Does an MDT meeting mean there is reason to worry?

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum, I am hoping to be able to talk to some people and perhaps gain a bit of insight to what is going on.

I am 26, and about 6 weeks ago had a suspicious mole removed from my upper back. This of course was sent of for biopsy. At this point I was not really worried.

Today, I finally get a bit more information from the consultants secetary in that the results have come back, however before I can be told anymore they need to have an MDT meeting. I looked into what an MDT meeting is, and searches primarily include "cancer patients".

Does this mean they have found something, or is this standard practise for all mole removals?

Thanks

  • Dear Leebee1709

I have never posted on anything like this before, but I just came across your question about MDT meeting(s) as I have been waiting for results for over 6 weeks- having chased I found out today my doctors were going into an MDT meeting. I don’t know what that means, but like you,  I have searched, and everything online suggests something sinister. Can you give me any light to this? I know your post was a few months ago but I hoped you might be able to help? I hope you are very well xx

  • Hi Alice,

Waiting for results is about the worst part of this experience. My reply to LeeBee covers what MDTs are. There's nothing sinister about them in themselves.

Most hospitals have multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) made up of various doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who all specialise in different therapies and conditions. They work as a team and at an MDT meeting cases (including the results of scans and diagnostic tests) are discussed and allocated to the most appropriate members of the team.

Cases discussed by the team often range from those where nothing untoward has been found, in which case it is agreed who gets to tell the patient the good news, through to giving the patient a diagnosis and discussing treatment options with them. In my personal life I have had both extremes as a result of an MDT meeting.

    Best wishes
    Dave

  • Hi dave , sorry texting on someone's post but just wanted to say , you gave me some advice a while ago about my oldest son ... your words stayed with me , and yesterday I did put your advice into action ... I'll be forever grateful and just wanted you to know your words can really change people's life's x chrisie

  • Hi Dave, sorry to reply to you personally but you seem to know how the system works!

I recently had a biopsy and they've found CIN, haven't said what letter just that they'll be in touch after they have an MDT. How often do they normally hold these meetings and do you know roughly how long it then takes them to get back in touch? I've had MDTs due to being super high risk in pregnancy as well as other problems leading up to my reason for having the biopsy and I'm quite worried!

    Thank you in advance!

  • Hi AnonF,

I'm sure you won't be surprised if I answer "it depends"! Weekly seems normal but I don't think there's any fixed period.
Someone who definitely should know for certain is either your named nurse specialist or, if you don't have one, your Consultant's medical secretary. This second under appreciated group of people have the role of managing one or more Consultant's diaries. If you ring the hospital switchboard and ask for Dr (insert name)'s medical secretary, you should get straight through. Just say you have a few questions that are stressing you out that she/he may be able to help with.
Over the years, I've asked both the named specialist nurse and the med secs all sorts of questions by phone both about my own and my wife's treatment plans (she had a massive brain haemorrhage in the same year I was diagnosed with Cancer but we both recovered against all expectations). If they've not been able to answer, they've signposted me to someone who can.

I hope you get all the answers you need.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hello davak

Hoping you can help put my mind at rest a little..I had some uterine polyps removed 5 weeks ago and they were sent off for biopsy...the womb biopsy I had before they removed the polyps came back as normal a couple of weeks after the biopsy, however I'm still waiting for the results of the polyps biopsies. I have spoken to the consultants secretary last week and she said results were back and with consultant for signature and "plan" which got me worried as why would a plan be needed if the results were clear? She rang me today after I emailed her to say consultant is in holiday but my results haven't been discussed by the MDT yet.

That has really freaked me out because all Google results for MDT scream cancer.  The secretary said all results are discussed but I think she is just saying that so I don't worry (pointless as my anxiety is through the roof), why are these results taking so long when all previous results have been sent to me within 3 weeks?

  • Hi MrsAA

i was just wondering if you had heard back regarding the MDT meeting? My son is being discussed in an MDT today after blood tests and I’m going out of my mind thinking what does this mean

  • Hi, yes I have…precancerous cells were found in a polyp and the end result for me is hysterectomy which I was going to ask for even if the results were normal..they offered me a cancellation for yesterday which I accepted but my blood sugars were too high so I was sent home again, with a view to it being done in September after a couple of already booked holidays…in the meantime they are giving me a coil although consultant seems to think that the cells were all contained in the polyp.

So it’s not always bad news, although admittedly it could have been a bit better for me..I did email the consultants secretary the day after the MDT and she got a nurse to ring me, I wasn’t expecting her to give me the results over the phone but I was very grateful that she did.

I hope you get your son’s results soon and that all is ok.  Please let me know x
