My mum recently had her routine mammogram and I’m really anxious

My mum recently had her routine mammogram and has now received a letter asking her to go back for some more tests.

I know being called back doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong, and I’ve read that this can happen because they want a closer look at something or need additional images, but I’m struggling not to worry about it.

I suffer with health anxiety, so my mind is obviously jumping to the worst-case scenario, even though I know there could be many completely harmless reasons she’s been called back.

Has anyone else in the UK had this happen after a routine breast screening? What happened when you went back for the additional tests?

I’m probably just looking for some reassurance and other people’s experiences while we wait for her appointment.

  • Hi Justyouraveragevirgo,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that your mum has been recalled after a routine mammogram. This happened to me many years ago. I panicked, as I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer after a 12 year battle with the disease. Fortunately, the recall was because there was a slight change in my breast from the previous mammogram and nothing untoward was found. I had another mammogram and was given the all clear. It is impossible to predict what the outcome will be for your mum. If she needs further tests to establish this, they will be carried out.

I am sure that your mum is very anxious at the moment and she will appreciate any support that you can give her. I hope that she doesn't have too long to wait for her appointment. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for both of you.

Keeping my fingers crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

We are still in the hospital but my mum has messaged me saying that she’s had an ultrasound and they think she has 2 cyst on her right side. She had just had another mammogram and it’s waiting for the results now.

  • This really does sound hopeful. I trust that your mum feels more comfortable now that her cysts have been drained? This will still be an anxious wait until you get the actual results and are told that there's nothing to worry about.

I fully agree with Jenny and Chrissypaul's advice and hope that you will soon get the clarity you need from both the biopsy and her mammogram.

  • Thank you. It definitely feels a little easier now that we’ve actually had the appointment and have some more clarity. I’m still a little anxious about waiting for the biopsy results, but nowhere near as bad as I’ve felt over the past couple of weeks.

Hopefully the biopsy will just confirm what they already suspect. I’ll keep you updated when she gets her results.

Thank you again for being so kind and reassuring throughout all of this xx

  • She actually didn’t feel the cysts at all before, so she wasn’t in any discomfort from them. She’s a little sore now after having them drained and the biopsy, but otherwise she’s doing okay.

Hopefully the results will give us the clarity we’re hoping for. Thank you again for your kind words and support, I really appreciate it xx

  • Thank you! It definitely feels more reassuring now that we’ve had the appointment and know a bit more. I’m still going to worry until we get the actual results, but I’m nowhere near as anxious as I was before the appointment. Hopefully the biopsy will confirm that they’re just cysts. xx

  • Hi Justyouraveragevirgo,

Most of us are sore after a biopsy, but this gradually settles down. Unfortunately, none of us can truly relax, until the biopsy results are back. Here's hoping that nothing untoward is found.

  • Just an update regarding my mum. The breast clinic rang her this morning and said her biopsy results came back as benign and that they were cysts, which is obviously a relief. But she has to go back next Tuesday for further investigations. The nurse said there’s nothing to worry about, but I’m still feeling a bit anxious and wondering why she would need further testing if the biopsy results were benign. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

  • I am delighted to hear that your Mum's biopsy results were benign cysts and understand what a relief this is. Did the nurse say what further investigations were needed or what tests they intended to carry out? It is impossible to surmise why they want to see her again next Tuesday. Here's hoping that the nurse is right and there's nothing to worry about. Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for both of you.

  • Thank you. No the nurse didn’t say what tests she needed but she did say not to worry as she has already been a few times. But the nurse at her call back appointment did say she will need to come back once she’s got the biopsy results for another mammogram so maybe that’s why she needs to go back.
