Just received letter of high grade (severe) abnormal cells

I am 30 this year and for many reasons due to travelling for years and childbirth and periods on appointment days, I have just had my first cervical screening. It has come back in a week as high grade (severe) which has really caught me off guard. Last year I was at the doctors for abnormal heavy bleeding (which ironically was on the day I was meant to have smear) but they said was probably down to the implant, I have also been for a lump on my groin which they thought was an ingrown hair and finally pains in my lower abdominal and pelvis which they thought was possible muscle pull.  I accepted all of these diagnosis and went along with daily life but as soon as I was off work, had child care and hubby back from working away I went for smear. Part of me put off because I didn't want to get judged for how long I had left it since my first ever letter- silly I know! Now I have received the results I feel sick. Thinking all of the complaints last year are now linked and I am thinking the worst. I'm lying in bed ill just thinking about it all! I would like to know if 5 years makes a huge difference in abnormal cells developing into cancerous cells and should I be preparing myself for the works when I go in for the hospital appoint. Which could be up to 2 weeks, only just to get a date!!!! Help, advice, reassurance welcomed. I already hate myself enough for missing so many chances so please no telling off for that- my mam has already had a good go!

  • Hi,

I'm ok thanks, how are you?

I called the GP yesterday and the receptionist said a nurse/doctor would call me back in the next couple of days as they were very busy so just waiting to see when I speak to them.

I take it you haven't got an appt yet if there's such a long wait in Glasgow? I presume it will be the same here, I did see lots write about an urgent 2 week referral if anything really worrying was seen on the smear or in the changing cells so I'm hoping that means the colposcopy will just be a precaution and at worst it would be treatment for pre cancerous cells. Trying to think that way anyway and stay positive as think it will be a couple of months at least until I'm seen!

    Hope your doing ok

    xxx

  • I have good days and bad days, the nurse did reasurre me but I can't help worry. I think you're right probably a couple of months wait? It's just awful this whole covid mess. Fingers crossed the vaccine starts to make some changes xx

  • Hi xemmax1 I just read your story - how did you get on?

I hope all was well in the end? X

  • H Hope everyone is ok!
    sorry to jump on thread.
I had my smear 2 weeks I'm 27 this is my second first was fine. had no worries symptoms or bleeding.

today I had a phone call offering me a cancellation appointment for a colopspy for this Thursday.
I was very confused as had no results back.
the women said she wasn't sure but I should get a letter soon explains all. She was just ringing as they had a cancellation as my original appointment wasn't yet booked in.
All she told me was it was to do with Abnormal cells but she was just in charge of appointments.

I rang my doctors they had no results on the system yet. I am in shock and have been worrying all day! I'm mum of young children and can't help but think the worst.

Has anyone had any thing similar.

  • Hi,

im in the same boat just now. For the last 3 years I've had 4 smears all abnormal then I had to go for a colposcopy which came back normal, November there went for my yearly smear and got my results and a letter for another colposcopy for Friday so 4 days notice. My results were high risk HPV and cell changes, I foned the nurse at the surgery, they try and keep you calm and I asked her how much of a change was there, she said substantial change. I was thankful because she was honest, but omg I cant think straight I'm ill with it all, an app that quick does not look good.

  • Yeah it's the quickness of it that worrying me.
although this was a cancellation and my original appointment was apparently on the letter I haven't got yet so don't know how much the wait was originally.

Im the same I haven't been able to eat properly I'm just panicking i did ring my go and they said they can arrange for a telephone appointment for doctor to go through the results but that wouldn't be till Thursday and my colopspy is Thursday at 9 so was not much point.

im glad I only have to wait a few days as I think I would be panicking for longer. Hope it goes well Friday. Let me know.

  • The last time I waiting 12 weeks which was hard. So thankful only a few days this time. I hope all goes ok for Thursday and you can let me know how you get on

  • I went this morning and they confirmed it was high grade severe changes.
I had the lettz treatment then and there. Wasn't painful and was quick.
Althiugh still not very reassured as I have to wait 4 weeks to the biopsy results.
The doctor said they couldn't rule anything out tillo these arrive. Although the nurse said to her it looked straight forward now the worrying part to wait for the Biopsy results.

  • Hey, I'm glad it went ok, 4 weeks hopefully it comes back before hand. Try not and worry () easy said than done I know. My turn tomorrow, then my waiting will start along with you.

  • Good luck.
hope it goes well keep us updated.
honestly treatment was nothing to worry about didn't take long and I didn't feel anything other than a bit of pressure.
bit of period cramp pains now but nothing major.
