Pain in ovaries, knee and shoulder? Endometriosis?

Hi, I wondered if anyone could advise me on the pain I’m experiencing, I’ve suffered with irregular periods since starting at 15 and have always had pain shooting through my knee just before I get my period, it has recently become incredibly painful and has now suddenly started in both legs (previously only my right side was painful) and for the past few days I’ve had a terrible trapped wind type pain in my shoulder and shoulder blade. I went to see my GP a few weeks ago when the pain was only in one leg but I had suffered a sudden severe attack of pain one evening, It was so bad felt like I was in labour so made an appointment the next day. She has referred me to see a gynaecologist and has requested i have a Laparoscopy as my mum suffered from extreme endometriosis! I’ve had pre cancerous cell on my cervix a few years ago and had half my cervix removed as treatment, I’ve also had scans in the past to check my ovaries and everything seemed fine, but I’m really worried that the pain has suddenly got much more intense, spread to other areas and it seems pretty persistent! Any ideas what’s going on?

  • Hi Anna1988. Welcome to the forum.

I'm afraid that no one here (except the nurses) is medically qualified, and it really wouldn't matter if we were, because it's close to impossible to make any sort of diagnosis from a list of symptoms.

We can, however, offer advice and guidance based on our own experiences and common sense. Sometimes it needs a person outside a situation to look in and suggest what might be done.

Given that the pain has worsened I suggest you need to go back to your GP to discuss your worsened symptoms. You didn't say whether your referral was "urgent" or routine. If it's a routine referral then your GP may be able to suggest a hospital with a shorter waiting list, or may consider it appropriate to upgrade it to urgent. Of course, this is your GP's decision, based on your clinical needs and what is actually possible in your region.

Regarding the pain, the GP should be able to give you something to control it so that you're not suffering as badly while you're waiting. Be sure to discuss pain relief when you see her again.

Sorry I can't tell you what's wrong with you, but I hope this is still useful to you.

  • Hi Anna

I've just found your post and just wondering if u ever received a diagnosis? Your symptoms sound very similar to mine, started with right sided abdominal/pelvic pain in February, like period type pain, ache in right leg, pain in right shoulder at times and now spread across to left side but not as bad or persistent as right side, frequency and urgency to urinate. I also had 2 bouts of severe abdominal pain where like u felt like i was in labour! I also had vomiting and diarrhoea. I've just come back from seeing my gynaecologist for the first time and she's suggested a diagnostic laporoscopy for endometriosis. I hope u got some answers and are better than u were!
