life I should of seen doctor earlier but was scared too there's a few cancers in the family and had freaked MeV right out

I also had blood in my poo last year October every other day !

Anyhow very much appreciate people advicing me I see my doctor prob next week as she said she wants to see me for a routine app . Another thing is I do feel right around my back kidneys etc. Thank you for any advice

  • Hi Debsparks.

I am not a doctor, but I have had quite a few appointments.

With respect, you're letting your imagination run away with you.  They've taken six biopsies, all of which might be expected to cause a small amount of bleeding, so passing a clot isn't unexpected.  If they'd seen anything wrong during the procedure, they would have told you immediately afterwards, so clearly taking the biopsies was just a formality.

I've found that doctors don't really know how the appointments system runs in their own hospitals! Doctors do the doctoring, administrators do the administering, and just as administrators don't really understand what the doctors do, so the doctors don't really understand what the administrators do.  This means that most doctors only have the vaguest idea of waiting times in their own department, and frequently get it wrong. Consultants are worst of all when it comes to estimating waiting times.

This means that when a doctor tells you to expect an appointment in 6-8 weeks, it could come tomorrow, or it could come in three months time, because arranging appointments is a job for administrators, and the system works best of all if the doctors do the doctoring and don't interfere with the administrating.

So, stop stressing out over trivial matters. See your GP as requested. Go the follow up appointment when it comes. Stop panicking.

  • Hi

I think your message the way it's written was not on thank you for your advice

I was actually asking if anyone has had constipation after a colonoscopy !

and they take biopsies to test and maybe from that they can tell what is up with me because that's what the consultant said about taking biospes sometimes it gives them a answer about why blood and diff bm are happening

plus they cannot see cancer through layers on the camera if you have it in your layers of skin obvously they can pick up on things that are there . Well anyway that's what I was told by consultant I'm just going on about what they tell MeV

so thank you for your message hope u feel better now !

    Thank u v much

  • Hi Debsparks.

I'm sorry if you thought my answer was inappropriate. It can be very difficult when someone posts a long message to discern just what the question asker wants to know. On re-reading your post, you mention constipation just once, but don't ask a specific question about it - you just ask for general advice. In my experience, what people really want on this forum is reassurance.  I still think that this is what you need most of all.

In preparation for the colonoscopy, your colon needs to be emptied, and see all know what that's like.  Afterwards, it may take a day or two to refill, and some upset in the form of diarrhoea or constipation is not surprising. It shouldn't last for more than a day or two, and some people find a stool softener helps - however, in your case I don't think you should do this without checking with your GP first.

  • Hun thank you for your advice

and yes reassurance yep that's what I need everyone needs :)

    thank you for your reply

only reason I was worried because I had been going since Friday since I got back then Sunday Monday felt abit bunged up or what ever day it was then yesterday morning I think it was or last night I went . But my back is still hurting me abit I feel like I been kicked there but I'm sure I be ok :) Thank you

  • Update bit late but forgot about this post

polyp was found in rectum hence what the bleeding was and they actually did a colonoscopy being my symptoms and my family history .

    so one polyp

and bleeding has stopped now thank heavens it had stopped after .
so that was the cause of my bleeding my doctor had said

    just a update .

  • Had large polyp removed 4 days ago no bowel movement but have leakage any advice what I should do

  • Hello Megs47,

the bowel really hates being tampered with and will take a few weeks to settle back down into a routine.Be aware of possible constipation, and speak to your doctor  who could prescribe something to help things along. So as long as their is no pain or other symptoms l would say relax,no stress and give it some time, and l am sure it will return to normal,

  • I was dreading my appt for a Colonoscopy which I had on Mon just gone, I opted for sedation as I was so nervous but it didn’t work I could feel everything I put my hand up at one point to stop but he said nearly finished now ure doing really well!!!!! I wondered if anyone had experienced sedation not working it was painful but thankfully he told me straight away no cancer but IBD diagnosed.

  • Hello elc29,

l think you have just explained why the sedation did not work for you.If you approach with the attitude that you really, really, really hope it works,as opposed to the no worries and l will have a nice little doze, the adrenaline surge will beat the intended effect of the relaxant.Glad to read you got a diagnosis and it was not the nightmare you imagined,

                                                                    David

  • Hi,

I'm afraid the sedation is only there to make you feel more relaxed, it isn't intended as an anaesthetic or an analgesic. Someone should have explained this to you before the procedure started.

Hopefully the relief of having cancer ruled out will outweigh the discomfort and fear that you have been through.

    Best wishes

    Dave
