Endoscopy and biopsy taken

Hi, I had an endoscopy yesterday and they took a biopsy and it just extremely scared that it could be cancer. Do they only take biopsies to test or cancer or could it be something else? I'm only 22 and just so scared. Any help would be appreciated, especially help on how to stay calm during the waiting period for results.

  • Hi i had a gastrocopy 27.02.18, ive got a

  • Hi Charlotte45. Welcome to the forum.

I must remind you that i'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

It's good news that you don't have stomach cancer, although I imagine the gastritis is pretty miserable.

Regarding the gastritis, have you reported back to your GP?  Maybe the GP can give you something like Omeprazole to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach. Worth asking.

Have you been taking Ibuprofen and aspirin on an empty stomach?  That is a definite no-no. Again, it's something to discuss with your GP.

  • Thankyou for the welcome, im currently taking to no avail lansoprazole 30mg also on amitriptyline 50mg that was given for a nose problem but helps with my fibromyalgia, um ive not mentioned cancer an I'll await biopsy result before saying i've not got cancer as unsure as can become erosive, I've had projectvile vomit april to july 2016 i went to my doctors was only refered for endscopy january this yr follow up 7th may waiting game now cancer rife in my family both sides

  • Hi I had a small carcinoma removed from my oesphagus last year, and im now having halo ablation treatment on my oesophagus.im due for my next halo in april and will be having a pre halo endoscopy at the end of this month.so I've had quite a few endoscopies this past year.and I have biopsies taken every time just to check whats going on.but I also have a written report given to me as well.im not medically trained but I would think that if you're doctors had suspected anything serious they would have taken far more than a single biopsy.I haven't noticed anymore replies from you and hope everything has turned out well.

    Best wishes james

  • Hello.

I had a gastroscopy by urgent GP referral last Thursday, 25/7. The procedure was done without sedation because I was there alone.

They took 7 biopsies and I felt every single one of them. It was very painful. There was one taken  from my stomach and 6 samples from 3 different places in my esophagus. Was this completely necessary if it was just routine sampling? Or does it mean they suspected cancer?

  • I had a colonoscopy today and whist it was happening the registrar said he would take biopsies of an area of that looked like a small ulcer and he then took several more in the lower bowel - he said - to be on the safe side.

When I was discharged however, the nurse said they were not sending any biopsies to pathology. I’m a bit puzzled by that.

I know they didn’t see anything urgent re cancer but I would have thought if they took biopsies they would analyse them. Or do they do so there and then?

I know I need to talk to my GP but I just wondered if biopsies are ever taken and then not analysed?

    Thanks,

    Becky
