Cervix abnormalities, Urgent referral

Hi,

Im in a terrible state after being given an urgent referral to a gynaecologist. Last week during a routine smear test, the nurse said she could see an abnormality above my cervix. She stated it looked like a reddish/purplish blood blister. She immediately telephoned the surgery’s GP who specialises in ‘women’s health’ & she agreed to free up an apt for today.

Follwing examination the GP said she could certainly see what the nurse had described & that it bled easily upon examination. The GP examined me further & said she could feel abnormalities across the whole surface of my cervix. The leaflet I was given about my 2 week urgent referral states it is because my symptoms or examination could indicate cancer.

She asked me if there was any family history of cervical or breast cancer, which there isn’t. I had an abnormal smear, CIN 3, apx 20yrs ago, but following treatment for this, my smears have always been normal.

Im terrified, I have two little boys & my mind is running away with me. Does anyone have any experience of these symptoms or any advice? Thankyou to you all xx

  • Hi all

so I had my appt today and was nervous to say the least. The nurses were brilliant and really put me at ease. The nurse who I saw was the nurse who did my lletz in 2012! I remembered her and she remembered me.

So she checked my cervix on close examination and was really happy with what she saw! Completely different reaction to my GP who said I had a very abnormal looking cervix!

The nurse said that i have a cyst on my cervix which is just like a spot you would get on your face etc and it should eventually pop or disappear. She was confident there is nothing else going on and didn’t need to take any samples or swabs!

i am so happy and relieved. The last weeek and a half has been a daunting time. I am glad it’s been checked though and can now concentrate on my hernia operation on the 23rd then back to the Gp to find out what is causing my pains!

    Love and hugs x x x x

  • Hi tunefultan

i had severe dyskariosis in 2012 and had an apt to go to gynae. They did the lletz there and then and took a sample and had it tested

I got my results back which confirmed the abnormalities and was also checked for the hpv virus which came back negative. I had to go back after 6 months for a repeat smear which was normal then back to the 3 yr cycle which have been normal since.

hooe it all goes ok for you. Smears are such a crucial screening to have because it picks up the pre cancerous cells in good time and saves lives. I always think back now to if I never had my lletz done in 2012 and them cells grew where would i be at now!

think of it as positive and that it’s picked these abnormalities and they will get rid of them :)

  • Miss Lincoln.... thank you....

just got home from my appointment at the colposcopy clinic!

he was very reassuring but took a biopsy saying we’ll address whatever we need too when the results are in....  I tested positive for HPV when I had mild dyskariosis 15 months ago so I’m suspecting that to still be there....

have an MRI on Thursday (typically the morning of my sons 18th birthday)! To look at my spine, hips and sacrioid as I’m having a lot of trouble with bone pain I’m hoping for just wear and tear.....

anyone reading this worrying about biopsy procedures - don’t, bit of a sharp scratch having the local - then just uncomfortable to be in the chair!

Now just a wait...!  And many crossed fingers!

  • Hi Miss Lincoln & Tunefultun,

Miss Lincoln, I am so delighted that you had positive news today. Isn’t it unbelievable the difference in reactions from different health care providers? I hope you have a restful nights sleep & can now concentrate on your hernia surgery. All my love & very best wishes to you.

Tunefultun, nice to hear from a fellow Twinny mum .

I hope you too have a good nights sleep following your apt today, it’s so difficult to switch off. Was your MRI something that was booked prior to your abnormal smear result? I have an abdominal scan scheduled for Sunday & im awaiting an apt for colposcopy, which they’ve said will be this week or next.

I wish you all the very best,

    K xx

  • Relieved for you Miss Lincoln ........and relax

Twinmum08 (is that because your twins were 2008)? If so mine too! (Boy/girl)

ok so biopsy last Tuesday and letter received Friday (3 days wow)! Confirming CIN3 amd stating they will offer LLETZ .....   I’d still rather they took the whole lot away! But he said he wouldn’t do that!

  • Sorry I didn’t answer your ?....!

my first abnormal smear was 18 months ago . I’ve been having terrible back and pelvic pain for years! So my mri isn’t connected to the cervical stuff - referral was made by physio not gp... so I’m hoping none of it is connected!

  • Hi, Hope you are doing ok? Yes, my beautiful boys were born in 2008, they are my world. I hope you get your LLETZ treatment soon and that you can move forward physically & emotionally soon. My emotions have been all over the shop. I know what you’re saying about ‘taking the whole lot away’, my sentiments exactly! I’ve suffered from abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, pelvic pain & back pain for such a long time now. I’ve always wondered whether it’s gynae or bowels? :-/ I hope you’ll keep us posted & that all goes well for you. Take it easy, K xx
  • Thank you lovely lady xxx I will indeed keep posting here xxx. I’m really hoping for general wear and tear from the MRI but although I’ve had a bad back for what seems like forever I’ve been in really rather bad pain for about 18 months with it and my hips/pelvis - I’ve also piled on weight and have a horrid wheeze and constantly tight chest (not been to drs about that as pretty sure that’s the fact I’ve put on 3 stone in 12 months having gone from really active to pretty immobile and eating seems one of the only joys left when the children are in school..! I think there’s a little paranoia too that everything is going to be connected and I’m lighting up like a Christmas tree! Take care and thanks for your support - this is a fabulous place xxxx Tan x
  • Hi, How are things progressing with you? Have you had your LLETZ & MRI? I had a colposcopy today & the abnormality seen on my cervix is a ‘non suspicious ‘ blood spot, possibly due to endometriosis? The consultant discussed the findings of my pelvic scan, which showed a cyst on my ovary with an area which is solid. She sent me for a blood test to check my ca125 levels & said if it comes back elevated, she will arrange a CT. She’s arranged a repeat pelvic scan in 6 weeks & a follow up apt. I do hope all is going well for you.
  • Hi twinmum08 Still waiting for appointment for the LLETZ procedure and waiting on the results of the MRI xxx. In fact I’ve just sent in an online request for results.... he did say up to 4 weeks (12/4) so may not be in yet xx Thank you for thinking of me xx. Sorry your still having issues - fingers crossed the 125 results come back normal - keep us posted lovely xxx Tanya x
