Dull aching in right leg

Hiya,

My name is Emma, im 18 and am getting concerned about pains in my right leg.

As I can recall, I've been getting the pain for about a year or so but it isn't constant, it comes about every couple of months or so. I started to think this might not be quite right last week when I got the pain again (it's like a really heavy, dull ache which feels deep, in my bone rather than muscular and resembles an intense sort of growing pain). It came on in the evening and continued into the night, keeping me awake until the early hours of the morning. It doesn't seem to be affected with movement, if anything it is worse when I'm still or laying in bed. The bulk of the pain was in my thigh nearish my knee but it radiated down my leg then a bit into my pelvis.

I'm hoping to book an appointment with the GP soon but fear they may just overlook it as muscluar or no important as it's not constant. But I'm getting pretty worried about it as there is no obvious reason for this pain at all, I haven't injured my leg and surely I'm past the age of growing pains now, equally I've always known growing pains to affect both legs rather than one.

I'd be grateful if anyone can help with suggestions or their own personal expereicences, thank you!

Emma

    Hi Lou,

I am sorry to hear about your leg pain. It sounds as if this is giving you more trouble than your breast at the moment. I am not a doctor, but I have had leg pain for a number of years. Do you see any pattern to when you get the pain, where in the leg you get it, or what you are doing at the time?

I have arthritic problems with my knees, hips and ankles and neurological problems in both legs as well. I eventually had 2 knee replacements, which has helped my knee pain. Unfortunately, nothing has helped the neurological pain. I tried Gabapentin for some time, but this didn't help me either.

The most likely cause of severe pain of sudden origin could be a DVT, so I'm glad to hear that you have already been checked for this. It is not at all unusual for us to persuade ourselves that the slightest niggle is cancer related, but this is unlikely when you have had surgery so recently. It is all too easy to attribute your pain as stress related, but if it continues, don't hesitate to see your GP again. He might refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon or a neuroloist for further investigation.

I hope that you manage to find out what is causing this soon and ,that your chemo goes well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi jolamine

Ibhave had lower back pain since December and drs said it's probably just my job, as I work with children. My leg pain started 5 weeks ago just before I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. My CT scan was clear, but the pains are getting worse and I'm getting terrible night sweats too.
I had my lumpectomy 3 weeks ago and got clear margins and nothing in lymph nodes, but I'm now worried it may of gone through my blood stream to my bones. Every time I speak to my dr he just says try not to worry.
mum reallybscared they have missed something, surely I should of had other scans too to confirm everything is clear before I start the chemotherapy.

  • Hi Loumw,

There are three tests that are done more or less routinely at the breast clinic. First of all a mammogram and/or an ultrasound and a biopsy. If the cancer is clearly visible with these, then there is no need for further testing.

It is good news that the lymph nodes are clear and that you had clear margins after your surgery. Have you started taking any medication since your lumpectomy? These can cause night sweats.

Cancer usually spreads via the lymph nodes, so the fact that these are clear should be reassuring for you.  They will probably test you again after you've had your chemo. If you feel that your leg problem is getting worse ,go and see your GP and ask him what else can be done for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi there!

I just wondered if you ever got to the bottom of this Emma, or anyone with same symptoms? I have got the exact same problem and it's exactly as you describe!
Did you find yours ached before your period each month? I've read about girls getting leg pain with endometriosis and wondered if this could be the cause and reason it's being undetected.

would love to hear  from you

    Thanks do much

    Kelly

  • Hi elena, I was wondering what has happened to you as my mother is experiencing the same symptoms and if you could write back ASAP that would be much appreciated xx

  • Hi Marta

fortunately the pains have subsided. I'm not sure why they came on and why I don't have them anymore but what I have changed is that I am now in HRT and maybe that has helped. I am 54 and quite fit. It is the only thing I've done differently. Hope that helps

  • Hi all,

I just came across this thread when I googled my symptoms AGAIN.

So this pain started when I was 12. I usually got it in both legs. I have had xrays, scans, blood tests etc, over about 2 years and they ruled out any malignancies or arthritis. I was diagnosed with "growing pains". Thing is, I still get them and I'm 28! I just frustratingly googled my symptoms to see if there was something I'm missing. I'm now starting to think it may be connected to my circulation as I've since had a DVT in my left calf. I'm sat here now with pains stretching all the way from my right hip and in to my right ankle, my right foot is cold, my left is not. Every time I revisit the GP again, they say it's a sprain or refer me to physio. It literally feels like someone is scraping out my bone marrow.
Anyone else relate and had a diagnosis yet?

  • hello ,

I have the same issue as you! I had a toothache like pain

in my left knee starting when I was 13 , I went to the doctors who did bloods , xrays and a MRI etc. Results came back as nothing for a year I kept going back with the same issue but they couldn't find anythink. When I was 14 the pain became really intense and spread to my lower leg and to my pelvis area and occasionally it would be in my right knee too. It sometimes brought me to tears! During that year my left leg started to give way when I would stand or walk so I went back to the doctors and I finally diagnosed with hyper mobility syndrome. And I was told to do physio for 6 months every week. I'm now 16 and still get it even worse than it was , I'm not convinced it is hyper mobility. It normally starts at night time and will carry on till the early hours of the morning but it can happen at anytime now! It's so annoying and so strange!!!

  • Hi, I hope you are keeping well?

sorry I haven't updated before now, I haven't received notifications & Life in general has been super busy but amazing for me during this strange time.

I received my results and they were clear, my leg pain continues, as I didn't get answers and with COVID & children off making Drs visits difficult I started researching and came across something (not sure what it was) but it explained that sometimes the blood can not pass through veins easily and that Asprin can help, I've tried this over a cpl of days and it definitely relieves the pain for a few weeks,

but.. since my scare in December and having a colposcopy I had my 6 month Screening and all was clear.

    Hi RainbowButterfly,

I think that we've all been knocked out of kilter with the current pandemic.

Thank you for your update. I'm glad to hear that you found that Aspirin helped. This thins the blood and makes it easier for it to pass through the blood vessels, so it makes sense. Have you spoken to your GP since you tried Aspirin? I know that it is difficult to get a face-to-face appointment with your GP at present. Most appointments are done via the telephone, but they can still see you if they deem it necessary.

I am so glad to hear that your 6 month screening was all clear. This must have been a great relief for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
