Breast lump

Hello. I went to the breast clinic in Manchester 4 weeks ago with a lump in my right breast the size of a grape that came out of nowhere. It moves and is sore. I had a mammogram and an ultrasound and on both the lump was not visible which they were happy it wasn't anything concerning so must be breast tissue or a cyst due to hormones. I have dense breasts also. I have also had many fibroadenomas in the past. Anyway they sent me home happy with results and referred back to doctors.

This was 4 weeks ago and today I was g8ven an appointment for 2 weeks time to see the consultant I was under as on the day he was not available so I saw a girl who works under him. I've never been asked to go back after any of my other appointments I'm assuming due to all of those doing biopsies. But if the results were all clear or they were happy with them why 4 weeks later would I be asked to go back. It has made me extremely worried he is going to say they got it wrong or want to do more tests which will mean it could actually be something bad.

Is this a normal thing or just depending on the person.

Im so worried

Thank you

  • Welcome to our forum, Blister.

I’m sorry to hear about your situation.

While it is completely understandable why you are feeling so anxious right now, please try not to let fear take over. It is very common practice in clinics to book a follow-up appointment if the lead consultant was away on the day of your initial visit. Because you were seen by a different member of their team, this letter is highly likely to be a routine administrative step so the consultant can personally review your file, take into account your dense breast tissue, and ensure everything is documented correctly.

Dealing with the anxiety of a two-week wait for an appointment can be incredibly draining. To get a better understanding of how the system manages these timelines and what they mean, you might find it helpful to look through the information we have on our website about waiting times.

Hopefully, other forum members who have received a similar follow-up letter after a clear scan will reply to your post soon to offer some support and share how their appointments went.

If the stress feels too heavy to cope with on your own over the coming days, please remember you can always reach out to our nurses. They are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, between 9 am and 5 pm.

Once you know more, please come back to let us know how it all went. We’ll be thinking of you.

    Best wishes,
