Armpit lump

Hello

I accidentally discovered a lump in my armpit around 5 days ago. I say accidentally because it doesn’t hurt or anything.  It’s about a centimetre in diameter and completely painless. It’s not red or sore to look at and it doesn’t move around under my skin but moves with the skin if that makes sense.

I made an appointment with my GP on Tuesday. She asked me to change in the other room so she could check my breasts aswell. When she came in, she looked at the lump and asked me what I thought. I told her I initially wondered if it was a cyst or boil but the lack of pain or head or redness had made me call the surgery.

She he looked at it and said she didn’t know what it was but said it was probably a cyst that would go away on it’s own. Then she said she wouldn’t bother doing a breast exam and to come back if it got any bigger. I felt abit stupid at that point.

Im really unhappy as she didn’t really look at it, it’s still there and is still not painful or red or have any of the hallmarks of a boil? My grandma on my mums side dies of cancer and my paternal aunt is just getting over bowel cancer. I just don’t feel like I was examined and I’m unsure what to do. I’m 38.

  • Hello Mabelrose2017.  Can you not get an appointment with another doctor at the surgery?  I doubt whether this is uncommon and nobody should take offence.  Don't just sit and worry - the sooner you have it properly checked the easier you will feel.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Hi Mabelrose2017.

    I am not a doctor.

I know from personal experience that not all cysts or boils have the classic red painful angry appearance. Some are just silent lumps that clear up by themselves. Some just take a long time to come to a head - which at least means you know what it is.

I would give it two weeks to see how it looks then.

  • Mabelrose,

I too attended my docs on Tuesday for the same thing. My doc fully examined me and found another lump! She asked me about whether cancer was in the family, as we've got bowel, ovarian, breast and osephegus. She has referred me to the local breast clinic which I'm attending next week!

i would seek a second opinion as you should have been examined!!

dont be afraid of speaking out and questioning their actions.

    Good Luck xx
