Complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia

Feeling a little lost in terms of where to look for help/guidelines and hoping that someone here might be able to help.

I'm 36 years old and was diagnosed with complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia following a hysteroscopy and biopsy last March. Due to my age and desire to retain the possibility of future pregnancies, my gynaecologist suggested we try hormone therapy before committing to a hysterectomy. In June this year I received an appointment with a gynaecological oncologist who stressed that hormone therapy could be a risk considering the extent of my symptoms and doubled my dosage of progestogen with strict instruction that I undergo a repeat biopsy/hysteroscopy in September.

Second biopsy/hysteroscopy happened this week and whilst I don't have results yet, I was advised post-procedure by one of the doctors present in theatre that I should prepare for the worst as things looked highly suspicious. I was also told that I was now officially an oncology patient and no longer to be treated via gynae, and that follow-up/results would happen within 6 weeks but most probably within two due to fact that I've already been diagnosed as pre-cancerous. Today I find out that I've been given a general gynae clinic appointment for nearly 8 weeks time and am now torn between preparing for a cancer diagnosis and hysterectomy or reassuring myself that perhaps the hormone therapy is having an effect.

It's been a year since I began attending appointments and tests for abnormal bleeding and I've been in increasing pain since December last year to the extent that eating and sleeping are now affected on a daily basis. Is it usual that I have another 8 weeks of waiting to find out whether it's cancer? Would really appreciate hearing from anyone that's gone through this process and can give me an idea of what's normal in terms of results and progression. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi All,

Thank you for sharing all your experiences. I have also been diagnosed with complex atypical hyperlasia two years ago. I have constantly been getting the biopsies but they keep coming back with papillary proliforation of the endometrium. I am devestated and not sure what else is out there. I have been on provera - what are your doses? I have been on 450mg daily for almost two years now and have the mirena coil in too but don't seem to help. I'm not bleeding at all but do get severe cramps and it is limiting me being able to exercise as well as lose weight. I'm struggling and really not wanting a hysterectomy but not sure what else is out there if anything at all!

Anyone had any luck getting pregnant or getting IVF? I am not even at this stage and don't have children.

So stressed and upset by this!

  • Hey poppy, I'm doing really well since my op. I was back at work after 2.5 weeks. Cleaning the house and carrying on as normal after week 1!!
I feel so much better already. I had it done keyhole and so it wasn't as invasive. I feel like a completely different person already !
no bleeding, no pain and no more medication x

  • Morning

Your recovery sounds incredible! Glad to hear some good news  And glad you are feeling a completely different person good luck for you future x

  • Hi Yazmiine,

Ive only just started reading these posts tonight as have been booked in today for a total hysterectomy. I'm sorry to hear of your journey but great to hear you have bounced back so quickly after surgery- I'm totally freaking out about it tonight but your positivity and post op post has helped.

  • Hey lovely, I'm now 8 weeks 1 day post op. I'm struggling slightly with my emotions and temper although I kept my ovaries so not sure why other than that I honestly feel like a new person. There is light at the end of the tunnel. When are you due in ? X

  • Ive been told the ovaries can stop working after hysterectomy- have they checked your hormones? Im booked in for the 28th, getting very nervous and wishing I wasnt so overweight beforehand so madly dieting, all the info Ive been given says how to lose weight and get fitter but Ive only got 19 days to do that!x

  • Not yet though I've got an apt on Monday with the dr to request a blood test - I've ordered some evening primrose tablets as they're supposed to help.
honestly I was closer to 19 stone and still got mine - since I had it done I've dropped to 17st 4 so don't put too much pressure on yourself.
I have gained a little back as I dislocated my knee so couldn't do my walking like I would usually do.

have they said how you're having yours done ? Mine was keyhole - there is a good support group on fb called hysterectomy sisters. I used that loads for support - mine was keyhole and honestly I wouldn't know I'd had it done if it weren't for the scars on my belly x

  • Good idea, Ive been taking EP for ages for breast cysts and it really does make a difference, which brand you buy is important Tesco own brand was useless for me.

Shes going to try keyhole but the uterus is quite big so Im having to agree to abdominal if she needs to. Wow well done on that weightloss in such a short time, what have you been doing? Im 15.5 at the minute, and 5ft7 so classed as obese.  Doing Exante until the op as have had really good results in the past with quick weightloss on that.

thanks, I found hystersisters too, very good site.

  • Perfect- I picked mine up from boots. Hopefully it will be good !
I found it a very easy recovery only had tenderness for a few days like I'd done a huge an workout rather than a hysterectomy.

I am only 5"5 so classed as obese 3 or some rubbish - the oncologist was vile but didn't take my pains and living on painkillers into account. I'd been walking 3 times a day in the lead up to it and got straight back to it after week one which was lovely as it helps me relieve stress.
I ended up taking so much stuff into hospital but actually only needed undies, power bank with charger, nighty and wash bag. Plus snacks for the nurses - that was a big one lol.

  • I use Horbaach from Amazon. Seems to do the trick!

Thanks for the what to take tips, there is such a long list on some sites I guess if you have abdominal surgery then the other things might be worth taking. Definately will get some snacks for the nurses! good idea.

Are you allowed to go on HRT? my Dr has said if she ends up taking out the ovaries she will have to wait till histopathology comes back before I would be allowed any.  I've been told if youve had cancer you are not allowed HRT but not sure if this is true. x
