enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hi everyone,

So I went to the doctors, my lymph nodes havent seemed to get any larger and I think they could have got a tiny bit smaller but my mind could just playing tricks. The doctor was very reassuring, especially at the fact I have swollen lymph nodes under the jaw on both sides (apparently its more concerning if its only on 1)

I havent had any other persistent symptoms which is encouraging and the doctor believed that the swollen lymph nodes could be due to irritated gums as a result of my wisdom teeth coming through. She couldnt find any other swollen lymph nodes throughout my body aswell. However, she did take my blood and everything was fine apart from my red blood cells which were slightly under the average range. I searched “lower red blood cells” obviously and it fired me with results of lymphoma and leukaemia. From being reassured after the tests im still concerned after the google search. She told me to come back in 6 weeks to check my blood again. Please can someone reassure me cause my anxiety is through the roof again! Cheers.

    Hi Adam,

Welcome to the forum.I am sorry to hear about the worries you are having with your swollen lymph nodes.

I am sure that your doctor wouldn't have left you for 6 weeks if she was at all suspicious.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Good morning,

I found a lump in the left side of my groin in the first week of April. After researching swollen glands etc i left it 3 weeks before making an appointment with my GP. She sent me for an ultasound scan which showed i have enlarged lymph nodes. I have since found 3 in my left side 2 in my right side and 1 just above my collarbone.

I returned to my GP and she requested a chest x-ray, blood tests and a 2nd ultrasound scan. My chest x-ray was clear, my blood work is all fine and i go for my 2nd scan on June 13th.

Ive had the odd night sweat and night shivers along with persistent itching over my body not confined to 1 area and the constant feeling of being absolutely drained.

i can not remember the last time i suffered from the common cold or any infection.

All of the above is leaving me puzzled and worried as to why nothing is showing up and tests are coming back clear.

Any advice will be greatly recieved as i am nearly 8 weeks down the line with now explanation as to what it could be.

Apologies if im posting on completely the wrong forum or website but this is where the ever so helpful and sometimes panic stricken google sent me.

Apologies for the grammar and thanks in advance.

    Ash

  • Hi everyone

I had my ent appointment today and an ultrasound scan and I am so pleased to say that the doctors said my lump is a normal salivary gland , I also have other harmless lymph nodes in my neck , he said I can feel them more because I am skinny , I have spent two years worrying about this , I wish I had went to the doctors sooner and as for my jaw he has referred me urgent to facial specialist.

    hope everyone’s doing well xx

  •

    Hi Marie,

I'm so glad that it was all good news for you today. I hope that you get your referral to see a facial specialist soon and, that they can put your mind to rest too.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your support jolamine I appreciate it all that is playing on my mind now is that the doctor has put my referral through as urgent x

  •

    Hi Marie,

Try not to let yourself worry too much about the 'urgent' referral. Nearly all the referrals related to the possibility of cancer are rated as urgent. It doesn't usually refer to the individual patient's needs.

I hope that all turns out well for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks jolamine I’m going to try and stop worrying , I’ve had the problem with my jaw for 6 years not so if it was something sinister I should think it would’ve shown by now x

  •

    Hi Marie,

Whatever turns out to be the problem with your jaw, I hope that they can do something to help you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
