Dull aching in right leg

Hiya,

My name is Emma, im 18 and am getting concerned about pains in my right leg.

As I can recall, I've been getting the pain for about a year or so but it isn't constant, it comes about every couple of months or so. I started to think this might not be quite right last week when I got the pain again (it's like a really heavy, dull ache which feels deep, in my bone rather than muscular and resembles an intense sort of growing pain). It came on in the evening and continued into the night, keeping me awake until the early hours of the morning. It doesn't seem to be affected with movement, if anything it is worse when I'm still or laying in bed. The bulk of the pain was in my thigh nearish my knee but it radiated down my leg then a bit into my pelvis.

I'm hoping to book an appointment with the GP soon but fear they may just overlook it as muscluar or no important as it's not constant. But I'm getting pretty worried about it as there is no obvious reason for this pain at all, I haven't injured my leg and surely I'm past the age of growing pains now, equally I've always known growing pains to affect both legs rather than one.

I'd be grateful if anyone can help with suggestions or their own personal expereicences, thank you!

    Hi Jade,

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about the pain in both of your legs. You may find that your x-ray won't show up anything untoward, but there are a number of other tests that can be done. There are also a number of different things that could be causing the issues you're experiencing.

I am not a doctor, but just wondered whether or not you've been checked for Diabetes? Many people develop Type 2 Diabetes later in life and, this can result in neurological damage to the legs. Your GP can do a simple test for this.

I would advise you that, if your legs continue to get sorer while you are waiting for your appointment, don't hesitate to get another emergency appointment with your GP or even go to A & E to get it checked out, just in case it is a circulatory problem. These need to be attended to quickly if they do crop up.

We don't seem to have had any answers from the people above. If you want to find out more about aching legs, go to the blue banner at the top of this page, cick on the Search engine and insert 'aching legs' into the search box, then click. This will bring up previous posts about this condition, which I hope you will find helpful.

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi ya

Sorry for taking so long in getting back to you. Well the update is as you know I had an X ray and nothing showed up so I had my MRI done and it's not a Bakers Cyst but a Ganglion Cyst and a Tear in the back of my knee. So I'm now on a waiting list to see a specialist. It maybe a case of key hole surgery. Even tho it's not as painful as it was it will come back if not treated.

So I hope this might help, if nothing shows up on a X ray and you are still suffering, insist on getting an MRI done.

    Hi Dianejef,

Thank you for the update. I am glad to hear that your leg wasn't cancerous.

I am not a doctor, but keyhole surgery should work well for this. Have you been given any indication of how long you may need to wait for surgery?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi all,

Sorry for the late update. I posted regarding my aching thighs. I did go to the doctors and was told it could be varicose veins even though I don’t have any veins protruding. I bought some support tights as advised and wore them everyday and it has helped. I have not worn them now for a couple of months and the problem seems to have got better but not completely gone. I am just monitoring it at the moment so I will keep you updated. I would advise anyone who goes to the doctors and is not happy with the outcome to keep going back if they are still experiencing pains.

    Hi Milsy,

Thank you for your update. I am glad to hear that your problem seems to be due to varicose veins. It is good that your support tights are helping. We all know our own bodies best and have to perservere if we are not getting any answers.

    Kind regards,

  • I have the same aching right leg symptoms which came on about 3 weeks ago. It seems to be worse after driving any distance and also when sitting. No problems walking (I regularly do 12+ miles) or other similar things but kneeling back on my heels (as in` pose of the child') is also very painful incalf area. I am 69 but only recently off HRT.??

    Hi NG,

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about your leg problems. Have you contacted your GP? If not, you should do so, as there are a number of tests s/he can do.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello there,

I have been experiencing a dull ache in my right calf for about a week  ever since I returned from a trip abroad on the plane, sort of a deep dull ache only when I’m resting.

The other night the same pain came on my right arm same side, the pain got more intense in the night to a point where it was so uncomfortable, 111 advised a&e. At A&E they were querying blood clots however after blood tests this confirmed not to be true and sent me home with pain killers and muscle relaxants. However the painkillers only make me sick and numb the pain and muscle relaxants do not make the pain go away,

The pain in my arm has not gone away and is quite intense when resting and the ache in my leg is also still present.

I’m usually very healthy and I’m 20. I have an active job and generally quite an active person

    Anyone got any thoughts?

    Hi Emu,

    Welcome to the forum.

You are young to be having this sort of problem.

It sounds as if a visit to your GP should be your next move. Don't leave it for too long, just in case there are any clots present. Mention to the receptionist that you have been to A & E, but that you are still having problems and would like an emergency appointment.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Yes they did blood tests for blood clots and they said it was clear for this, I can’t tell whether the pain is muscular or bone pain or to do with my circulation, it’s worse when resting and at night. They gave me muscle relaxants in case it’s muscular but they just make me sick and don’t help with the pain.

    Thankyou xx
