Lower left abdominal/side/back pain

Starting in January I’ve had this pain in my lower left side that radiates around my back and down my front pelvic area. I’ve had a transvaginal ultrasound showed nothing, blood and urine are clear, I have irregular very heavy with a lot of clotting menstruation. A few weeks ago I had laparoscopy looking for endometriosis nothing. My dr noted I have a very deep pelvis which is odd I’m only 5’1. I’ve had an endometrial biopsy come back clear. This pain was so intense in January I was unable to walk I missed over a months worth of work. When I massage my back where it hurts there is a hard “mass” I have no idea what it could be. The pain feels as if I’m walking around with a 10 ft sword protruding from my body and hitting it on everything. My obgyn is setting me under with a gastroenterologist we want to exhaust all other possibilities before removing my uterus and tubes hoping that will store the pain. I do have constipation recently started having mucous pass with my bowel movements when I’m able to pass them. Also, I started having pretty intense rectal pain during bowel movements even though they are seemingly soft.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • My blood tests showed no problems with my kidney. They were only found after CT scan for abdominal pains.

The kind of pains you describe are similar to those from which I am still currently suffering. These, however, have been diagnosed as a double hernia but, in your case, they would have probably been seen on an xray or CT scan provided they looked in the right place. Check with your GP  whether hernia is a possibility and Good Luck!

  • Hi Claire_g

have you been tested for endometriosis???

  • Hi Sankerit,

What were your main symptoms if you don't mind me asking?

I have right side pain lower back which radiates around the side and lower abdomen/groin. I sometimes have pain in my lower abdomen when I wee. I've had blood tests which came back fine. I have an ultrasound and  transviginal scan booked in for next Thursday.

    Thanks x

  • I have the same and am waiting for an ultrasound. Did you get anywhere with your checks?

  • I’m so pleased I’ve found this thread ! I have had these exact same symptoms for around 3 years now. I’ve come in search for information as I just can’t cope with the pain anymore it’s having a decremental effect on everyday life. I’m 30 and I have 3 children but physically, i feel like an elderly lady (I’m bent over double half the time). The pain is not persistent and I’ve actaully (until recently) not had a ‘flare up’ for a good few months. This ‘flare up’ however has now gone on for around 4 weeks and does not seem to be getting better, only worse. The pain is in my lower back but radiates into my lower abdomen, at times it can literally be encruciating! Over the years I have gone into a&e numerous times and even ended up on morphine. I have had a laprosoptony with the suspition it could be endometriosis but was given the all clear for that and was given a diagnosis for IBS, I have also been admitted to hospital with them thinking I had appendicitis. Anyway, ever since my symptoms have only got worse! I also (not that often) get abnormal bleeding in between periods and the odd occasion where I have pain with intercourse. And like claire_g states my pain also peaks (flares up) when due or on period. I’m going back to the doctors this week. I will keep an eye on the thread and I hope you also get answers soon xxx

  • Hi Kimberley, ive just read your post and im having the same symtoms as yourself. I have a hospital app this Thursday. I think its a transvaginal ultrasound im getting. Did you ever get a medical outcome for your symptoms.

    Many thanks

  • Hi in response to tunefulton have you had any updates as I have exactly same symptoms for over a year and I have had no children so don't get a hisdiiretemy Waiting ct scan results but they think it is hernia. I don't as it was caused by food poisitioning and as they have left it the bacteria grows in your body starting with your bowels and then your kidneys a d now lower rib cage and back with extreme tenderness.

  • Hi Sanskrit, I just wanted to ask about where your pain was..was it just around your left hip ares like above and in the front at left side and going round towards your back as well?

I have severe pain right now in this area this has been coming and going for weeks now.. sometimes it's just a bit sore and other times it's worse.

I am going for a laparoscopy on the 21st..also to look for endometriosis as the internal ultrasound etc was fine.

I also have had mucus in my stools starting last month and was also very painful in my stomach when I was passing it.

I have a feeling everything will be fine in laparoscopy but defo know something isn't right..I said to my dad yesterday where I had pain and he mentioned kidneys but I thought they were higher up than that.

I'm also currently having a lot of wind moving out with this pain but it's not easing nor feels like trapped wind.

  • Hi Char

I have all the symptoms you mention re:right side.

I have had a CT scan, I believe they were checking for Kidney stones etc, I have had Ultrasound, and Transvaginal Ultrasound, Blood tests, Water tests, All came back Negative.

I have a Prolapsed Womb, so thought it was the cause since everything else drew a blank, But after seeing my Urogynie Doc yesterday, He is convinced the Prolapse is nothing to do with it, He said the pain area doesn't line up with Prolapse pains, I was so deflated, I hoped that i could have the Pessery ring fitted to lift the prolapse, and that would be it, no more pain, But now i am back to square 1 .

Incidently this has all happened after i had a urinary tract infection 2 weeks beforehand. I had 3 lots of anti bi's as it kept coming back for weeks. The urogynie doc was going to give me pills to take daily to stop an infection returning, but as it was a large pill , which i can't swallow ( i cant swallow pills unless they are tiny ), and it cant be crushed  and doesnt come in syrup form, i cant have it. just my luck.

I am also moving house i 2 weeks, and finding packing etc so hard, as the pain is worse if i bend just slightly, or lift stuff or stretch.

I hope i get answers soon, it's so hard to live with this pain on a daily basis ( 2 months now )

I hope you also find answers. x

  • Looking for some help ladies, I am having the same symptoms on my right side, this has been ongoing for over a year. I have been getting pain from my right groin up and over hip and across the bottom of my back. Main pain is my right groin, been for an X-ray of my kidneys as I had blood in my urine several times and docs thought I had kidney stones...none there. Pain continued so referred to gynocologist who without examine me says I think it is endometriosis so go on contraception which I did over a month ago. Bloods came back that I had low blood count needed iron tablets and ca125 came back high. Sent for 2 scans abdominal/transvaginal and the nurse scanning me said my ovaries look fine and decided I didn’t need the transvaginal which my doc was not happy about. I am waiting to return with a cancellation app, my lymph nodes in my armpits are swelling every couple of days and I am in pain everyday. I have had several abnormal smears the past few years, colposcopy was fine low grade....I feel like I’m falling to pieces and constantly tired, I’m now on gabapentin, iron tablets and the contraceptive pill. Any advice would be appreciated
