Lower left abdominal/side/back pain

Starting in January I’ve had this pain in my lower left side that radiates around my back and down my front pelvic area. I’ve had a transvaginal ultrasound showed nothing, blood and urine are clear, I have irregular very heavy with a lot of clotting menstruation. A few weeks ago I had laparoscopy looking for endometriosis nothing. My dr noted I have a very deep pelvis which is odd I’m only 5’1. I’ve had an endometrial biopsy come back clear. This pain was so intense in January I was unable to walk I missed over a months worth of work. When I massage my back where it hurts there is a hard “mass” I have no idea what it could be. The pain feels as if I’m walking around with a 10 ft sword protruding from my body and hitting it on everything. My obgyn is setting me under with a gastroenterologist we want to exhaust all other possibilities before removing my uterus and tubes hoping that will store the pain. I do have constipation recently started having mucous pass with my bowel movements when I’m able to pass them. Also, I started having pretty intense rectal pain during bowel movements even though they are seemingly soft.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hello Highlands xx

i had high grade dyskariosis and ended up having LLETZ - but this wasn’t the cause of my pain.     But I did get an MRI which determined that I have 3 discs that have slipped.   I’ve been told this is likely the cause of all my symptoms, paired with IBS.    All my symptoms are worse during menstration and ovulation, but I guess that’s due to all ligaments becoming a bit loose during these times in preparation for avpotential pregnancy.

i get sciatica periodically, which is now obviously due to that particular disc!

I tend to grin and bare the pain now (I’m useless at making appointments with the dr).   It’s still constant to varying degrees.   They suggested next step as being steroid injections but I’ve heard they are hit and miss as to whether they will help or make it worse....   so I’m not keen on that option! And surgery’s a massive NO for me without a 100% garuntee !

the last few days I’ve been taking hemp cbd oil (15%) and I do believe it’s taking the edge off.....    I will try anything!   Amitriptyline didn’t help and I suspect I’ve become immune to normal doses of codeine and tramadol having taken so much!

if you haven’t had one ask for a lower lumber MRI x

good luck it seems to be a long journey xxx

  • Hi all, so pleased to have found this forum, I to have been suffering from pain in lower left hand side, which travels through to my buttock and sometimes down front of left leg. I have had scans and all come back clear, the latest is that my doctor said I have arthritis in my lower spine and this is causing the pain(I find this hard to believe as why does it get worse when period is due) any advice? Am thinking of getting a second opinion from another doctor, but unsure how I would do this as hard enough to get an appointment with my own doctor.

  • I’ve been experiencing the same thing, I’ve had these pains since August last year they’ve gotten worse over these past months blood test and urine tests came back clear both ultrasounds came back clear they seem the think that it’s growing pains but these pains are nothing like growing pains

  • I have the exact same symptoms! Mine originally started about 9 months ago when my period disappeared for 3 months.. I'm 31! I have also been offered a laporscopy.. to be honest I'm scared of having it done and put it off, but I feel I'm going to have to go as I cant cope with this pain all the time.  Did you ever get ypur kidneys checked. I thought might could be kidney pain but they never checked, as for a I'm aware. I hope your laporscopy has gone well and you have got some answers.

  • This sounds exactly like Sciatica - I have 3 dodgy discs and 1 happens to be the one that effects the sciatic nerve - deft worse during menstration (prob due to softer ligaments during that time) I can be completely bedbound when the disc moves and pinches it - the thing that helps me most is very slow and gentle yoga for lower back pain - stretching out the psoriasis is crucial in pain management xxx

    hope that helps xxx

  • I feel your pain. I’ve literally been having symptoms and tests since 2 weeks before Christmas.

My pain is all in my left side and hip and radiates up my back and into my pelvis. It started with me thinking I had a water infection, it turned out I did and I had 3 in a row with anti biotics for all - these samples were sent to the lab and came back as inconclusive though which I don’t understand. I was referred to a urologist and I paid privately as I was in so much pain and wanted it all sorted as quickly as I could. I paid £980 and was told I had kidney stones and needed an operation - forked our for a CT scan which came back showing I did not have kidney stones, as you can imagine I was truelty deflated.

I went back to the doctors. I had internal exams of both front and back, my Urine and bloods were coming back fine and then one blood set came back with abnormal liver function. I had an ultrasound following this which just showed a fatty liver but nothing else (I am a healthy weight and exercise). The ultrasound also checked my gyni area and my kidneys again. Nothing else was found.

