Ovarian cyst found, what's next?

Hi, I am a 39 year old lady. I went to the hospital last week after having lower abdominal pain for 2 weeks following a colposcopy for a borderline smear test and a dodgy looking cervix. Doctors kept insisting nothing could be seriously wrong as bloods and urine samples and temperature were all fine. On my 3 rd visit, they agreed to do an ultrasound scan. The sonographer told me she could see no reason for pain in my abdomon. She asked me wait in the waiting area and disappeared. When she came back, she recalled me into room and said she needed to look at the rest of my abdomen, and checked my other organs. I then went with the scan results to see the gynaecologist who told me I have a cystic area on my left ovary (sonographer couldn't find my right ovary??) when I have had cysts in past they have done nothing and said they will go away on their own, they are nothing to worry about. They didn't do that this time!! The gynaecologist went with my file to speak to a consultant, and came back and said we needed to do tumour marker blood tests and I needed to go to my gp urgently with the referral letter and be referred urgently to a specialist gynaecologist. I am seriously worried as cancer is in my family and need to know what will happen next. Can anyone help?

Sue

  • Although I can’t guarantee it, I’d say that it’s a normal cyst.  I have just had abnormal cysts detected, had bloods done and CT scan and it came back as not cancer.  I also empathise as the waiting is the hardest part.  Stay positive.

  • Thanks for the reply hun. He didn't seem that worried after doing the ultrasound, he just said it's 20cm full of fluid an that he would send it of to a gynocologyst for them to have their 2pence worth (His words) an that I should just wait to hear back from them. I just hate the waiting because I panick so much with stuff like this an I'm scared in case it ruptures xx

  • Which blood test did you have? Do you know if it was a CA-125? If this comes back low you should have nothing to worry about. 20cm is giant though and like you say there is a chance of rupturing (I just had a 12cm ovarian cyst removed) so I would say the sooner you have it removed the better. You may also experience episodic pain until it gets removed so perhaps ask for strong pain relief to use as and when required to manage the pain. I am awaiting the biopsy results but my CA-125 results were only slightly raised and they think it is just a benign dermoid cyst so finger’s crossed that is all it is. The waiting game is awful - I really do understand. Hope you find some comfort in knowing there are lots of us out there going through similar journeys. Take care xx

  • Hi I've been diagnosed with a cysts after going for a ultra sound I was refereed by my doctor due to having heavy periods for years.

The ultra sound picked up several cysts and one on my left overie that didn't look right so the ultra sound lady referred me to the gynaecologist. I went to see him thinking nothing was wrong and he said I had a mass that   Didn't look right he said he wasn't concerned at this time but  gave me a option of waiting too see if the cyst grows or having a full hysterectomy as I'm 49.. I was in complete shock everything he was telling me was not going in I had  bloods done at the doctors c125 which came back at 76 which I thought was high at the time he said until he removes it he couldn't tell me what mass tumour it was.

i opted to wait 3 months to see if it had grown went for a scan last week it's grown and my bloods c125 have gone up to 106 now I've gone in to complete melt down I've googled everything on overian cysts to overian cancer which is exactly the same  symptoms I'm at my wits end with worry that the cyst is cancer I have a gynaecologist appointment in 2 weeks 4 November I'm petrified the waiting is just too much I just want to get it sorted.

I've had no symptoms until my last scan a week ago I'm having nigaly pain in my left side I'm just thinking the worst the days just seem like weeks. I know the gynaecologist is going to say remove everything hysterectomy I'm thinking the worst!!

I feel for everyone on here and feel your worries and dispair at this worrying time I know we have too keep positive but it's hard.....

  • Hi ladies,

This thread has really reassured me. I've been googling the hell out of everything from cysts to ovarian cancer.

I notice people say that they suffered with heavy periods. has anyone experienced the opposite? I haven't had a period for 5 months. I'm on the contraceptive pill and usually as regular as clock work.
I started getting symptoms alongside the elusive periods and my gut is something is just not quite right with me but can't put my finger on what it is.

