Potential skin cancer - awaiting diagnosis

Hi All,

I am new to the site and I apologise in advance for this long post.........I recently went to my GP 2 Thursday's and during the appointment I mentioned that I had 2 moles on my lower back and asked if she could have a quick look to make sure they were nothing to worry about.  She referred me to my local hospital to have them photographed the following day.  At the hospital I was told they would be reviewed within 48 hours by a Dermatologist who would review the pictures and basically triage them to decide how fast I would need to be seen.  He also said that if it was something really bad I would receive a call, not a letter.

I never received a call thank goodness but I did receive an appointment through the post last Tuesday to go to a different hospital to see a Dermatologist this coming Thursday - so it will be 2 weeks from my original appointment with my GP to seeing a Dermatologist.  On the hospital website it says the 'dermatologists view the digitial images and fast-track anyone with suspected skin cancer'.  Two weeks seems fast to me but I'm not sure if it is fast in this process.  I called the number on the letter and asked if I had been fast tracked or if it was just routine, the call handler put me on hold for ages then came back and said she was only a call handler and wasn't medically trained to answer that question.  She advised me to speak to my GP who weren't much help either and just advised me to go to the appointment this Thursday?

Would this be classed as fast tracked or am I worrying over nothing?  What can I expect to happen with the Dermatologist - e.g if they are concerned about the moles will they do it there and then or will I need to wait again for another appointment for that?

Can someone shed any light - I am afraid to google the answers as that my freak me out even more.

Thanksxxx

  • I'm in the same boat. Had an appointment with my GP two weeks ago, he referred me to a fast track dermatologist appointment, which I had on Friday. I was hoping to have my mole removed then, but they just took a photo and said I would be called to schedule the biopsy.

I just want to get rid of it asap and know if I have cancer or not... At least I know what I have and can plan my life accordingly.

I just hate this 2-week wait.

Now, I try not to panic, so I think you shouldn't panic either. The 2-week appointment is given when the mole requires attention and further investigation. It doesn't necessarily mean we've got skin cancer. The dermatologist who saw me said it could just come back as a mole with anomalies but not necessarily melanoma. My girlfriend also removed many moles that looked suspicious but just to be on the safe side. It's more common than we think.

Btw, did the doctor say what aspects of your moles looked suspicious?

Let's try to keep calm and avoid google as much as possible. Too scary!

Good luck and keep me posted!

  • Hi rafabeton,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to me....I feel like im losing my mind!

My GP was concerned becausr the size (bigger tha  6mm), shape ( its raised and has a really ragged border), the colour (its several different colours) and its very sore to touch.

As Ive already had the photos Im hoping that if it needs removed then they will do that on Thursday....fingers crossed.

Have you got a date for your biopsy yet?

  • Hi MrsC,

mine was worried about the shape and colour. It's not sore to touch though.

I don't have a date yet. The person responsible for booking it at the Hospital wasn't there on Friday and hasn't returned my calls this week.

I find it difficult to stop thinking about it, but I'm doing the best to stay busy. I think to lose our minds won't help, so we just need to be patient.

My understanding is that they do their best to remove on the same day if it is required. But fingers crossed we'll be fine! :)

I'm angry at myself that I've been looking at it for over a year and then suddenly it looks like I should have taken care of it a long time ago.

  • Hi rafabeton, I hope you are doing ok. I had my Dermatology appointment today and the Dermatologist seemed very relaxed about it all. Ive to get both moles removed and will get an appointment through the post within the next few weeks so Im feeling a lot less stressed. How are you feeling?
  • Hi MrsC_1981, Funny enough, I was also born in 1981 (I guess that's why you have it in your username). I'm glad to hear your dermatologist seemed relaxed. It's great when you remove that worry from your shoulders. I will be removing my mole on Monday, 3rd July, and will have to wait for biopsy results. I also feel a bit less anxious than before, now that I know it will be removed and examined. Fingers crossed!
  • Hi,

I am too waiting for results to the excision of my mole on the 15th June. I was referred under the two week fast track. I had my initial consultation the week before the biopsy, I was told by both the GP I saw and the dermatologist/plastic surgeon that my mole was very suspicious. I have been very worried as there has been no emphasis on the fact the mole could be benign. Following the biopsy the surgeon asked the nurse to mark the sample as urgent. I later discovered that in my area that an urgent biopsy result takes 4 weeks to come back!

The waiting is the worst and I have sought advice from this website and NHS sites only. I am concentrating on ticking the days off as they go by.

I am interested in hearing other people's experiences, especially with waiting times and information they have been given initially.

  • Hi Helen and MrsC,

I had my mole removed this afternoon and was told I would have to wait for 2 weeks for the results.

I will try not to worry about the results that much, but since I will have my hands full trying to look after the scar (it's on my back and I'm by myself, so I can't really reach it..)

The doctor and the nurse were both very nice and gentle.

It's not hurting but it stings a little bit. The difficult part will be to avoid stretching the area since it's close to my shoulder blade.

Helen, I hope you're fine and please try not to worry that much (I know it's difficult!) as at the moment all you can do is wait. :) I assume that waiting time is an estimate with plenty of buffer to keep them on the safe side.

    Take care

  • Hi,

Thanks for your message. Glad the biopsy went well, my mole was in the same place as yours was, so I know what you will be experiencing in the coming days. It's also good to hear that your results will be back in two weeks, for some reason at the hospital where I am treated, the results come back in batches and urgent results take 3-4 weeks to come back. My daughter who is 14 years old now has a mole that needs to be looked at now, so I am having to chase up my results on Friday so I can give the specialist she sees the correct information, as melanoma can be hereditary. My daughter is going to be treated by a different health trust.

Hope all goes well with your recovery and would be good to hear the outcome to biopsy.

  • Hi Helen, the location is a bit unfortunate because I can't reach it and I'm by myself. However, it's not hurting at all, just a bit uncomfortable and I'm having to avoid overstretching the area. Have you already removed the stitches? How does it feel now?

Fingers crossed that your results come back sooner. Estimates are just estimates :)

I'm sorry to hear that you're also concerned about your daughter. I hope your results come back clean so you don't have to worry about yourself and your daughter.

One step at a time! We'll be fine.

    Take care.

  • Hi,

Yes I was advised to take it easy for a couple of weeks. I was lucky enough to have a good plastic surgeon who stitched the wound with dissolving stitches and from the inside. I did know about it when I did too much, as the scar would hurt.

Thank you for your kind words for me and my daughter. I hope you continue to recover well and it would be good to hear about your progress.
