enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hi everyone

So glad I came across this forum after my endless searches on Google bringing me to the first possible diagnosis for myself lol.

I found a lump in my mouth just before Christmas but with Christmas and moving house I never took much notice of it. Then I went to dentist and he said it was a bone growth. After this I started to check myself for lumps and found one on the right side of my neck on the muscle. Went to doctor and he said felt like a swollen lymph node to come back in four weeks. Roll on four weeks it's still there and I can not stop poking at it.

I have always suffered from jaw problems because of tmj pain and now I'm paranoid thinking I have jaw cancer.

Seen doctor again and she felt round my neck etc and couldn't feel any more lumps so decided to send me for a ultra sound scan on it for my own peace of mind but she doesn't think it's anything sinister as it is moveable and feels smooth. This was on Monday from then I have developed a very sore throat and on a ten day course of antibiotics, which has me paranoid i have oral cancer, i am a smoker and I do have a white spot on my tonsil and very red back of throat. Also a couple of lumps on my top jaw and bottom jaw but all moveable.

I have diagnosed myself with every possible cancer there is because of Google lol.

I am 28 and have two young boys and don't think I have cancer but don't we always think the worst?? I have had two friends who have had cancer one sadly passed away at 35 and his wife got the all clear after having surgery and chemo.

Wish I could bar myself from Google. Xxx

  • Hi Danielleb. Welcome to the forum.

I must start out by saying that I'm not a doctor.

From what you say, it doesn't sound like your GP is particularly worried, and most of your stress is being caused by Google.  I think most of us here agree that Google isn't very helpful and frequently feeds our fears. Now is the season for sore throats - you only have to hear how Theresa May is croaking, and no doubt she gets the best medical attention. You have done all the right things and your dentist and doctor are on the case, but so far there's no reason to get worried.  Please try and keep calm.

You do mention one risk factor: smoking.  At 28 you do have time to kick the habit in time for most of the negative health effects to reverse themselves (around 20 years).  If you can't give up completely then vaping is almost certainly a lot safer than smoking. Worth considering perhaps?

  • Hi everyone, me again!

DanielleB I made the mistake of googling too and found myself in despair quite quickly... I've steered well clear of it since. Sorry I can't offer any advice  I'm new here myself!

I am due to get the results of my Thyroid blood test this afternoon. I also received a letter this morning to go and have an ultrasound scan of my supraclavicular nodes on the 25th  I'm glad it isn't long to wait but it feels like a long time! Can anyone who has had this advise what to expect? Will I get results there and then? I've been taking amoxicillin and I think my swelling has gone down or at least feels a little softer, but it could be wishful thinking! I assume the Dr isn't too concerned as no biopsy or anything is mentioned  just US scan. Is this likely to be the case? Sorry for all the questions!

    Thank you as always :)

  • Hi Littleoldme.

The supraclivicular nodes are just below the level of the Adam's apple at the front of the neck/throat. I've not had that particular scan, but it will be the usual messy gel and a painless running of the probe over the area. It should be over quite quickly.

Whether you get told the results there and then seems to depend on lots of different factors, but if the images need to be examined by a separate clinician then there will be a delay. I guess it all depends on who performs the test, and how qualified they are to interpret the results.

  • Thank you Tele, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions :)

    Hi Danielle,

Please try your best to steer clear of Google. Many of the sites are out of date, poorly researched and sensationalist. These will only scare you rigid. Constantly poking your jaw can make it sorer, so try not to keep touching it.

Look at the good news - your GP cannot find any additional lumps in your neck and all the lumps you have are moveable. I am sorry to hear about your two young friends with cancer. Can you look at this as a warning and, try to stop smoking for the sake of your sons?

I hope that you find nothing untoward. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Littleoldme,

I just want to wish you all the best for your appointment this afternoon. I am glad to hear that you now have a date for your ultrasound. Once again Telemando, had described this well for you. It is totally painless to have. They will apply some gel to your throat and then glide over this with a probe. Any abnormalities will show up on a monitor. Unless your scan is carried out by a senior radiologist, you may have to wait a week or two for the results.

I am glad to hear that your swelling seems to have abated with the antibiotics. As to whether or not there will be the need of any further tests, this will depend upon the findings of your ultrasound scan. I hope that nothing untoward is found.

Don't forget to tell us how you get on. We are always here for you.
    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks for your well wishes Jolamine. My blood tests returned saying my Thyroid function is normal so that is good news for now. Just a waiting game for the scan next week :)

  •

    HI Littleoldme,

I am delighted to hear that your bloods showed normal thyroid function - that has to be good news!

Keeping my fingers crossed for 25th

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Well I have just been for my Scan on my neck. He asked to see the swelling and scanned on it and around it (though not the whole neck) he said he didn't see anything at all that caused concern so he would write that in his report to my GP  He said if it didn't go away longer term or if there was any other cause for concern the GP could refer back for a CT.

I'm incredibly relieved! I'd be a little happier if that was just the end of it, I don't like the nagging seed of doubt that it could become sinister, but for now, he was completely unconcerned.

I hope everyone else is doing well x
