Just received letter of high grade (severe) abnormal cells

I am 30 this year and for many reasons due to travelling for years and childbirth and periods on appointment days, I have just had my first cervical screening. It has come back in a week as high grade (severe) which has really caught me off guard. Last year I was at the doctors for abnormal heavy bleeding (which ironically was on the day I was meant to have smear) but they said was probably down to the implant, I have also been for a lump on my groin which they thought was an ingrown hair and finally pains in my lower abdominal and pelvis which they thought was possible muscle pull.  I accepted all of these diagnosis and went along with daily life but as soon as I was off work, had child care and hubby back from working away I went for smear. Part of me put off because I didn't want to get judged for how long I had left it since my first ever letter- silly I know! Now I have received the results I feel sick. Thinking all of the complaints last year are now linked and I am thinking the worst. I'm lying in bed ill just thinking about it all! I would like to know if 5 years makes a huge difference in abnormal cells developing into cancerous cells and should I be preparing myself for the works when I go in for the hospital appoint. Which could be up to 2 weeks, only just to get a date!!!! Help, advice, reassurance welcomed. I already hate myself enough for missing so many chances so please no telling off for that- my mam has already had a good go!

  • Hi JAL88

    I'm not a doctor.

This particular question has arisen before on this forum, and there is a web page which discusses results. I suggest you read the rest of this posting before visiting the web page.

    http://about-cancer.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cervical-cancer/getting-diagnosed/screening/results

The word "severe" looks frightening but these are not cancer cells. They're cells that might develop into cancer if left untreated. The cells will be examined, and if necessary, you will be given treatment to remove them. There are a number of different treatment options that will remove the abnormal cells, and you will be offered the most appropriate. As far as I'm aware, these treatments are quick and effective, and don't have any long term side effects. After one treatment, you should be ok.

I hope you find this reassuring.

  • Hello. I just wanted to echo telemando - the smear does not diagnose cancer, just shows any abnormality in the cells. These abnormalities can sometimes lead to cancer if untreated. I wouldn't have thought your other complaints are due to this as the abnormal cells don't tend to cause any problems as far as I know. But might be worth going back to speak to your GP now you have results and are worried.

I have been to colposcopy (where they look at your cervix under a microscope) and it is ok really, everyone was lovely and put me at ease. I think it took about twenty minutes in all.  They can sometimes tell you their impressions there and then (they did with me), although also might take a biopy. I had a biopsy and it was not too painful and showed up no cancer which was what they had predicted. Mine was not for abnormal smears but another problem, but thought I'd share my experience incase it helps

    Hope that helps.

  • I’m so sorry for the way you feel. I understand. These aren’t cancer cells, but cells that may turn cancerous if left untreated for many years. It takes 10-15 years for pre-cancer to progress to cancer. If you already have cancer cells, this would show up as malignancy. However, in your case, this does not appear to be the scenario.

My thoughts are with you x

  • Hi, not sure whether you will reply as it was so long ago now but just read this thread and it resonates so much with me! Was just wondering how you got on? I am waiting for my colposcopy appointment which is in 8 days after receiving letter saying high grade (severe) dyskariosis and I am so worried it is unreal. You just absolutely assume the worst don’t you?

Anyway just wanting to know how you got on at yours?

  • I was same high grade they did coloposmy (Sorry not sure how spell it ) and a biopsy none really hurt just uncomfortable  x waited for results and was ok no cancer ....now I've just had mamogram and been called back for further tests on my right breast im scared to death x....

  • Hi I have just received the exact same results on Friday high grade severe  I am 28 & have always had low grade abnormal on my previous smears.. the results have hit my that hard I haven’t left the house since Friday.. I have a 6 month old baby girl & an 11 year old son who has stayed at his fathers since Friday as I’m in that much of a state

  • Hi all,

i am new on here & just looking for a little bit of advice..

i am 28 & been having my cervical smears since 2015

the first one that year came back as low grade changes I was sent to the coloscopy clinic were they took a sample of my cervix & then put me on yearly smear tests...

my 2016 swab came back with the same results & again had the biopsy & was told again to follow up in a year..

so 2017 I received again the same results & again had to attend the coloscopy clinic. But I then found out I was pregnant so obviously could not attend the biopsy appointment.

i gave birth to my little girl in June 2018 & since October time I have been bleeding between my period & also after intercourse... I have a lot of abdominal twinges & lower back pain on & off & also sharp pain now & then around the spleen area.... & my discharge has also been very watery but then can suddenly turn to pinky/red! The smell is rancid like dead rotting flesh!!?? Could any one have any more info on this?

