Cancelled Colonoscopy and Waiting Worries

Hey folks again, posting a follow up to prior message regarding doing a qFIT test as situation has got rather messy and I think it would be helpful note down situation as it has unfolded in a way that got me a bit agitated.

As mentioned before I did a qFIT test and result came back as positive with 36ug/g score over two weeks ago now. Got scheduled to have a colonoscopy today (the time between doing the test and getting a scheduled appointment went by very speedily which was helpful and reassuring) but things have not gone quite to plan.

I was assigned some Plenvu to take as part of the preparation process alongside having a low fibre diet for a few days. The process was rather uncomfortable but I persisted through it (managed to get a few hours of sleep) but an hour or so after taking the second dose of it and drinking some clear liquids I vomited up some liquids and in process seems some of the Plenvu came out. I rang up the endoscopy department and mentioned this but because I said that I did seem to be going to the toilet super regularly and that it was broadly yellowish clear liquid despite the brown specs the staff member thought it was working. Nearer to the appointment I was a bit concerned that in addition to the clearer liquids some small sludgy brownish/yellowish faeces bits were coming out when I went to the toilet so thought it was best to take some photos of that.

When I got to the hospital and went through the initial conversation with nurse and showed him the aforementioned photos he said he would talk to another member of staff about this and came back to say that given the risks and issues of my bowels appearing not to have fully cleared out it was not worth doing the colonoscopy today and that another one would be arranged in the next two week period. He gave me an alternative prep which he said would be easier to consume, advised me to have a week long low fibre diet prep period (only had 3 or so days for this one because appointment was made last Thursday for today) and to take Senna to help with any general constipation that could have been a factor in prep not fully working for today. Staff were sympathetic fortunately.

I am a little bit agitated by all this but other major agitating aspect is that nurse mentioned to me that if there were any “sinister” (his word) looking things in the bowel that required a biopsy then the NHS waiting backlog is so bad where I live that I could be waiting up to 6 months to find out the results. He noticed that this news really startled me and was frustrated at that.

Am back home now and just trying to think through practical steps. Unsure whether I should be resuming liquids or eating anything soon or whether I should be waiting a bit longer in case there’s any leftover Plenvu effects to work through.

Had really hoped to get through this all as quickly as I could to try and focus on other life matters and to work on other health issues e.g. dealing with weight issues and generalised anxiety and prospect of having to wait 6 months to find out if anything is really bad has got me rather worried and I am a bit scared I will not be able to cope. Have friends, family and therapist to talk about all this but honestly feeling messy and really guilty about having got to this point, especially as my late mother had serious anxiety about my health and especially after she developed cancer herself and I feel I have done her a disservice in allowing this to happen.

A prior message on here suggested that the 36ug/g result was not that high and a friend said to me that the fact the department said my bloods were apparently fine in preparation for the colonoscopy was a good sign so I am trying to bear that all in mind, and I think that if I go ahead with making some lifestyle changes with help from friends then the situation might positively shift e.g. part of me thinks persistent irritation I noted was just skin in anal area rubbing more as a result of gained weight, but still feel rather frightened, frustrated and guilty.

  • Hi ,as someone said 36 is not a high number at all ,results can be in the high hundreds ,as far as Plenvu is concerned I know exactly what you mean ,the same thing happened to me whilst taking the second lot ,I vomited the whole lot ,the difference is I still went for the colonoscopy the next morning and it was fine ,and I got my results on the day which was nothing to worry about ,hopefully they will give you something that tastes less fowl next time and take your time drinking it ,I tried to rush mine down and that's what made me sick ,let us know how you get on ..

  • Hi TWill,

Waiting up to six months for biopsy results is beyond astonishing!

What a horrible prospect to be faced with, particularly after all the thoroughly unpleasant experiences you've endured so far.

This is indeed a frightening and frustrating ordeal for you. I'd feel exactly the same way if I was in your position. You have nothing to feel guilty about, nothing at all.

We all have many friends on this forum. We don't know who they are, but we do know they're there, silently supporting us in their thoughts.

I reckon anyone who reads your post will be thinking about you with great concern and heartfelt compassion.

    Warmest wishes.
