Hpv positive and borderline abnormal cells

Help.

Advice needed. I had a smear test 1 week ago, results back already. I am positive for HPV and have borderline abnormal cells..... I have an appointment for a coloscopy in 19days. It's already been booked for me. I'm only 27, I am so scared. Dreading the worse. Do not know what to expect.

Am I being dramatic or should I be worried?

Thanks xxx

  • I had my abnormal cells removed in 2007. Then had clear smears for 5 years, every year. Then clear smears until Nov 2018 where they picked up I had HPV but still no abnormal cells, so I was tested in Nov 2019 still no abnormal cells was asked to come back a year later. In January 2020 I went to the doctor with abnormal bleeding and was diagnosed with cervical cancer in April. There is a cervical cancer called adenocarcinoma which the smears very rarely pick up as abnormal changes, it used to make up around 20% of cases but that percentage is rapidly growing.  Due to my history and the fact I had HPV (which they only just tested for) I should have been seen immediately but that's the NHS for you. If you have HPV and you have a history of abnormal cell changes you should be seen immediately.

Chemo was ok but on a lot of tablets!

  • Can we talk about it please im 27 second smear 3 kids and been with my partner 7 years just gone my results show hpv and boardaline cell change an appointment has been made for me at my hospital for a colposcpy. • Hi I've sent you friend request xx

  • Hi!

I had my smear results back today with the same results as you, HPV positive and abnormal cells low grade dyskariosis. I'm petrified! Can you please let me know the procedure of a colposcopy which I'm waiting for and what happened afterwards.

    Thankyou

  • Please can you private message me with some information on this, if you don't mind? this was the result I had from my smear today and I'm so scared.

    thankyou

  • Hi Chloe, I'm sorry to hear that the results weren't what you wanted to hear. I have also had similar results last year and this year and had a colposcopy awaiting another colposcopy appointment. Although I cannot give you any direct answers to your questions about after the colposcopy, but I wanted to help you with my experience of one. Please Don't be scared, it is very much like a smear. I had worked myself up reading things on the internet and it wasn't what I expected at all. I think I was more nervous about my dignity in all fairness! Not painful, little uncomfortable, slight bleeding and discharge afterwards. But I went about my normal day straight afterwards. Hope this has helped a little bit.

  • Thankyou! To be honest the procedure can't get worse than what I have been through for the last few months, I've had a few cervical problems and scans and internals etc so this will probably be like them but I'm just worried about the result. It's just not the letter you expect from a smear is it, not what you expect to happen to you etc.

can I ask what happened after you had it done? Was it all ok etc?

    Thankyou x

  • It's not nice at all receiving that letter, and it doesn't help that it's not explained clearly. The anxiety it causes is not not nice. I feel for you that you have had so many procedures done, it's not nice to go through, luckily mine came back clear last time. I'm waiting for next colposcopy which I'm dreading, my mum tested positive for the brca gene, so my anxiety is through the roof, I'm waiting for my referral for the test. Please let me know how you get on, I'll be thinking of you and hope you get the best outcome. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Xxx

  • Hi Helen,

Thanks for sharing. I was diagnosed with high risk hpv last August and again this year. I had a colposcopy due to borderline cells being present 20 years ago but don't think the NHS tested for hpv way back then.

I've read that the longer you have hpv, the harder it is to get rid of and am worried that I may have had it all this time. Do you know if a colposcopy gets rid of the hpv virus as well as the abnormal cells? I hope your colposcopy went well and that you've got the all clear.
