Just received letter of high grade (severe) abnormal cells

I am 30 this year and for many reasons due to travelling for years and childbirth and periods on appointment days, I have just had my first cervical screening. It has come back in a week as high grade (severe) which has really caught me off guard. Last year I was at the doctors for abnormal heavy bleeding (which ironically was on the day I was meant to have smear) but they said was probably down to the implant, I have also been for a lump on my groin which they thought was an ingrown hair and finally pains in my lower abdominal and pelvis which they thought was possible muscle pull.  I accepted all of these diagnosis and went along with daily life but as soon as I was off work, had child care and hubby back from working away I went for smear. Part of me put off because I didn't want to get judged for how long I had left it since my first ever letter- silly I know! Now I have received the results I feel sick. Thinking all of the complaints last year are now linked and I am thinking the worst. I'm lying in bed ill just thinking about it all! I would like to know if 5 years makes a huge difference in abnormal cells developing into cancerous cells and should I be preparing myself for the works when I go in for the hospital appoint. Which could be up to 2 weeks, only just to get a date!!!! Help, advice, reassurance welcomed. I already hate myself enough for missing so many chances so please no telling off for that- my mam has already had a good go!

  • Hi,

im so sorry you're going through this worrying time. I had similar symptoms with severe Pre cancerous sells back in 2007.

when you have a colposcopy, a dye is put on your cervix that highlights any abnormal cells, so the nurse/doc can usually recognise these cells before needing a biopsy and can be removed successfully.

did she remove the cells there and then for you?
It's unusual they didn't pick up changes during smear etc as they are usually slow glowing cells, but some can be fast, which mine were also. I had to wait 2 weeks for my results and since then I've not had anymore severe Pre cancerous cells xx

  • Hi good morning and thank you for your response

No cells were removed but she did do i biopsy

So just a waiting game im just so stunned as to the quickness off change from no issues last September to abnormal cells this September really shocking how the body works

    Thanks again x

  • Hi everyone,

On her as anxious like everyone else. I'm due a colposcopy after cell changes and high risk hpv.. But told today of the backlog it might not be until at least 4 months time? Has anyone looked into private?

    Xxx

  • Hi ya sorry new to this group just been through exactly the same though had my colposcopy the 21st December I had high grade severe to it's really scary isn't it. Where about are you as I had my letter and the hospital appointment all within 5 days and was seen on the Monday as I say so really quick, Iv just phoned for my results they said looks like biopsy's came back clear with hpv but will need investigating due to the smear coming back highgrade severe. Just want to say don't worry to much it wasn't no where near as bad as I thought it would be I had the lletz treatment there and then and was home within a hour or so. Is there any chance you could phone your local colposcopy clinic and see if there is anyway can be sent sooner as you are anxious? X

  • Hi there

i have been referred for an examination of my cervix at hospital.

Had minor changes to cell in October 19 then no further changes to cells in April 20 but high risk HPV.

Had bleeding two weeks before period last week and contacted GP who examined cervix and told to contact if further changes. More bleeding this week and GP now referring me to hospital.

Very worried as said would get contact in next two weeks for appointment but given Covid I'm thinking GP must be concerned.

    I would appreciate any advice.

    thanks

    Mary

  • I'm in Glasgow, I'm just so worried about the wait as I feel the colposcopy is the decider what to do and how severe the changes really are? I'm sure there's lots of women feeling that same in the que. I'm trying not to overreact but I'm sure there's timescales for a reason x

  • Hi Mandy,

I am in the same boat, I had a smear at the begining of November that came back HPV negative but said cell changes had been found and I would get an appointment for a colposcopy in 8 weeks. Did your letter say what type of cell changes? A lot of people are talking about getting mild or severe cell changes but my letter just said changes.

I'm from Ayr and not heard anything yet and worried about it being put back to coronavirus, have you heard anything about an appointment?

Another reason I'm worried as it says in the leaflet that if your HPV negative they don't check cells and you just go back to normal smears and no need for colposcopy so don't really know why they checked to see cell change with me.
Such a worrying time, let's hope we don't need to wait mucg longer, hope all goes well with you

    xx

  • Hi there,

I spoke to the nurse at my gp and she stated my cell changes were mild. Why they don't put this in the letter though? Mine came back high risk HPV aswell. I would call and ask for your results in a bit more detail as to the cell changes. Currently in Glasgow there is a 20 week waiting list for colposcopy appointments, I was told and hopefully it happens that extra clinics are being set up? It is worrying but I'm trying to stay positive, I also stated I was available for any cancellations anywhere anytime. Not trying to que jump as I know so many in the same boat, I just know some women don't attend these appointments either?? Best of luck to you stay positive, hopefully we'll hear something soon xx

  • Hi,

Thank you for getting back to me, I will give my GP a call on Monday to find out a bit more detail, it is concerning if there is a 20 week waiting list to be seen but hopefully things get better and we are seen sooner!

Hope all goes well with you and we hear something soon xxx

  • Hey how are you? Did you get any information from your gp? Xx
