would a doctor say you have cancer before biopsy results ?

Hi there

My Mum is currently in hospital. She has been there for two weeks. She has blood clots on both lungs and pain in her stomach, enlarged Lymph nodes in lungs and stomach. They did an Endoscopy on her stomach a week ago and tissue was taken for biopsy. They said the biopsy results would be back in two weeks time. Two days after the endoscopy, two doctors have told my Mum they 'think' she has either Lymphatic cancer or stomach cancer. How can they say this to someone without biopsy results ? Has anybody else had this happen to them ? She is going for a PET scan next tuesday.

Thanks for any advice

  • Thank you for that. I'm grateful to find all of you as a place to put my fears and be understood.

I trust the diagnosis, but I'm torn between being glad I'm in the system and things can happen quickly and being terrified that they put me in the system because they suspect that everthing is so awful that things have to happen quickly.

I'll kep you posted, and Jolamine, you are an inspiration.

    Xx

    Hi Onemorething,

Thank you for your kind comments.

You will find this a great place for support, as we have all been where you are and know just how worrying it is. Having family anf friends assuring you that all will be fine is really no help at this stage. The fear of the unknown takes over and our imaginations go into overdrive. Don't worry about how quickly everything is happening. This is perfectly normal and, you'll find that it's quite long enough to wait for a diagnosis.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and look forward to hearing how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Kitty,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why you're here. Who has instigated these tests - is it your GP or a hospital doctor? If it is just your GP, I would expect that you will be referred to a cancer Consultant for further treatment. I am not a doctor, so cannot answer your question about a biopsy. There may not be a need if they have already diagnosed lung cancer, but I would expect them to do this in order to get the grade of your cancer.

Have you asked your doctor where you go from here and what your next steps should be? Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Yes, my husband had laprascopic surgery for achalasia and when the put the probes in they saw a large mass covering half of his liver.  they aborted the surgery, took biopsy of liver and stomach and when they came to see my husband after the surgery they said sorry but its cancer.  i was under the same impression that you were - how could they know right?  We have an appointment on monday to discuss results its been three weeks of waiting for biopsy and scans.  I am very confused too - i dont know what to expect on monday
