Ovarian cyst found, what's next?

Hi, I am a 39 year old lady. I went to the hospital last week after having lower abdominal pain for 2 weeks following a colposcopy for a borderline smear test and a dodgy looking cervix. Doctors kept insisting nothing could be seriously wrong as bloods and urine samples and temperature were all fine. On my 3 rd visit, they agreed to do an ultrasound scan. The sonographer told me she could see no reason for pain in my abdomon. She asked me wait in the waiting area and disappeared. When she came back, she recalled me into room and said she needed to look at the rest of my abdomen, and checked my other organs. I then went with the scan results to see the gynaecologist who told me I have a cystic area on my left ovary (sonographer couldn't find my right ovary??) when I have had cysts in past they have done nothing and said they will go away on their own, they are nothing to worry about. They didn't do that this time!! The gynaecologist went with my file to speak to a consultant, and came back and said we needed to do tumour marker blood tests and I needed to go to my gp urgently with the referral letter and be referred urgently to a specialist gynaecologist. I am seriously worried as cancer is in my family and need to know what will happen next. Can anyone help?

  • Hi everyone, I know this post has been open for a long time- thanks everyone for being so open with what's going on. I really would like to know some outcomes that people have had. I realise that people post when they are at the stage I'm at now and just waiting to see what going to happen!!

I am 45 and so far have no signs of the menopause. I have been having a bit of pain after sex and some very mild spotting between periods. My periods are still very regular. I have a copper coil fitted. The spotting started playing in my mind so I went to the docs. They referred me for an ultra sound and I have just been to the docs for the results.

They found a cyst 5x5x7 (I am assuming cm) they couldn't find my overies, either of them, in the normal way- I think he meant they were obstructed by the cyst. They also found fluid in the uterus. They also used the term thick cystic wall. I am now going to have the c125 blood test and I have been fast tracked to gynaecologist, so I will be seen in 2 weeks.
the doctor said we are worried it might be something sinister- which obviously freaked me out!!
would love to here if how things worked out for others- the next 2 weeks are going to be so stressful!!!

    thanks!

  • Hey my advice would be try not to worry and don't become doctor google as that will worry you more. I went through hell with mine as I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer but luckily to cut a long story short after my op I had endometriosis. So I had to have my ovaries removed. I had all the c125 and it was all dome as my levels were going up so I can understand your worry honestly don't worry your surgeon will talk you through everything and my doctor was great with me advising me what to do etc. Be strong you will get sorted just keep asking questions if your not sure on things and keep on at your doctor if things dont get sorted. Im a year and half now post op.

  • Thanks for replying. Sorry you went through such a terrible time but encouraging that you are now a year and a half post op! Take care! I'm trying to stay positive!

  • Hello,

I just wanted to add my recent experience here in case it can help anyone else as reading other people's stories really helped me when I was in the worrying and waiting stage. I am 37 and have no children.

I went to my GP in June with abdominal discomfort, bloating and constipation. Looking back my abdomen was harder than it should have been but I think it had happened so gradually I hadn't noticed. The GP initially thought IBS when discussing over the phone, but thankfully invited me for a physical examination. She identified a 'large mass' in my abdomen and after a negative pregnancy test seemed very worried. She did full bloods and manually examined my cervix as well. She made a gynae referral as best guess as to location of the mass.

I was lucky to get an internal ultrasound within a few days. The sonographer confirmed the mass on my right ovary, she said the consultant would want an urgent MRI based on what she had seen. I saw the consultant a couple of days later who said the US showed a complex cyst so he would order tumour markers, CA125 and a couple of others and MRI. At the this point the cyst measured at 24cmx23cmx10cm. I had to wait a couple of weeks for the MRI, and another 3 weeks for the results. The tumour markers were normal and the MRI showed a complex cyst but according to the doctor didn't look 'sinister'. Due to the size it required removal by open surgery, and in tact in case there were any abnormal cells. It also needed removal of the ovary and fallopian tube but they would preserve everything else due to my age.

Luckily I only had to wait 5 weeks from MRI results for the surgery which I had at the end of Sept. All went smoothly and I am recovering well at 6 weeks post op now, it was nowhere near as bad as I thought. Histology showed it was a borderline ovarian tumour which means they want to keep an eye on the other ovary in case it returns. I have been advised if I want to start a family to get on with it as treatment for any return would be hysterectomy.

The whole experience has been incredibly worrying, and I was driving myself crazy reading into what docs did or didn't say, whether I had heard news and what that might mean, panicking every time the phone rang. For the first time in these months I feel like I can focus on the future and relax again.

So anyone else in the same boat you are not alone, and try not to worry until you know what you are dealing with. One day at a time!

  • Hiya.
I'm so glad that you got a quick (ish) diagnosis & surgery! I hope you're all healed now?
I was diagnosed in pretty much the same way - my doctor diagnosed IBS. After a few more weeks of nausea, bloating, constant urination etc, the doctor said she'd send me for a scan ON MY GALLBLADDER My songographer found my 8cm simple cyst on the off chance. He named it 'big nasty'. He was great, had good banter.
This was on my husbands 37th birthday, back in June. I had to go back to his parents house, where the whole family were waiting on me so we could start the bbq .... I was mortified.
My doctor made an appointment for my CA125's the following Monday (2 days after the scan). The results were 20 ... so within normal levels.
I'm down in the South West of Devon, so waiting times may be different, but; I was seen by the gynaecology 4 weeks later and then had surgery booked in for the 29th Sept - 3mths after diagnosis.
I actually had surgery postponed until the 3rd Nov as my eldest son tested positive for covid two days before my surgery - always the best timing with teenagers

Anyway - it's now 19 days recovery. I'm yet to hear anything about my biopsy. My pre op pregnancy test results were only added onto my file 3 days ago - so I'm assuming there is a backlog with the admin side.

Here's hoping they come back unremarkable.
Love to everyone that reads my ramblings ️

  • Hi I hope you have recovered well. From looking at the date you sent this message I'm guessing you are 29 years old now. I am a 46 year old woman who had my first cyst at the age of  24. The doctor found a cyst on my left ovary the size of an orange and urgently referred me to have it removed. They could not tell me at the time what the mass was and I was put in a ward with women who had been told they had got cancer, so when I woke and I was told it was full of blood and that I had endometriosis I just felt lucky it was not cancer. A year later I had an emergency op to have part of my bowel removed as it had twisted which they said was due to the endometriosis. Since then I have had 3 beautiful children ♥️ I went for an ultrasound scan just the other day and today I found out out that they have found a small cyst on my left ovary, same ovary again, I have got to wait 6 to 10 weeks to have another scan, I had this info sent by message saying 'it's just protocol' I think I shall be phoning them up to get a bit more information about it. It doesn't matter how use to having procedures done or how many times you've had an operation, it's still a worry, I'm only human and have 3 children who depend on me. I do hope that life has taken a good turn for you and that you got your degree and hopefully if not yet then soon will find a person who lights up your world on the difficult day.

  • Hello

I've just been reading all these posts and it's helped me with my ongoing situation. I've been having weird abdominal aches/pains  since end of July which originally started as a urine infection. Had bloods, stool, urine all came back clear apart from the urine keeps coming back contaminated for some reason. Next appointment is a scan in 3 weeks so fingers crossed all goes well with that. Just drive yourself crazy don't you with worry and like everyone says you shouldn't google but everyone always does as you want to find out what's wrong. Anyway hopefully someone will reply with similar symptoms and we can help each other.

    thanks

    Rachel
