Been referred to Breast Clinic and freaking out...

Hi all,

I'm sure there are lots of messages like this one, but I thought I'd post a message anyway as it seems like a good place to vent my worry without unnecessarily alarming other people in my life!

I went to see my GP yesterday as my right breast has been feeling a bit tender lately. My breasts are quite naturally lumpy but recently it's felt like there is an area of my breast which is more solid than the rest. I don't know why, but I kind of expected the GP to say it was nothing and for me to carry on with the rest of my day as usual. Instead as soon as I mentioned slight pain in my right breast her general demeanour went from bright and breezy to serious and concerned. She asked me if I had any family history of breast cancer, and I told her my grandmother had it (she passed away from breast and lung cancer aged 68). I also remembered after my appointment that my mother's cousin had it, although my mum and aunt are fine (at least so far). She examined my breast, and although I hadn't actually mentioned finding any lumps she immediately found the place that I had identified myself. She said she wasn't sure if it was a lump, or just a nodule as my breasts are quite nodular, but she would refer me to a breast clinic for screening. She would recommend all available tests. She said she thought they would want to see me "very quickly". So as you can imagine I left the GP surgery alarmed. I also got a call from the hospital the same day (yesterday) to arrange an appointment - which also alarmed me as I figured they had prioritised me because they suspected it was cancer.

The appointment is for a week on monday. I'm not sure if I can wait that long because psychologically I'm already finding it very tough.

This year is a very big one for me as I'm getting married in three months. The wedding is abroad, everything's already organised, many people have booked their flights and accommodation. Me and my fiance are planning our life together. I can't imagine everything being disrupted by a breast cancer diagnosis.

More than that, I can't imagine trying to face breast cancer if that is the diagnosis. The GP said I should try not to worry, and that most cases are benign, but I am upset that I was referred so quickly.

I tried to talk to my Mum about it, especially as my stepdad is a retired doctor, but both of them immediately dismissed it by saying if I have any pain the likelihood is that it's not anything serious. My boyfriend is being very understanding, and saying that if it's serious we can postpone the wedding, we'll do whatever it takes. But I already have a lot going on in my life and I'm struggling to imagine the possibility, however unlikely, of taking breast cancer on as well.

How do people cope with this? I don't want to mention it to friends as I don't have a diagnosis of anything yet. But at the same time I find it hard to socialise etc as normal with this dread hanging over me.

  • Hi All,

I've been to my GP today having found a lump and wondered if anyone had been referred during lockdown and how quickly you were seen?

I'm trying to stay calm but obviously very worried.

This thread has been so helpful to understand the next steps!

  • Hi. I spoke to my dr about breast problems over the phone. She said i could go to the surgery for an examination or i could be referred straight to the breast clinic. I was seen 2 weeks later so not too much waiting. Phone the clinic if you don't get your appointment soon, thats what i ended up doing. And this has been during lockdown too

    Hi Fickleflame,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear that you are worried about your referral to the clinic. Can I ask whereabouts your lump is? There is a 2 week time frame to be seen at the majority of cancer clinics. At present , with the current pandemic, it is taking slightly longer in some parts of the country, but most are still sticking to the 2 week time frame.

You will naturally be worried, but please remember that a far greater number of those referred turn out to be free of cancer than turn out to have it. I sincerely hope that you get seen soon and, that nothing untoward shows up.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi everyone first time posting so not really sure what I'm doing! I've just been to the doctors and have been referred to the breast clinic. I have a lump in my armpit that is what seems a giant lymph node. They said they usually wait but as my mum died of breast cancer they want me seen ASAP. I'm now terrified

    Hi Kelbelash,

Welcome to our forum. I am glad to hear that you have been referred to the breast clinic. This is a scary time, as there are so many 'unknowns' surrounding you at present. Given your family history, you are just as well to get any abnormality checked out.  I also lost my mum to breast cancer and I have now had 2 bouts myself in the past 11 years, so I have some idea of how you are feeling.

If there is the slightest suspicion of a cancer diagnosis, your care team don't hang about. You will normally get your referral in and be seen within 2 weeks from the date of referral. Don't let this upset you, as this is normal.

