Hpv positive and borderline abnormal cells

Help.

Advice needed. I had a smear test 1 week ago, results back already. I am positive for HPV and have borderline abnormal cells..... I have an appointment for a coloscopy in 19days. It's already been booked for me. I'm only 27, I am so scared. Dreading the worse. Do not know what to expect.

Am I being dramatic or should I be worried?

Thanks xxx

  • Hi,

my Daughter has just tested positive for HPV and borderline abnormal cells - just waiting for an appointment for a colposcopy. She is naturally worried and would appreciate any advice on your recent experience.

  • Hi Claire, I'll send you a friend request now so we can chat.

  • Where will I find your friend request as I’m a newbie at all this lol?

  • When I was 27 I had HPV virus with abnormal cells, I remember they attempted 2 laser sessions but eventually landed up with a loop where they cut off part of the cervix. I have tested clear and normal for nearly 30 years but my results today I received said I have HPV virus again with abnormal cells. I am now waiting for an appointment. I am so shocked after all these years to have the virus again and it's really upset me. I am 61 years old.

  • I am also in this position but for myself. I have seen varying times for appointments for the colposcopy appointments.

  • Hi

I had the HPV virus with abnormal cells at 30, had them removed and had yearly clear smears ever since.  I tested positive for HPV recently which the doctors ignored and then after abnormal bleeding was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma 1B1 which had been growing all the time too far up my cervix for them to pick up on the smear. Don't wait for an appointment you need to be seen urgently.

  • Hi,

I received a coloposcopy appointment for 19th March 2021, I've tried to see if they had any earlier appointments but they haven't. My results showed High grade HPV with low grade dyskaryosis of the cells. I already had a loop in 1987 and have had clear results ever since until now when I have HPV virus again. I can't believe I've got the virus again. The last test in 2016 showed clear, so I don't know how many years I've had this virus between then and now. I was having yearly tests then it changed to 5 yearly tests because I had been clear for so long. I've been with the same partner for 4 years unless he was carrying it. He did tell me years ago he had a problem with warts on his hands. When I google it it says people can carry the virus for years. If I've already had a loop will they be able to do another loop, I will find out on the 19th March and keep everyone informed of my progress. It has really upset me now and playing on my mind.

  • Hi

I was in the same situation. If you are in the UK they have only just started testing for HPV with smears in the past few years. I think 2018, So you may of had clear results but still had HPV. I think this is what happened to me and i wouldn't want it to happen to anyone else.

Good luck if you need any more information give me a shout. Although I'm starting chemo tomorrow so my reply maybe a while

  • That's interesting I didn't realise they have only just been testing for hpv since 2018 so I could have had it for years and didn't know. I have read if you've had it twice they might suggest an hysterectomy. At my age I'm past the menopause so I won't be having children but I'll have to wait and see. I will mention after my loop it does mention having a premature Labour which I had with my daughter at the age of 33. She was 10 weeks early and only weighed 2.5lbs. Yes I am in the UK. Good luck and I hope it all goes ok x

  • Hi Giggsy,

Sorry to hear what you are going through.

How long since your first HPV positive/abnormal cells and the next one (which was ignored)?

My wife has had HPV positive + low grade for over 3 years now and today was told she is still borderline changes + HPV positive and sent for another colposcopy in six months. This is despite a colposcopy last year showing she's clear - they almost said don't come back for three years but she insisted on a follow up smear which she had in January (which is the one today's results relate to).

Not much seems to be known about persistant high-risk HPV infection - the 10% who don't see it clear in two years.