On the 9th of November I past a large amount of blood clots... so I’ve been to my GB on numerous occasions been fobbed off with water infections & bacterial infections even tho all my swabs have came back negative!?

But today November 2018 I received my smear results which have came back as high grade severe dyskaryosis!

i am very worried in fact I’m making my self Ill to the point I haven’t gone to work & my eldest son as had to sleep at his fathers as I can’t let him see me in this state!

All my symptoms seem to be very matching with cervical cancer to start with & then receiving these results I’m in a right state!

Could I allready have the cancer? & I’ve also read symptoms like this don’t usually occur until the advanced stages which aren’t treatable!?

How can my tests go from low grade abnormal to severe high grade in the space of 1 year & 2 month?

In that length of time is it possible to develop cancer?

I would really appreciate some advice from people who are going through or who have allready been through this night mare..

i cant stop crying thinking the worst & thinking my kids might be with out a man my daughter is only 6 month I am deverstated by the results & symptoms I’m having..

just any advice would be great x

  • Hey,  I had the exact same results I went for a smear, told me my results would take at least a week the next day I got a phone call I needed to go back in for more tests the results were abnormal... I asked what it was, severe,  I said I was on a period but that didn't matter I was terrified.

So went back in they did a colosp..... Can't spell!!! They took out the infected cells.... the severe ones,  didn't hurt.... I watched it on a tv... seemed so surreal. But the severe doesn't mean cancer!! Just very close!! I was then gong back I think every 6 months to the hospital so they can look under a microscope etc.... the results cane back abnormal again but they decided they couldn't take any more cervix ad this might hinder children in the future. They hoped they would correct themselves. Then finally they did..   I had yearly smears after they started coming back normal..... Not had one for couple of years now so hoping now that's the end of it.  hope this helps any questions please ask

    Xxxx

  • Hi,

Im also new to this but when i read your post I just had to reply to you as I had the exact same symptoms and diagnosis as you almost 4 years ago, first of all I completely truely understand how worried and scared you are feeling,  I felt the very same, but these results (severe/ high grade mean your cells are more likely to turn cancerous IF UNTREATED, there are many different proceedures done and a specific one will be picked to suit you but there is absolutely nothing to worry about as your results are showing PRECANCEROUS cells of high grade, which means they are NOT cancerous but if not treated could possibly turn cancerous, the bleeding in between periods is a sign of the abnormal cells being high grade meaning they are at the nearer stage of turning cancerous but are NOT cancerous yet,  thats how I went for a smear in the first place, I had the bleeding and pain in between periods so went to the gp and got a smear , when my results came back same as yours i was truely petrified but i know now i had absolutely nothng to worry about , so once you keep your appointments and get regular check ups to follow after your treatment you will be flying it, I wish you all the best on your journey and would love to hear an up date on how you get on, wishing you and your family a lovely christmas and a healthy happy new year for 2019.. I truely hope this has helped even just a little at this very stressful time xx

  • Hi all :)

thsnk you you so much for the replies it has helped a lot & I’m gradually starting to calm down a little bit! I went for my coloscopy appointment Wednesday.. & if any one is panicking this is the 3rd I have had in 4 years & it really isn’t bad! The nurse always gets me to do a little cough as she takes the biopsy which takes your mind away from the sharp nick & there’s always another lovey nurse stood next to you making conversation it’s honestly nothing to be scared of :)

but any way she applied the acid to my cervix which immediately brought up all the cells & she said straight away by looking it’s CIN 3 but won’t know how far they have spread or if they have advanced until the results which take up to 4 weeks but she did say she will try to get them sped up for me! & I will obviously have to have a procedure to remove them..

I did go on a bit stupid asking all sorts of questions as I was still panicking about it all & 1 of my main questions was if cancer was present would she be able to see it from the examination? & she said usually if there is cancer yes it can be spotted.. is that correct?

Tbh ladies it’s not the results that is getting me it’s more these symptoms I’m having as there seems to be no explanation as all my other swabs were negative & cc apparently only shows symptoms in its later stages? So if it’s not an infection & isn’t related to CIN 3 I cant get out of my head is there something allready there that’s causing them? But then I think we’ll the nurse said if it was there it would be spotted?

God all sorts go round your mind doesn’t it! Well any way I’m currently 3 days in to the 4 week wait so I will update you ladies on my results when they eventually arrive lol but also wishing you all a lovely Xmas & a happy new year take care all & im sure we will be updating each other over the period!

    Thsnks every one :) xx
