Waiting for MRI Results

Hi,

I had an MRI scan almost 8 weeks ago & I still haven't had the results. I have chased this up with the Consultant & have been advised that there is a shortage of RadioNeurologists available to analyse & report on my results. I don't want to keep pestering the Consultant but I am growing increasingly worried as my symptoms are persisting & I have no indication when I might receive the results. This seems like a very long time to wait, but as I've not had a scan before perhaps this is usual? It would just be reassuring to know all's well as if there is something wrong, this is allowing it to get worse during this waiting period. I am starting to wonder whether there is a way to get the scan released to me & whether there's an option to pay to have the results reported on privately? I feel very lost in the system & don't know how to progress this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Hi there ruby ... bless ya, 8 weeks does seem such a long wait , no wonder your climbing the walls ... maybe try your own G P .... they may be able to chase them up, from their angle ....

I just heard about tests l had about 4 weeks ago .. but you keep pushing till you here ... it's your life and your body so tell them how it's all effecting you ... good luck ... fingers crossed Chrissie x

  •  I suppose the main factor causing the long, long wait is a lack of doctors etc.

Here in Aberdeen I normally wait 7-10 days

  • Every hospital should have a Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).  Contact them and say you want help to break this log jam and you're considering a complaint.

If the PALS can't help then I would write directly to the hospital's chief executive, with a copy to your MP.  If this still doesn't get any results, then write to the commissioner of services for the hospital, with a further copy to your MP.

Part of the reason continued poor service in any organisation is that not enough people complain.  As patients we all tend to think this is a free service and we should be grateful for what we get.  That's true to a certain extent, but if no one ever complains. nothing ever improves. Remember that every complaint when targeted at the right person (the higher the better) strengthens the hands of those within the organisation who want to make improvements, and embarrasses those who are complacent.  This is no vacancy in any organisation that can't be filled if the opportunity and rewards are right!

  • I too had a mri scan 4 weeks ago as I have abnormal liver function but have not yet had my results and too nervous to chase up results very anxious time at the moment  so I understand how you feel

  • Have you got results yet? I'm three weeks deep on a brain scan and nothing.

  • Hi , I understand how your feeling , call gp and they can go onto your notes on the scan and if they can tbey will put your mind at rest xx
