Lower left abdominal/side/back pain

Starting in January I’ve had this pain in my lower left side that radiates around my back and down my front pelvic area. I’ve had a transvaginal ultrasound showed nothing, blood and urine are clear, I have irregular very heavy with a lot of clotting menstruation. A few weeks ago I had laparoscopy looking for endometriosis nothing. My dr noted I have a very deep pelvis which is odd I’m only 5’1. I’ve had an endometrial biopsy come back clear. This pain was so intense in January I was unable to walk I missed over a months worth of work. When I massage my back where it hurts there is a hard “mass” I have no idea what it could be. The pain feels as if I’m walking around with a 10 ft sword protruding from my body and hitting it on everything. My obgyn is setting me under with a gastroenterologist we want to exhaust all other possibilities before removing my uterus and tubes hoping that will store the pain. I do have constipation recently started having mucous pass with my bowel movements when I’m able to pass them. Also, I started having pretty intense rectal pain during bowel movements even though they are seemingly soft.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • i have it and it is so painfull. i dont know what to do. i cant take the pain anymore. i can move or anything.

  • I have exactly the same that started after 15 years on being on the coil and during replacement. I had to go to a new surgery who hurt me putting in the new one. I went private as they thought I had polyps and had coil fitted. I ended up in A&E 3 times bloods done CT showed no kidney stones. Internal scan done and all negative. Antibiotics helped with pain killers. Removed coil and all good but periods so heavy had endometrial ablation in March, now pain has come back left abdomen round back and down leg. Is it period pain triggering sciatica?

  • I have pretty much same symptoms and I'm a man, so dont think it anything to do with down that way, I wake up every morning in pain in the middle of my ribcage and just below, also my left side feels like someone is constantly gripping my side, I've had this for 3 years now, and being back and fourth to docs getting bloods for celiacs, kidney and liver function, and loads of other stuff like full blood count, and inflammation markers, my inflammation markers are a bit high still as in middle of going threw all this i found a lump on my thyroid which turned out to be cancer so had half my thyroid removed and now i got to wait 6 month to have the other half looked at and a couple lymph nodes that my surgeon found up right side of my neck all checked, so haven't even being given all clear with this, but i just want to find out what is wrong with my side now as I'm all healed for now on my neck, and if I have to get more operations done, I dont want to have any other underline health issues incase causes any issues, do you get an indigestion heartburn type feeling in the middle of your stomach at bottom of ribcage, my doctor has said a few times now it is back pain I'm getting and it comes across my left side, which I totally disagree as I feel it could be my bowels in some way as sometimes my stools can be black, then one week I could be hard and constipated and then another week it goes soft and more normal but I definitely just feel this could be something to do with my bowels, has anyone found out what was wrong with them or anyone had anything similar with the sore side and stomach, as I'm scared about all this as I've had cancer so I'm a bit scared,

  • I’ve also been experiencing this same pain (lower left abdo, lower left back and left hip) since February. I have IBS too but seem to be having more gas and bloating than usual. Pain also seems worse during, period. I stopped my pill in November too and wonder if its related. My mum suffered from a nervous breakdown at christmas so i’ve been so focused on her that i’ve sort of neglected myself. Will definitely be going to see my GP though as the pain is most annoying and some days worse than others. I’m 30 with 2 kids and a very demanding job so this is starting to wear me down a bit :(

Is anyone any further ahead with a diagnosis yet?

  • This sounds so much like me. I’m 31, IBS, highly stressful job but no kids is the only difference but I can’t see that impacting too much. Pain is in exactly the same places. I stopped my pill 3 weeks ago and I feel my symptom have increased.

I’m no further along yet, things seem to take forever. I have another doctors app on 13th May, an oc health app on 17th June, a urologist ap on the 20th June and I’m currently on the waiting list for a gastro app which honestly feels like it’s taking months to get!

Had another set of stool samples send off but they’ve come back just with the usual IBS. Last set of blood tests came back with normal liver function now which is good but still came back which high inflammation markers which is what happens every time I have bloods! The last time I had bloods it took 3 different attempts over 3 days to withdraw any due to scar tissue from having so many blood tests in such a short period of time (3 months).

Will update when I know anymore!

  • Sounds so similar. I get quite health anxious at times probably because i see lots in my job, so i keep avoiding GP. Really need to bite the bullet and just go though!

Do you have pain in your abdo when u press on certain area? I do, and sometimes i also feel a sausage like tube from left hip towards pubic bone (i’m guessing probably intestines during spells of constipation) Its all so strange as sometimes it feels like mechanical back pain like maybe herniated disc etc. but then other times i have gas and rumbling and it all feels more bowel related. Are you on any pain meds at the minute, if so, do they help?

  • I thought and still think it’s all bowel related too and so does the doctor and one specialist. The last two samples have come back normal though and just show IBS. My doctor thought I may have had chrones or ulcerstive colitis but it doesn’t seem likely now due to the sample results. She’s mentioned micro colitis but I’m not going to know anything until this gastro appointment which seems to be taking forever even though it’s on the emergency/ urgent waiting list.

It does come on in waves though and is worse at times. When it’s mild it does feel like I’ve got a bad lower back but I really don’t think it can be that with all the other symptoms. It’s always there, every day but other days it’s incredibly painful, it feels like chronic trapped wind and like someone has punched me in the stomach but it is alas I equally painful around the side and in my lower back on the left. It’s almost like someone has shot an arrow through the lower left hand side of my back and it’s poking out of my front if you know what I mean.

Someotmes it comes on when I wee. I can have nights when I’m up 4/5 times with a full bladder each time even though I haven’t had a drink. When I’ve emptied my bladder I lay in bed in pain for half hour or so before I eventually drop back off. That pain is never in my front though, that’s always in the lower left back and side.

Ive has every test imaginable apart from an MRI. I’m at such a loss and it gets me down quite a bit! I’m a primary school teacher so my job is distracting which is good however, sometimes it comes on in lessons and I don’t know what to do with myself.

The only pain relief I have is co-codamol and co-drydamol but I rarely take them as I’ve found that they make me constipated which is not good at all as sometimes they make me feel anxious.

  • Yeah me too, i’ve always had bowel troubles, alternating constipation and dihorrea but more recently since this pain has started. Yeah totally feel the same, like chronic trapped wind around that area, constant rumbling and bubbling. I so get your description of the arrown, thats exactly how i feel :( I’ve also been experiencing, on occasions, this awful tailbone pain that causes discomfort when going from sitting to standing position.

I work as an ambulance technician so lots of stress and also lots of heavy lifting, hence why i’v also thought mechanical back pain such as disc herniation.

Need to get myself to doctors and hopefully get some answers. I’ve been living on cocodomol recently as its the only thing that eases it slightly but yeah doesnt help with constipation. Vicious circle. :(

  • Hi

Still in pain. Have had colonoscopy and samples all clear. Had transvaginal but unclear. Could not even find overies!! Now waiting to see gynocologist. Have done some research and sounds like pelvic congestion syndrome. However a lot of gynos dont acknowleadge this. Will have to wait and see. Fed up with it now. argh
