Bowel Cancer Symptoms. Petrified

Hello,

I am 36 and beyond terrified. I don’t know what else to do other than reach out here.

i have in the past noticed some blood when wiping after a bowel movement but of course, ignored it as it always went away and just put it down to piles.

Anyway, I had a bowel movement a few days ago and the amount of blood on the tissue when I wiped alarming however, the amount of blood that filled the bowel was stomach churning. I sat on the toilet frozen with fear for a good 10/15 minutes. I called my gp that morning who performed an examination and said she couldn’t see or feel any piles or fissures (I have had a fissure years ago so know how painful they are). I’m now currently waiting for a FIT sample and a likely colonoscopy to in her words “have a check for cancer”. Well, I’m SPIRALLING. I already suffer with health anxiety and this has crippled me. I’m not coping day to say what so ever. I’m CONVINCED I have bowel cancer and can’t stop crying. Since this bowel movement my tummy feels constantly a mild cramping sensation and I’m also very tired. I don’t know how to handle this waiting and the thought of me possibly having cancer is just unbearable.

I suppose I’m looking for any reassurance for someone who has experienced anything similar and it turned out to be something not sinister. I cannot get the amount of blood I saw out of my head. The sheer volume is convincing me something is very wrong. I am sobbing writing this.

Thank you for reading x

  • Hi and welcome to the forum. I haven't had the same experience as I was diagnosed with breast cancer, but I do know how it feels to hear the word cancer. It shakes you and you can't think of anything else. The waiting is difficult and it sounds as if you had a really frightening experience. Of course, it's hard to get the thought of it out of your head.

There is information about urgent assistance here -  What to do if you need urgent assistance  There is also assistance on the helpline 0808 800 4040 between 9 and 5 Monday to Friday where you could speak to a nurse and you will find links to email at the bottom of the page. They're not going to be able to tell you if you have cancer, but it might help to be able to speak to someone. I'm sorry I'm not able to help with your expeience but it's possible that someone else on the forum who knows more will see this and reply too. Gill xx
