enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • [@becky1984]‍ You’re right, I am definitely going to go and hopefully get some reassurance. Hope you are well! Xx

[@charrrhx]‍ I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. It must be scary to find out that there is more to your situation than what you first anticipated. I can’t imagine how you must be feeling. At least the ball is rolling and although 2 weeks will feel like an eternity, you’ll get your answers soon. I have no idea about prognosis but wanted to let you know I’m thinking of you and I hope you are okay. Take care and keep us informed! Best wishes. Xx

  • Thanks Katie!

i hope you can feel more reassured after your appointment next week! I will definitely let you know how my ultrasound goes next week I’m sure I will be having a biopsy not sure how fast they will do it but as scared as I am I need to know what’s in my lymph nodes and hope if it is something sinister that is very slow growing and treatable!

    Best wishes to you!

  • Hi Charrrhx

I’m so sorry about your situation I can only imagine how scared you are, I hope when you get your results back that your lymph nodes are clear! I have no idea about prognosis once cancer has spread to lymph nodes I think it depends on the type of cancer, I won’t say try not to worry yet as I know that’s impossible! ( I have had this worry for 14months!)It is possible though your lymph nodes are clear so try hold onto to that at the moment.

I wish you all the best

    take care of yourself!

  • Ugh where do I start, I am 17 and about 2/3 weeks ago I had a chest infection and ever since then I’ve had a cough and a sore throat , I have a habit of looking on the internet if I am worried about my health which I’m sure most people do, but about a week ago I noticed one of my glands under my jaw is swollen and is not tender and I sometimes get an earache , what’s funny is I wasn’t showing any of these symptoms until I started googling, yes I have saw 2 doctors since then and they both had a look at my throat and said it’s healthy but I am a very bad hypocondriac and I still don’t think it’s just an “infection” i only have to show a symptom of cancer and start worrying myself to death to the point where I don’t eat, my throat looks bumpy at the back and there are a few white patches , to me it doesn’t look healthy that’s why I am still worried, is anyone else going through the same situation as me?

  • Hi all,

Im almost 21 at University and like most of us have panicked and searched our symptoms online. Roughly a month ago I noticed swollen lumps where my chin meets my neck. 1 on the left and 2/3 on the right. These I presume are swollen lymph nodes and I can move these about very well. They dont feel painful at all and are not that soft. I noticed these around the same time as I had problems with my wisdom teeth and my dentist said that the teeth seemed infected on both sides so part of me hopes that the lymph nodes have reacted to that. However after seeing this forum it seems that the nodes would be painful in that scenario so i started panicking again.

The pain from the wisdom teeth is gone but the lymph nodes are still here, but I dont think they are any bigger. I now have abit of a sore throat and occasional cough. Also my nose is abit blocked and have been sneezing more often. Also my mouth and lips have been really dry. So I added these symptoms to Dr google and it just gets worse.

I get so worked up and my anxiety goes through the roof and ive been constantly feeling the lymph nodes which just makes it worse. Going to the doctor next week so hopefully everythings ok, just wanted to post on this to calm the anxiety abit. Cheers.

    Hi Adam,

I am so glad to hear that you are going to see the doctor next week. I hope that this is just a reaction to your teeth problems. It may take a while for your lymph nodes to settle.

Try not to consult 'Dr Google'. This won't do you any good, but can make things more scary. Much of the articles here are out of date, poorly researched or aimed to be spectacular.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hello again everyone,

I posted a couple of days ago because I was so worried about my unexpected findings of what looked like abnormal lymph nodes/lymph tissue whilst having half of my thyroid removed which was deemed as u4 in ultrasound and thy3f biopsy results.

Well, my follow up was due for the 20th, however my surgeon rang me today unexpectedly and delivered the most amazing news, the lump turned out to be a benign follicular adenoma and the unexpected extra tissue was extra thyroid tissue which was growing away from the thyroid. I was so shocked and so was my surgeon and she was positive it was going to be a different outcome.

i feel so lucky and hope that my experience can give others hope in the future, whoever may stumble across this post, I have scrolled many of pages on these scary nights waiting for answers and worrying about what will be next. Please always keep hope, it’s not over until the fat lady sings.

Thank you everyone for the support over the last 2 months.

i wish everybody the best. Xxx
