Lump on head and signs of tumour am I going mad :(

I hope someone can help, I found a lump on my head like one really can't move it, went dr they said it's nothing started getting headaches day after drs and then like pressure behind eyes,my ears sometimes feel like your on a plane, went back to drs they said its anxiety and lump is superficial and nothing and to stop stressing, day after this appointment I had tingles in my left arm (which has gone now) and nausea !! Went back to dr he sent me hospital they checked me over and said it is anxiety and stress worrying about the lump, she said she don't know what lump is but it's not a tumour and a unnecessary to have a scan, so I did actually feel better after arm stopped tingling but then headaches changed from back of neck to between eyes!! And I just feel I am falling apart 10 days of headaches that only sometimes go with painkillers and this feeling behind my eyes, but they all say anxiety can it be just that?? I hope so the fear of it being a tumour is scary, I hope someone can help and put my mind at rest I just want these headaches to go!!

  • Keep going to the GP until you are satisfied. Most likely it is anxiety causing the issues.

If the specialists say it isnt a tumor then more often than not it isnt. Lumps can be anything from an infected lymph to fatty deposits to any number of non-tumor/cancer things. Most people have lumps of various types and sizes all over their body.

I do reccomend not obsessing about it, nor worrying. Stress and anxiety can be real issues. Keep you chin up, you have been told its nothing. Treat it like that. Else insist the GP refers you for a scan. But don't worry either way.

  • Hi Shola,

Sadly I also suffer from migraines and mine have been hemiplegic from the outset.  What this means is that with my very first migraine I lost the sight in one eye, became paralysed down one side, was slurring my speech and was in unspeakable pain for many, any hours.  The symptoms then decline but I will continue to be really quite unwell for a few days afterwards.  I have had these now for 20+ years although they are far less frequent as I have got better at preventing them.  I now get ice-piack headaches also which literally feel like out of nowhere someone has slammed an ice-pick through my head, the pain only lasts maybe 5-10 seconds but it completely stops me in my tracks and it will happen a number of times throughout the day for a few days in a row.  I spend more time apologising to the people around me for suddenly screaming at full volume than I do in pain with the ice-pick headaches :D

After a slightly less severe but far more prolonged migraine (I spent 3 months constantly wearing shades, even with blinds down at home and at work, kept a bucket next to me at all times to throw up, and was continually on pain and anti-sickness meds) they did an MRI of my brain and found a tiny white spot on my pons.  This the part of the brain stem that controls our autonomic functions like breathing etc.  This showed as the result of a TIA and was almost definitely caused by having hemiplegic migraines, particularly such a prolonged one.

Thankfully small lesions on our brains can be completely harmless.  I could have 5 times what I have just now without it causing any cognitive deficit at all.  Our brain is very well set-up to protect itself and to allow for the odd bit of damage here and there.

You don't say where the lumps on your head are but obviously brain tumours can rarely be felt as lumps because they are inside our skulls so there is every chance they are unrelated.

The headaches (which do sound very much like migraines) aside, I'm unsure what type of bleeding you are talking about from you ear, but if it is the case that you are just going about your business and happen to notice blood running out of your ear then you need to be calling your GP or taking yourself to an Emergency Department.  There are causes for ear bleeds that are nowhere near as serious as a tumour, but those causes if left untreated can cause you some permanent damage to your hearing so they should be checked out.

  • Hi Nina,

Sadly your description of the headache does sound very much like a tension headache or possibly the start of migraines.  And, although it's not very well understood yet, it is possible to get sensations of tingling and numbness in parts of your body when you have migraines, and nausea is very much a lovely addition we get with migraines and tension headaches :(

As I've said to Shola, brain tumours can rarely be felt because they are inside our skulls, so your lumps are very unlikely indeed to be brain tumours, but I can understand how lumps on your head and awful headaches has caused you this worry.

You don't say where the lumps are but everything you say does ring very true of migraines (with the lumps just being 'one of those things') so I hope that puts your mind at ease a bit, especially as you have been checked over and your doctor isn't remotely thinking anything to do with cancer.

The problem with anxiety is that it can very well cause tension headaches so as long as you're worrying about a tumour you could make your symptoms worse.  If it helps any read my reply to Shola and you'll see how severe my migraines have been over the years.  Thankfully it is entirely possible to have that level of pain and stroke-like symptoms and it still 'just' be a migraine, even though I too have had my days (especially when the ice-pick headaches started) where I am constantly thinking "how can this not be something life-threatening when it is this painful?"

Our bodies are weird and wonderful, no part more so than our brains!

So try and genuinely relax and see if that helps.  But if your headache returns, do seek help.  Just because it isn't cancer doesn't prevent it infringing on your ability to live your life, your doctor may be able to find a way to help you.  It may also help to talk to a migraine charity to see if having more information about migraines and tension headaches helps you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi I’m just wondering if you got to the bottom of this as I’ve been suffering the same stuff for 7 months!!

  • Hi i had the same issues i went to the opticiand and was told i had glycoma. Which is not much fun but better than worrying about a brain tumour.

    Good luck.

  • I'm hoping that no news is good news and it has turned out to be some form of severe headache (not that that's 'good' mind you).

  • I was hoping if someone can help me for the past few months I've been having this weird sensation in my head like tight burning. Now it's gotten worse it's always there it's like ache in my head constantly I can't sleep tidy I found a hard lump on the back of my head I've been to my doctors loads of times and she just said it's anxiety but I don't think having anxiety would cause me to have this feeling constantly that doesn't go away I've been having pains in my ears and feeling dizzy I can't get out of bed some days I've been feeling nauseous and sick and my eye sight has gone blurry and sometimes I get numbness I don't know what to do. I've tried going back to my doctors but they just said it's anxiety

  • exactly what I am feeling! I am definitely sure the burning at the back of my head isn't axienty..
