Just received letter of high grade (severe) abnormal cells

I am 30 this year and for many reasons due to travelling for years and childbirth and periods on appointment days, I have just had my first cervical screening. It has come back in a week as high grade (severe) which has really caught me off guard. Last year I was at the doctors for abnormal heavy bleeding (which ironically was on the day I was meant to have smear) but they said was probably down to the implant, I have also been for a lump on my groin which they thought was an ingrown hair and finally pains in my lower abdominal and pelvis which they thought was possible muscle pull.  I accepted all of these diagnosis and went along with daily life but as soon as I was off work, had child care and hubby back from working away I went for smear. Part of me put off because I didn't want to get judged for how long I had left it since my first ever letter- silly I know! Now I have received the results I feel sick. Thinking all of the complaints last year are now linked and I am thinking the worst. I'm lying in bed ill just thinking about it all! I would like to know if 5 years makes a huge difference in abnormal cells developing into cancerous cells and should I be preparing myself for the works when I go in for the hospital appoint. Which could be up to 2 weeks, only just to get a date!!!! Help, advice, reassurance welcomed. I already hate myself enough for missing so many chances so please no telling off for that- my mam has already had a good go!

  • Thank you, I hope it's the same for me will message tomorrow and let you know

  • Well just back they took 3 biopsies and said I need treatment but I need a general anaesthetic cause my cervix sits to far back. So fingers cud everything is ok

  • Hi

I was hoping for some advice. I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and have been experiences some bleeding after intercourse and unusual discharge. I was sent to the hospital for an ultra sound which showed baby was okay but when the gynaecologist looked she said she could see abnormal cells (with her naked eye, not under a microscope) and I have been made an urgent referral within 2 weeks where I will have a biopsy & I am just terrified really. My last smear was 3 years ago where I had CIN3 and Lletz treatment for that. My next smear would be due at the end of this year. I am just confused because I thought abnormal cells if pre cancerous held no symptoms & weren't visible by the naked eye which has myself convinced I have cervical cancer! Or does pregnancy have any factor in things being different? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

  • they just rang me. All the cells have been removed with a clear margin. They were high grade serve pre cancerous cells but she said all was removed. The doctor did admit she was concerned at the time that they were cancerous but the biopsy has showed it's CIN3 which I'm so relieved about. She said she doesn't normally ring but as I was very worried at the time she did.
so greatful she did has relaxed me.
she said it will still got to a meeting where they will discuss when they will discuss if they want me to re do the lettz treatment to be extra safe or if I will just got back in 6 months for another smear.
hope you are feeling ok, and I'm sure everything will be fine for you as well xx

  • Hi rxemma... I have an appointment for a colposcopy tomorrow, as I received a letter stating high grade serve dyskaroysis was found in my smear test. I am so worried...continuously crying as I am hoping there is nothing wrong with me. Last year I had low grade and not it has changed. I am scared of pain, needles etc and do not know how I will cope with getting Lettz surgery if I have to go through with it, yet I am hoping not. I'm assuming the surgery will hurt and make you feel weak, is that true? Can you go to sleep for that surgery?

  • Oh that is fantastic news, I'm so pleased for you. I'm hoping mines is as well that's been 3 weeks since biopsy so no news is good news. Let me know how u get on at the app. Il keep u up to date with me when I hear xx

  • First thing be positive, I had colposcopy 2014 removed abnormal sells and I again I just had check but this time is low-grade changes then I will have it check again in 12 months I was worry as I had some bleeding between periods, etc. Buy Papillomavirus it's something which goes and comes very depends on your limited system. I would advise as I went through it, better get some positive vibes in your body and go to GP to explain your concern about it and make sure you eat lots of fried veg and be positive all will goes away. Trust me. never had it up to now and I had a very stressful time losing my job and much more during the lockdown, I knew this was the reason to cause the lower grade change. It's very important how you think, what you think is your world. I send you a positive vibe

  • Hi Mandy,

How are you? Did you manage to get an appointment for the colposcopy? I had mine last week, my smear (in Nov) was borderline changes and no HPV but she took 3 biopsies to be on the safe side as I had CIN1 7 years ago but 2 normal smears since.      She also said I had a polyp on my cervix which she cut out but didn't seem too concerned about it. Should get the results in 4/5 weeks, worrying time but trying not to worry.

Hope you have managed to get an appointment and all is well xxx

  • Hi I have exactly your symptoms from bleeding through sex and in-between periods I also have that odour at end of my period I'm 39 this is my first smear since I was 24 I know stupid and now shown high grade severe dyskaryosis and I'm very scared I have another 6 days until my appointment for a biopsy my nurse said she will be able to tell me if it's bad news im now worrying I've left this far too long and the only explanation is cancer I hope everything went well with you please reply I'm going out my mind

    Thankyou

  • Hi,

i have same issue. I was told I have high grade abnormal cells after my colposcopy. It doesn't say pre-cancerous but then I have similar symptoms associated with cancer.
would be interested to know what was the outcome for you.
