Worried about aching left leg? Scared it could be serious?

Please read through.

I've had a sore aching in my left thigh and buttocks mainly, and in my left ankle. It doesn't stop me walking or moving, but it has the same sensation if you had run or exercised, but I don't as I am very inactive and only walk my dogs, that is the only exercise I get. It is mostly at night when I lay down to watch tv. It doesn't keep me awake at night, it flares up and then goes down again. It's not painful, just an aching, no swelling, no redness, but I have a terrible fear of blood clots and pulmonary embolisms and cancers, as I suffer with horrendous health anxiety.

I had a viral infection, that started at Christmas, and is only now starting to fade away, and I had blood tests that came back as normal. I'm 30 years old, slightly overweight, very inactive lifestyle, hypothyroid (in normal range), and I have PCOS as well (not on any pills for it). my periods are regular since starting my Eltroxin 50mg medication.

I'm a very anxious person, suffer with health anxiety, and depression, so this is starting to freak me out. Of course, I did the worst thing possible - looked on Google, only answers I got were Blood clotting, cancers and tumors. And I have major fears about all 3 of those. So now I'm worse again.

I seen my doctor yesterday about it, and she gave me a physical examination on my leg, and asked me about numbness, pain, bowel problems. Non of which I have, she said it might be it band syndrome, but I looked online and that says about the knee and swelling - both of which I don't have, and my knee isn't the problem.

The problem is the aching in my thigh, and my buttocks, sometimes a little up from my buttocks, but around that left side. I'm really frightened at the moment, I can't sleep and I'm crying, I'm frightened about blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, spinal tumors, ovarian cancer and cancers. I googled and these are some of the things that came up and now my brain is spinning with fear and has debilitated me with panic that its something like these things.

What is it? I've had it a few days, is it something serious like those things? I'm so scared!!

  • Hello my dear Mischa; you have got yourself into a state.  If you have been googling your symptoms I am surprised that you have not already arranged your funeral!  Big mistake.

First of all let me say that nobody on this forum has any medical training to the best of my knowledge.  We cannot diagnose or even guess because we know no more than you do.

I am not clear if your doctor prescribed any course of action or medication for you.  Did you tell her about the symptoms you describe and your fears?  It is a bit difficult for both sides (that is yourself and myself) to communicate fully in this way; the writer assumes that we know things that don't and we at our end may misunderstand something which you believed you had made absolutely clear!

If you have not fully described the symptoms you mention you may want to return for a second visit to your GP (write down all the things you want to mention and the answers that are given).  Or depending on the advice given by your doctor you may want to wait and see how things go.  If there were any obvious symptoms that something was amiss then I think your doctor would have picked up on this.  But as I mentioned I really know don't know what is happening in your body.  I know it is so easy to worry yourself silly and how it can get out of hand.  If you do return to your doctor she may wish to give you something for your anxiety if she has ruled out anything sinister being wrong.

I do hope that you can stop your worrying and get some clear information about whether your symptoms have a physical cause or not.

  • Hi, thank you for replying, and I fully understand no one can give a straight answer. My GP, I told her my leg had been aching past few days, on my left leg, only my upper high, buttocks and slightly above the buttocks, and sometimes my ankle as well. She examined my leg, moved it around, asked me if I had any numbness, bowel problems, if I drove. She said it could be IT band syndrome, but when I Googled that it said it starts in the knee and swelling, neither of which I have, and no pain in the knee. I also told her it was mainly at night when I was laying down, it tended to nag. It rarely bothers me through the day, only at night when I lay down and am resting or watching tv, flares up and then goes down.

She did say if it persisted to come back and would see about getting an X-Ray. My doctors know I suffer with severe anxiety, and I don't want them dismissing me in case there is something seriously wrong, I think that is a main fear with health anxiety.

Thank you, your reply is really kind and understanding. I have no one to talk to this about, or my fears.

  • Hello again.  I should take your GP's advice and return for an x-ray if it doesn't start to improve.  I understand your fear about your doctor dismissing your fears because of your anxiety but I think a good doctor while not overlooking the anxiety factor would be just as thorough as she would be with someone who didn't worry about things so much.  Do you have confidence in your GP?  She at least sounds that she is prepared to look a but deeper if nothing improves.

I tend to be a worrier too - not as seriously as you describe for yourself but I know how worries can get totally out of hand.    So do come and post on here at those awful times when you just cannot sleep or just want to put your fears down on paper.  You will get through this.
