would a doctor say you have cancer before biopsy results ?

Hi there

My Mum is currently in hospital. She has been there for two weeks. She has blood clots on both lungs and pain in her stomach, enlarged Lymph nodes in lungs and stomach. They did an Endoscopy on her stomach a week ago and tissue was taken for biopsy. They said the biopsy results would be back in two weeks time. Two days after the endoscopy, two doctors have told my Mum they 'think' she has either Lymphatic cancer or stomach cancer. How can they say this to someone without biopsy results ? Has anybody else had this happen to them ? She is going for a PET scan next tuesday.

Thanks for any advice

    HI Quickfire,

A very warm welcome to our forum. In most hospitals the MDT is a weekly meeting of all your care team. They discuss your test results and any proposed treatment plan or further tests that may be needed. You usually hear the results and the outcome of their meeting within 1-2 weeks, but it can take a little longer in some parts of the country.

I am so sorry to hear that your Mum's cancer is inoperable, but am sure that it won't be overlooked at the MDT meeting and, the time taken to get back to her won't compromise any future treatment.

I hope that she hears soon and that you can give her the support she needs at this difficult time. Please keep in touch and let us know when they tell you. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • My husband was told he had Terminal Cancer in his Kidney and lungs and a week later they also told us it was in his spine and ribs following a scan. Several days later the Biopsy came back and we have been told it is Inconclusive and he now needs another Biospy in his lungs ( Kidneys were done first time around). They are now telling us he may not have Cancer at all. We have already had almost 3 weeks of hell. Waiting for the second Biopsy still, with probably another 10 days or so wait for the result. I dont know how they can tell you you have Terminal Cancer, and then go back on themselves. We are absolutely beside ourselves, and still dont know what we are facing.

    Hi Squirtypie,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why you've joined us. It can sometimes be difficult to diagnose certain cancers and other conditions can mimic cancer symptoms at times. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years. Although I have been unfortunate to get a cancer diagnosis on both occasions, my consultant was almost certain that I had it one another 4 occasions and told me this each time at my first appointment.

It certainly does make the waiting terrifying when this happens, But I felt so blessed on those 4 occasions to get a clear biopsy result. I sincerely hope that this latest suggestion is the correct one for your husband and that it won't turn out to be cancer in the end.

Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I was told that , I've got cancer in the tongue ,we awaited for the results with a bio  and it said that I didn't have cancer so the consultant  ,never said anything

v got to wait for another 6wks to c what they r going  to do  never apologised or said sorry I'm been worry sick for that sixs wks

So I'll have to wait and c what he is saying

    Hi Greenaway,

A very warm welcome to our forum. You have had a worrying wait for your biopsy results, having already been told that it was probable that you had cancer. I have been in this position with breast cancer and know just how anxious my wait was. I have done it 3 times. On 1 occaasion I was fortunate enough to get a benign result, but on 2 others I wasn't so fortunate.

Your consultant can suspect a cancer diagnosis, but cannot confirm that it is a certainty until your biopsy results come back. I know which of the results I'd prefer, so it sounds as if you have been lucky. Do please let us know how you get on when you see your consultant again. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Same happened to me yesterday I had. Mammogram seen consultant before screening or biopsy and she said I had cancer I don’t have lumps just breast pain

    Hi Katyboo,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are in the same boat. This is always a worry, but the sooner you catch it, the better the treatment options are.

Thinking of you and, hope that you get your results soon.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • My best friend has terminal cancer and when she was diagnosed each technician after several scans said she'd get the results in 2 weeks which tbh i think is just their standard reply. She got calls from the hospital the same day or the next day saying they were sure it was cancer so yes - i think they can be pretty sure.

However my mother in law was told on the phone she had ovarian cancer. She did but it wasn't classic ovarian cancer - she had carcinoid syndrome affecting her ovary so the diagnosis was kind of right but didn't turn out to be quite what they thought x

  • Everyone here seems so nice and supportive, a lovely club that I wish I didn't  have to  join.

Does anyone have a sense of whether the diagnosis will be worse if the radiologist says it's  cancer before the biopsy comes back?

Went to breast clinic for what everyone   including first Dr at the clinic thought was a cyst. Mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy with marker put in and another Mammogram....by the end of the day they were confident it is cancer and gave me a date to discuss treatment plan when biopsies come back in two weeks.

I'm wrapping my head around the fact that it is cancer, but I can't help panicking that it's a worst case scenario if they were so confident so fast.

Anyone have this experience? Just hearing other voices is so much better than freaking out on my own.

    Best possible wishes to all.

    Hi Onemorething,

A very warm welcome to the club that nobody really wants to join.

I am so sorry to hear about what you radiologist has told you and how it has triggered your anxiety.    If it's of any consolation, the majority of us tend to think the worst while we are waiting for a result. However, this seldom comes to pass. I have been told by my consultant on three occasions that he was pretty sure that I had breast cancer on my first appointment. He turned out to be correct on 2 occasion, but one was a benign lump.

The staff that work in this field are pretty accurate 90% of the time, but occassionally, they can be proven wrong once the biopsy result comes back. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 12 years, but I still lead a busy and fulfilled life. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer nowadays.

I am glad to hear that you already have a date to return for your results and hope that all turns out to be considerably better than you are contemplating. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
