Just received letter of high grade (severe) abnormal cells

I am 30 this year and for many reasons due to travelling for years and childbirth and periods on appointment days, I have just had my first cervical screening. It has come back in a week as high grade (severe) which has really caught me off guard. Last year I was at the doctors for abnormal heavy bleeding (which ironically was on the day I was meant to have smear) but they said was probably down to the implant, I have also been for a lump on my groin which they thought was an ingrown hair and finally pains in my lower abdominal and pelvis which they thought was possible muscle pull.  I accepted all of these diagnosis and went along with daily life but as soon as I was off work, had child care and hubby back from working away I went for smear. Part of me put off because I didn't want to get judged for how long I had left it since my first ever letter- silly I know! Now I have received the results I feel sick. Thinking all of the complaints last year are now linked and I am thinking the worst. I'm lying in bed ill just thinking about it all! I would like to know if 5 years makes a huge difference in abnormal cells developing into cancerous cells and should I be preparing myself for the works when I go in for the hospital appoint. Which could be up to 2 weeks, only just to get a date!!!! Help, advice, reassurance welcomed. I already hate myself enough for missing so many chances so please no telling off for that- my mam has already had a good go!

  • Hi there,

I know its kinda late to join in the discussion please accept my apologies..

But i really need some advice.I have just received my results from my smear test which are abnormal high grade  (severe)dyskaryosis.

I have my appointment for a colposcopy on Fri 24th may..

I have been throwing up all day long with worry at least i hope that's the reason.I haven't had a smear since 2013...I have only myself to blame if it's cancer and believe me i hate myself for been so careless.I have 3 children i am so scared.

I hope you ladies are all well with the results from your colposcopy and in good health.

I would be forever greatful for any advice.

    Annie x

  • Hi Anniiee1980. Welcome to the forum.

Obviously this is going to be a shock, but please try not to panic, because high grade dyskariosis is NOT cancer.  These are cellular changes which might turn into cancer if not treated.  But that change isn't going to happen in the next few days, or weeks, or months, but rather a good number of years down the line (if at all).

The colposcopy will assess the extent of the changed cells, and quite possibly they'll be removed there and then.  If not, then you might have a procedure called a LLETZ which will remove them.  These procedures do not require a general anaesthetic.  These procedures are highly effective and the vast majority of women have no further issues once they've recovered from the immediate after effects of the treatment.

So please try not to be worried about this, but rather think of this is as a nuisance that you will get through.

  • Hi Annie,

i had the exact same results, but please try not to worry I made my self that Ill to the point I couldn’t even go to work or face any one..

i had my smear which came back severe high grade dyskarosis which I then had to go for biopsies, wich i have had every year since since having smears..

the biopsies came back as CIN3 which in all honesty made me even worse. I had to go for LLETZ treatment on 31st December 2018 & in all honesty it wasn’t bad at all!

onviously I was never off the phone ringing to see what my results were & when I eventually got them it was good!

They did remove quite a substantial amount of cervix & said they had do go abit deeper than anticipated but he managed to remove all of the bad cells!! & I’m back in July for my next smear.

i Had also just gave birth to my lil girl in June aswell so that probably didn’t help in the way I reacted I had all sorts going through my head & convinced my self I wouldn’t be here to see her grow up.

but please listen to all these lovely ladies that helped me on here I thought the same as you Cancer but all it means is there is a high level of the cancerous cells that could turn in to cancer if not treated.

I made my self Ill & withdrew from family & friends which feels like now for nothing as everything turned out fine in the end!:)

easier said than done I know but at least I’ve been & atleast it’s going to get treated.

if you ever want to chat about anything or have any more questions I’m happy to listen :) xxx

  • this is just a repeat question

i had my smear done on the 9th of April and came back with slightly change cin1 so they sent to get a colopsy and he did a biopsy and he said he thinks he agrees with the smear that was done on the 6th of June  but I got my result Saturday and it’s come back as they have found high grade cancer cells or cin3 does this mean I have cancer cause I’m scared to death I’ve got 2 kids I’m so scared , I’m having to have lletz treatment in 2 weeks I’m so scared cause it said high grade cancer cell or cin3 I’m freaking out

  • Hi lindsayb1988.

This is confusing, because CIN 3 cells are NOT cancer.  They are pre-cancerous cells. This means that if left to their own devices, they might become cancerous in due course.  That is why treatment to remove them is recommended.

What exactly does your letter say they found?  If possible (and without divulging any personal information), please could you type out word for word the actual findings.

  • it’s says it’s revealed high grade cancerous cells or  cin 3 is this the same thing cause I’m freaking out[[ ]]

  • Hi lindsayb1988.

I should say that I'm not a doctor but I am a cancer patient who's been round the block a few times.

That is a sloppy and ambiguous letter. Did they find cells which they can't identify but are either CIN3 or cancer?  Did they mean to say pre-cancerous cells or CIN3, but due to a typo omitted the "pre-"?  Or does this hospital regard CIN3 as an early form of cancer? I believe CIN3 in the US is called stage 0 carcinoma-in-situ, which I think is an inaccurate and confusing name.

However, I would urge you now is not to freak out.  We are culturally accustomed to thinking that cancer is always the grimmest possible news, and something to feared. Well, it's not always bad news, and now many cancers can be effectively cured. Whatever you've got will be treated and you'll be just fine. In a few years you'll just see this as a blip on road that you got through. Just hold on to that thought.  In the past I've had treatment for prostate cancer and I've just had surgery for unrelated bladder cancer - and neither of these is likely to kill me off! I'm just grateful that the NHS has got my back!!

Meanwhile, I think it's possible that your GP surgery will have access to the cytology report of your latest smear test.  If so, ask your GP what the report says and what type of cells have been found. If it's only CIN3 (as I suspect) then they're pre-cancerous.

  • That’s what my thought was have the missed the pre off the pre cancerous cells as it’s left me feeling a right me and I’ve gotta wait till the 2nd to get the treatment I’ve rang my drs to have call with a dr with try and make sense of what the letter means , thank you  I’m currently over thinking when I put it in google and we all know google is bad but it comes up with cin3 so I’m really really hoping it’s that not the high grade cancerous cells

gotta wait for the drs to call tomorrow

the receptionist was really nice and tried to be reassuring cause if it was bad people would be ringing me and I’ve only had a letter

  • Hi,

I’m sorry to comment on an old post but I just wanted to check how you are and what the outcome was for you? I could relate to lots of what you said. I had a smear test a couple of months ago, the results said low grade abnormal cells and HPV. Within 3 weeks of my smear I started to get brown discharge almost daily, and pelvic and lower back pain which comes and goes. GP treated me for PID and gave me different antibiotics but the symptoms are still there. I have a 10 month old baby and I’m absolutely beside myself with worry because of the symptoms and I can’t help but question the accuracy of the initial smear. I have a colposcopy tomorrow which in itself I’m petrified of but I know it needs to be done etc.

I hope you’re well and all is ok.
