Heterogeneous renal mass

I received a letter today from my urologist which he sent to my local hospital for an urgent ct scan.

Ill just pick the bits out...

58x59x57mm heterogeneous renal mass

CT thorax, abdominal, pelvis with contrast

Fully stage this gentleman

Correct me if I'm wrong but does this mean I have cancer and it just needs staging? Or are they yet to determine if I have cancer?

All I was told was that I have a kidney cyst not a mass!

I'm a 46 year old male and this has been found in my left kidney after an ultrasound for resistant BP.

If anyone has had a similar experience?

  • Hi Ishyde

Based on my experience, Ultrasound is not enough to determine whether a renal mass is cancerous or not, though i read somewhere that there is this Ultra-sound protocol that could differentiate malignancy vs benignity by considering some specific (quite technical) guidelines.

Benign renal mass, like angiomyolipomas, would also look heterogenous on ultra sound considering they are compose of different tissues (fats, muscles, and blood vessels). I read that if a renal mass is primarily compose of fats then it is more  likely to be an angiomyolipoma than a Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) though there are exceptions.

I had an impression that your urologist is still not sure yet whether your renal mass is malignant or not, hence the reason for a contrast CT-Scan... And since youre getting a CT-Scan anyway he might as well consider giving you a thorough one just so you can have it all in one go.

  • My heads in a place but you're spot on. I think I just need to calm down a little

  • Hello Ishyde71,

While I know that this is worrying this result cannot tell you that you have cancer but it will require further investigation.  The CT scan will give more information so hold tight and try and focus on this and do your best not to google your report as it cannot tell you about your individual situation and may give you unnecessary concern.

You would be welcome to contact the cancer information nurse team, our Freephone number is 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

Ihope you find out more about your situation soon.

    Take care

    Caroline.

  • Hi Ishyde71,

while I cannot offer insight I will offer support. I too am concerned about renal cancer. I went for an MRI of pelvis and sacrum for tailbone pain for well over a year. Side note and dismissed was left side rib pain. I had seen 3 doctors for that and had an abdominal ultrasound 3 months ago with no callback or f/u by drs. MRI done march 22 showed 1.5 cm cyst on upper pole of left kidney, and a 1.7 cm cystic area in the left kidney. It also said bilateral renal cysts were visualized.  The dr seeing me for the tailbone pain had me go for an ultrasound the next day ( just this past thursday). Holy it was painful! My first was not at all, but this one made me cry. It's now 2 days later and I'm still hurting throughout my left side. The tech kept asking if I was sure I had no blood in my urine(not that I can see?). Given the pain for the past months, the extreme pain after the u/s and her concern over blood in my urine I am quite concerned as well.

Herea hoping we both get news, and good news, soon. The waiting is so hard.

  • Hi hope you have answers and everything is OK... I currently in a same situation. I'm 33 years old went for a ultra sound scan on my kidneys as I've been in pain and had loads of kidney infections. I had my scan done on Friday night and by Monday morning my doctor rang and informed me they have found a 19mm hypoechoic mass in the mid pole of my left kidney. I'm currently waiting for my urgent urology appointment on Fri but am worried as I have no clue what this is.
