Potential skin cancer - awaiting diagnosis

Hi All,

I am new to the site and I apologise in advance for this long post.........I recently went to my GP 2 Thursday's and during the appointment I mentioned that I had 2 moles on my lower back and asked if she could have a quick look to make sure they were nothing to worry about.  She referred me to my local hospital to have them photographed the following day.  At the hospital I was told they would be reviewed within 48 hours by a Dermatologist who would review the pictures and basically triage them to decide how fast I would need to be seen.  He also said that if it was something really bad I would receive a call, not a letter.

I never received a call thank goodness but I did receive an appointment through the post last Tuesday to go to a different hospital to see a Dermatologist this coming Thursday - so it will be 2 weeks from my original appointment with my GP to seeing a Dermatologist.  On the hospital website it says the 'dermatologists view the digitial images and fast-track anyone with suspected skin cancer'.  Two weeks seems fast to me but I'm not sure if it is fast in this process.  I called the number on the letter and asked if I had been fast tracked or if it was just routine, the call handler put me on hold for ages then came back and said she was only a call handler and wasn't medically trained to answer that question.  She advised me to speak to my GP who weren't much help either and just advised me to go to the appointment this Thursday?

Would this be classed as fast tracked or am I worrying over nothing?  What can I expect to happen with the Dermatologist - e.g if they are concerned about the moles will they do it there and then or will I need to wait again for another appointment for that?

Can someone shed any light - I am afraid to google the answers as that my freak me out even more.

Thanksxxx

  • Hi Helen, nice hearing from you. My wound is closed now, I'm looking after the scar, but it's difficult to reach by myself. I might buy something on ebay that helps me apply moisturiser in that area.

Apart from that, I'm looking at my skin on a weekly basis to see if there is anything changing (I think I'll be a bit paranoid for a while hehehe)

When is your wide excision? Have you booked it yet?

    Enjoy your holiday!

    Best,

    Rafael

  • Hi Rafael,

Good to hear from you and so glad the wound is healing well. I have just over two weeks until my holiday and I am fully prepared!  The date for my WLE came on Monday, I requested for it to be after my holiday, so it's booked for two days after I return on 24th August. I have bought some low backed vest tops so I can keep the area clear on my back.

I am a bit paranoid too, I am checking my families moles, even a man in my local shop I stopped and asked him if he had a dodgy looking mole seen to on the back of his leg! He was wearing shorts at the time! Also with sharing my diagnosis on Facebook, I have prompted two people to go and get checked too!

    Keep in touch

    Helen

  • Well, if anything we're doing good public service haha

Enjoy your holidays and I hope your WLE doesn't hurt too much.

  • Hi

I too had a suspicious mole removed about 4 weeks ago. I was told results should be about 2 weeks but still not received a letter or call back.  I did speak to the secretary about a week ago and she said results were back but surgeon not happy with them.

what exactly does that mean ?
Starting to get a little stressed now. Is no news good news!
