would a doctor say you have cancer before biopsy results ?

Hi there

My Mum is currently in hospital. She has been there for two weeks. She has blood clots on both lungs and pain in her stomach, enlarged Lymph nodes in lungs and stomach. They did an Endoscopy on her stomach a week ago and tissue was taken for biopsy. They said the biopsy results would be back in two weeks time. Two days after the endoscopy, two doctors have told my Mum they 'think' she has either Lymphatic cancer or stomach cancer. How can they say this to someone without biopsy results ? Has anybody else had this happen to them ? She is going for a PET scan next tuesday.

Thanks for any advice

    HI Blhope,

Doctors are working with cancer day in day out and have a fair idea of what is and isn't cancerous from the beginning. I was told by my consultant on my first visit that it was most likely to be cancer, but I still had to wait for the results of my biopsy to confirm this. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer, 9 and 10 years ago. I had the same experience on both occasions.

This will be a worrying week for you until you get your results back, but I hope that your results are not as dire as you're expecting.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I i Jolamine,

  • Hi my doctor didn't have any idea what was wrong with me so sent me to specialist who sent me for alot of blood tests when results came back he told me it looks like cancer but will send for scans and biopsy, scans confirmed cancer but I still had biopsies even though no nead really,, most specialist know what to look for, in blood or scans, but it doesn't heart to make sure,, that was over three years ago I'm non curable but it's manageable, I'm still fighting,

  • Hello, am sorry to hear its not cureable. I had my results today and i have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, luckily it hasn't affected the lymph nodes and will start chemotherapy. Wishing you all the best.

  • Hi Jolamine

    Hi Millie,

I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Did they say when you would be starting chemo and, how may sessions you will have?

I saw the plastic surgeon yesterday and he was happy with my biopsy wounds. You can hardly see the one on my face, but the one on my leg is quite obvious. He told me that this will take up to a year to heal completely. Still, he was happy enough that there is no further cancer present.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, thank you. I need to have a CT scan waiting for that to come through, see the oncologist to discuss the treatment demanding on one of the biopsy result that was still outstanding when i went on Wednesday, more waiting though my consultant said it'll be mid August. What type of cancer do you have if you don't mind me? Am pleased to hear your healing well, your body needs to recover slowly.

    Send positivity.

    Millie

  • Hi Millie,

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years. I have also had 3 suspected melanoma, which all fortunately turned out to be benign.

I am sorry that you are having this extra wait, but you are best to know exactly what you are dealing with before you commence treatment..

I hope that your CT appointment comes through soon and that you don't have too long to wait for your outstanding biopsy results.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I was told that , I've got cancer in the tongue ,we awaited for the results with a bio  and it said that I didn't have cancer so the consultant  ,never said anything

    Hi Greenaway,

A very warm welcome to our forum. You have had a worrying wait for your biopsy results, having already been told that it was probable that you had cancer. I have been in this position with breast cancer and know just how anxious my wait was. I have done it 3 times. On 1 occaasion I was fortunate enough to get a benign result, but on 2 others I wasn't so fortunate.

Your consultant can suspect a cancer diagnosis, but cannot confirm that it is a certainty until your biopsy results come back. I know which of the results I'd prefer, so it sounds as if you have been lucky. Do please let us know how you get on when you see your consultant again. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