I went to see my GP who has been brilliant. I had bloods run for pretty much everything and they came back clear but she trusted that I wasn't feeling myself so referred me for an ultrasound.
After the bloods came back ok I started to think maybe i was imagining it. Fast forward and I got a call on Friday just gone with my ultrasound results.
They have picked up a 5cm 'mass' with a smaller mass growing from it, on my right ovary. I have been put on the 2 week pathway/ 2 week wait or urgent referral scheme to see a specialist gynaecologist, my appointment is for the 8th Nov.

I had ca125 bloods taken yesterday, the results should be back by the end of the week.

I feel completely in limbo. I don't even know what is going to happen at the specialist appointment? Can anyone reassure me or advise what usually happens next?

I'm 24 years old (25 in a couple of weeks). My gut says whatever it is will be benign, but my biggest concern is that this is going to make it difficult or impossible for us to have children! :-(

    Thank you x

  • Hey sweets

what I'd say is don't panic easer said then done I know as I'm still waiting to see my gynaecologist.

I honestly became doctor google I panicked myself so much I wasn't sleeping and having panic attacks which I've never suffered from.

Your gynaecologist will talk through everything with you and as your really young I'm sure he will do everything he can to save your overies mine thinks I'm past that as I'm 49 lol.

Try and stay positive sending you big hugs it's definitely a worry I know and try and stay off google..

    Tar.

  • I have just found this thread and found it really reassuring. I went to the doctors about a month ago with stomach pains and constipation. They initially thought it was a urine infection which I was given antibiotics for. When they didn't work my doctor referred me for blood tests and a scan. The blood tests came back ok. I paid for a private scan as nhs waiting time was long.

The ultrasound scan found cysts on both my ovaries at least one of which is big...10-12cm and had pushed everything out of place down there. I asked if I should be worried at the ultrasound and she said not to not worry but they need more investigation... which obviously sent my mind into overdrive!

I had ca125 blood tests a week ago (which I'm too scared to ring up for the results of!!) and an urgent referral to what I thought was gynaecology tomorrow. At least I thought it was until I got a letter through that says oncology on the top of it! Praying this is just a cross over in departments!

Ive been having major panic attacks and anxiety over the last week to the point that I feel like I can't breath!

Im 32 with no kids and a fear that I now never will

just wondering if anyone can advise what to expect at my appointment tomorrow? Or offer any words of reassurance?

    thanks x

  • Hi Sue,

I went for an ultrasound 2 weeks ago and they sent the results to my gp. I have a 5 cm mass on my left ovary but I've had the ca125 blood test and my go said it was a good result (I'm assuming that means not cancer) however I'm now being sent to a consultant and for an mri scan. I'm wondering if this means they think it could be more ... it is such a worry. I'm also get dragging aches rather than pain in my side and back ache. I have had some slight bleeding but that could be the new pill that I've only been taking for two months.

I hope you have some news by now and that it's good.
    take care xx

  • Hi all,

As with other comments I'm really glad this thread has been left open.

Over 5 years ago I was having irregular periods and then they stopped completely so I was diagnosed with early menopause. I'm now 44. I've always had a bloated stomach but thought nothing of it until 6 months ago I noticed a pea sized lump down my lower back right hand side. Went to the doctors again and said it has been steadily growing but they said it was probably a muscle related problem my bloods came back with lower b12, foliate and an inflammation marker came back irregular fast forward to Wednesday night and I got an ultrasound scan and the radiologer said there was a 7cm cyst on my right ovary and the doctor will send for me to discuss but first thing on Thursday morning the doctor rang me and said it was a 11cm cyst on my right ovary and this is the lump I probably feel. I asked if I should be worried and she said with my symptoms and what they found it is worrying. I then asked if they misdiagnosed me with early menopause and they said it is a probable coincidence [weird wording].

I'm being fast tracked to gynaecology and had the ca125 blood test yesterday but this waiting is very upsetting although I'm usually a strong person but I'm in tears since yesterday.

The past three weeks my bloating has been awful and I look 6 months pregnant and can balance a cup of tea on my stomach.

It's going to be a stressful time next week.

Any advice or help would be much appreciated and thanks for all the posts on this thread again as they have helped xx

  • Hi,

Im no help, but I just want to say, stay strong. My is apparently 5cm since June and I've just got a cat scan last week on it and going to see the gny consultant in January. Maybe someone else can help or comment back to you, xx
