Endoscopy and biopsy taken

Hi, I had an endoscopy yesterday and they took a biopsy and it just extremely scared that it could be cancer. Do they only take biopsies to test or cancer or could it be something else? I'm only 22 and just so scared. Any help would be appreciated, especially help on how to stay calm during the waiting period for results.

  • HI everyone,

I never use social media but felt the need to just connect. I too have had a colonoscopy and endoscopy recently. I was hoping to get the results yesterday but was told that it's being dealt with and that I can have a telephone appointment in order that the doctor can share these with me.

I have to say I would rather the receptionist just read the result out and I know that often they do just say things like 'your results are fine', or 'it was negative', so if anything this is a bit stressful.

I am glad that others share their experiences.  I already feel a bit better having read what you have all written.  And this is coming from a very confident, nerves of steel human being but lets face it that all goes out the window if your health is in question.

    Kind regards.

  • Hi,

I have had a sore throat and further symptoms for 4 months now. I have recently been to the hospital to have a camera down my throat. Doctor said everything looked fine apart from my tonsils were a little swollen. I have seen that others have had MRI and biopsy's to check if there was anything. My doctor hasn't mentioned any of these. I'm worried they may miss something. I don't feel like myself at all and I'm fed up of not getting an answer. Should i question why I'm not having a biopsy or anything? Not sure what there next steps are going to be after the appointment I've just attended.

  • Hi Karianne.

Were you not given any indication of what they saw during these procedures?  After my colonoscopy I was given a written report that said they'd seen diverticular disease and removed one low-risk polyp.

I can understand that if they've removed polyps, etc, then those need to go to the lab and you'll hear the results later, but my understanding is that once a polyp is removed, the actual risk to you is also removed.

  • Hi Telemando,

Thank you for your reply. There was one polyp removed and some biopsies. There wasn't any indication of the reason however I know overall I was referred based on Qfit test results and anaemia.  It seems rediculous to me that I'm not analysing the letter and trying to work it all out I would certainly be doing that for someone else but it's a bit scary doing it for oneself.

I hope you have a lovely day. I think someone said in a previous post that they work to take their mind off things ... that's my plan for today.

    Best wishes

  • I think there are huge number of house that get redecorated, spring cleaned, repainted, etc while waiting for results!

  • I've been very interested to read these posts as I have just had a very similar experience.

I had an endoscopy (stomach - gastroscopy) yesterday.

When seeing the nurse and reading the report afterwards I was initially encouraged. The report said "the whole upper gastrointestinal tract was normal". But then it said that FOUR duodenal biopsies were taken.

The nurse said that this was to check for coeliac disease which is fine, but why would they take FOUR? Is there something they're not telling me? It has slightly freaked me out.

  • Hi Scott-Free,

I did have four taken i think two from two diferent sites. I thought I was to receive the results a week or so ago but actually the GP just had the report I had. I am to return for a second colonoscopy using a side-view scope.

I was originally referred as a result of a positive q-fit test and anaemia.

I hope you get a quick response.

    kind regards.

  • Hi, did you ever find out what was causing your sore throats? My son (who has learning difficulties) has been suffering with sore throats for 3 years now. He refuses an endoscopy, so it’s difficult to get a diagnosis. He has had a barium meal, which has shown a hiatus hernia, but nothing too significant.

  • Hi karbre.  Never really got to the root of it. Most likely it's due to fibromyalgia.  I was diagnosed with this a few months before the throats started, and sore throats are a common symptom of fibro.