Only 1 person in 8  who is referred to the breast clinic will get a positive diagnosis, so you still stand a good chance of a benign diagnosis.

Do please let us know when you get your appointment through and, I hope that it all goes well for you.  We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you . I know they are doing it for the right reasons and I am grateful just scared!  Just go to wait for the letter now x

  •

    Hi Kellybelash,

This is probably one of the worst times of anyone's cancer journey. Try to keep yourself busy while you are waiting. This doesn't all have to be work, do involve yourself with more pleasurable pursuits too.

Are you expecting to get your test results on the day, because this doesn't usually happen. It normally takes 1-2 weeks to get these results, so you still have some waiting to do.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I went to my appointment today I saw the consultant he said it was movable and smooth which is good but sent me for a mammogram and ultrasound on the lump. The mammogram was clear on both breasts which is good. The ultrasound on the lump was inconclusive as the position it is in made it hard for the lady to get a clear picture. I had to have a biopsy of the lump as it wasn't clear if it's a cyst attached to muscle or if it's a mass in the breast tissue of my armpit. I have a telephone appointment next Thursday for the results as they are trying to keep people out of the hospital.

    Hi Kelbelash,

I am glad to hear that you saw the consultant today and have had some tests. I am glad to hear that you are getting the results of thesetests so soon.

Please let us know how you get on then.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Gemma

I had my very first appointment on Wednesday. I first went in to see the consultant who checked both breasts and then felt the lump in my armpit.  He said he would send me for a mammogram next to check the breasts as I had never had one before. There was a bit of waiting around between things and I sat with a gown on so if it's the same bring something to keep you warm too.

I didn't find the mammogram painful it was just a bit uncomfortable where my armpit swelling was.

After this I waited for a ultrasound on the lump so went back into the waiting room in the gown.

The ultrasound didn't hurt at all but they had to take a biopsy of the lump. This was a bit uncomfortable but I wouldn't say painful. I'm a bit bruised now but it's in a funny place in my armpit so keep squashing it.

I then went back out into the waiting room to wait to see the consultant again. He explained I would get my results in a week at a phone appointment. He said it would be three scenarios. I'd either be all clear, have to come in again for more samples but not to worry if that happened as it dose not mean the worst or 3 they have found something abnormal.

Hope this all helps. It may be different I suppose depending of different hospitals. Hope your appointment goes well.

  • thankyou for replying x did u take anyone with you i was taking my daughter as no one to watch her but seems like a lot of waiting about x

  • I wasn't allowed to take anyone because of covid. My mother in law waited in the car park for me. I was in the hospital from 3pm until  5:30 but you may not need all the tests I did so could be a lot quicker. X

  • lovely thankyou for your help X

  •

    Hi Gemmaauk,

It is normal for your first appointment at the breast clinic to take 2 or 3 hours, by the time you've had all the necessary tests. It might be worth phoning the hospital, as some clinics seem to allow one person to accompany you, whilst others don't allow anyone.

I hope that all goes well for your visit and, that nothing untoward is found.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • been for my appointment today they found density 35mm right breast had biopsy of breast and arm pit they said it looks suspicious cant help but think the worst made me feel sick x

  • Try not to worry. I know it's hard I keep saying it over and over to myself. This waiting bit seems the worst and I keep going over and over what they said.

My biopsy site in my armpit is still sore too which is not helping x

  • i know im trying so hard not to im

hoping its where i had the mastitis as thats same boob x the doctor couldnt feel any lumps its showed up on mammogram x did you have a lump x

  • what did they say to you i saw her marks down u5 (malignant) but how do they know if no biopsy result yet x

  • Hi,

My lump is in my armpit in migrating breast tissue. I have just received a letter which they have also sent to my doctor. It's not results but it says the lump is 18mm.

It states the mammogram was normal on both breasts  I though my lump was a lymph node but its not.

I think they can only guess until the results come back. I have seen someone post like you on another thread I will see if I can find it. They had all the same symptoms as you and the doctor said high chance of cancer but it turned out to be benign.
