Sore Tongue, post biopsy pain

Just want to say, a tongue biopsy is very painful! I totally underestimated the discomfort.

Had mine 1 week ago, about 6 stitches into the side of my tongue. It’s getting better, but still sore and very painful to eat food. Still on soup for my main meals.

Stitches are uncomfortable, there is a bit of a knot at one end sticking out the tongue, making the tongue lumpy / sore.

What are other people’s experiences? How long does it take before the stitches go? How long before normality?

thanks in advance

  • Hiya Sarahvm

Glad to hear you're feeling better, and fingers crossed you get a brilliant result

    Kind regards Vey

  • Hi Vey,

I hope you are feeling a little better and you managed to get more info regarding the request for Kidney tests...Keep me posted!

just thought I’d let you know that my biopsy results showed severe Oral Lichenoid Inflammation, not cancerous, PHEW!

The consultant in the Max Fax clinic has suggested I get my amalgam fillings replaced with composite ones ( Costly), and have been given a steroid nasal spray to put on my tongue?

Apparently it’s now a process of elimination to find the cause and if it hasn’t gone down in 4 weeks when I return to see him he has suggested another biopsy.

    Hoping it miraculously didsappears...

    All the best Sarah x

  • Hi had a tongue biopsy on Wednesday, it has gone green and I feel sick and sore. I take it's a sign off infection? Help x

  • Ellie, you need to go back to your consultant/gp/casualty asap.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  • Hello

I had a tongue biopsy last Thurs.. 6 days ago.. site of cut still very swollen and pink.. rest of mouth seems to have settled a bit.. extremely sore.. have only just eaten past couple of days.. rinsing regularly with salt water or antiseptic mouthwash.. putting bonjella on wound..

is the still raised pink part of the wound normal..?
    thank you.

  • Hi Christine.  Not quite sure what's normal!!  Had biopsy on side of tongue 5 days ago.  Still swollen and find that tongue rubs on bottom teeth so making more pain .  Can't even touch top lip with tongue.  Taking bg paracetamol and cordosyl mouthwash.  Can't clean teeth very well as scared of touching where stitches are.  Hope you're doing ok

  • Hi,

I had an incisional biopsy on the top of my tongue on Wednesday morning, so this is day 6 of recovery. The swelling has reduced and the pain is very minimal, maybe a 2 out of 10. It's more just uncomfortable and inconvenient feeling the stitches and knowing that something isn't quite right in that area.

What I am struggling with the most is talking and eating. I still can't eat anything other than soup and yoghurt as I'm afraid of irritating the wound while it's still healing or causing it to open. (It already opened once on the day of surgery but it was sealed again).

Can anyone recommend things that are easy to consume while it's still healing? Or has anyone had similar experiences with difficulty eating?

I know it's still early days since having it but it just feels like it's never going to heal or get any better. So frustrated and hungry.

    Thanks

  • Hi .   My biopsy was on side of tongue so should imagine yours on top, might be a bit more uncomfortable to eat etc .  Apart from soup/yogurt didn't find anything else easy!!!!   Was about day 10 when stitches'disolved.  They literally just disappeared!!!   Yes, was starving most of the time .  Results were benign.   So just hang in there.....

  • Hi Elizabeth,

I had a toungue biopsy today right in the middle of my tounge the pain is immense now that my local anisthetic has worn off! The pain is under my jaw and goes right around to my ears did you experience this?