My dr wrote to a liver specialist who suggest the liver abnormality was perhaps showing due to inflammation in another organ. I saw an NHS urologist who was adamant I have a bowel problem and suggested diverticulitis/ chrones/ ulcerative collitis. Following this my Dr sent a stool sample off and explained it this came back positive that she would put me through for a colon CT. It came back negative with only IBS... extremely deflated again here!

She doesn’t know what else to do. I’m having more blood tests tomorrow to see if my markers are up or I have any signs of infection. I did explain that when I was 21 and had my appendix out that I had a perforated gallbladder but she said that the pain I have is nowhere near my gallbladder and that my blood are showing no signs of gallbladder issues.

I feel like giving up. I’m in so much pain all the time. It radiates and stabs and aches. Some days can be worse than others. I’ve had blood in my poo, I feel a sharp pain when I wee at times, I feel swollen and sore and tender. I’m on my period now also and it feels a million times worse which has never happened before.

If my bloods come back clear I don’t know what the next step will be. I’m currently on an NHS waiting list to see a gastro specialist as I just can’t afford to pay for it again.

    Help?

  • Hi Hollie - I'd seriously be asking for an MRI - all your symptoms would be explained from a disc/nerve issue.    Problematic discs don't necessarily cause huge amounts of pain in the back but can cause a whole range of pain and problems depending on what disc is out and which nerves it's effecting.   (obviouly IBS is something different but may just be coincidental and not related to your other symptoms)

On a different note i also have non alcohol related fatty live (self inflicted from my diet i suspect) and my pain from that is always the right side.   my other pains are mainly caused by my back.  I hope you find an answer - unfortunately if it is your discs there are limited treatment options that can garuntee a fix but there are certain basics that you can do yourself that can really help x

Good luck - keep us posted x

  • hi My daughter came on her period at 8yrs old...she had regular 7 day periods but very heavy and painful gave paracetamol and the odd days off school till she was ok again!!! Suddenly on December 15th she started with pain in back and pelvis she was treated for UTIs. My friend mentioned to me endometriosis but my GP dismissed it saying she was to young....was later referred to urology to rule out anything to do with water works everything cane back clear so was then referred to Pediatrics who the referred to Gynaecologist before we could get the appointment through she took a turn for the worst and ended up in a+e after being told by my GP that she needed mophine in hospital she got admitted to the children’s assessment unit  where they ran tests (BUT GAVE PAIN RELIEF WHILE THEY WAS DOING THIS TRAMADOL) on appendix which came back clear, I had to go home for the night to sort my  other child out and dog etc I was woken, Chloe rang me saying the surgeons  wants to discharge me. I rushed straight back and was met by her nurse who said she was being discharged and I need to sign some paperwork I said can I have a private word  please so I said to her we came here as Chloe was in to much pain to stay at home what has changed??? She said well she hasn’t got Appendicitis so she doesn’t need to stay I said to her hypertheicly what you do if I said we wasn’t going anywhere and you would need to call the police to remove us against out will she said well she’s would have to stay to the morning till the surgeon can speak to you again I said great she staying then they moved her on to a children’s ward I settled her in and had to go home as I had my other daughter with me!! The following morning I went straight back to the hospital to find Chloe had been refused meds all night I was fuming she was doubled over in pain crying begging them for painkillers anything to take the pain away the surgeon came and spoke to me and said what is Chloe gaining form all this attention I was fuming so I said we was going for a walk to clear out heads... I had in my head that this was endometriosis when I walked on the ward I asked to see a gynaecologist but they refused  so I bundled Chloe into a wheelchair and went searching for the endometriosis specialist in the hospital I made a scene in the waiting room until they agreed to see us when he finished in surgery with another patient!!! We went back up to the children’s ward and waited all the time they are trying to get rid of us I said we are waiting for the specialist and he will come they  just laughed and sneered at us until the leading endometriosis specialist walked into our cubicle, he said you have got my attention let’s hear your story!!! Within 30 minutes he agreed with us and agreed to a laparoscopy and booked us in for 12th of April and sent down to pre op assessment then home with pain relief till the appointment!!!! Chloe has not been to school since the school opened back up after Xmas we have had numerous fines and social services trying to get her to go to school saying she is just emotional!!!! It has been a really tough battle but DONT GIVE UP YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD!!!!! Good luck with everything!!!!

  • Hi

I too have been experiencing excrutiating pain in left hand groin area and lower back for over two months now.  I have suffered from IBS for many years so know when having a flare up but this pain is far more concentrated and painful.  I have had a colonoscopy and transvaginal scan both clear.  I am at a loss to know what else it can be.  My family history with cancer is not good so obviously a little worried.

    Anyone ?
