Cervical screening/smear results

Hey all so ive been having some symptoms such as bleeding after sex, pain during sex and spotting in between periods for a few months. I went to the GP who made a referral on 9th july for gynecology pathway and colposcopy. I then attended for a smear test on 28th july which the nurse said my cervix is red. On 31st july I recieved a letter for a gynecology appointment on 10th august. Also on 31st July I had a nhs app notification for me to book my colposcopy appointment, earliest they had was october 2nd so ive booked this. However, with my gynecology appointment letter it included a leaflet about colposcopy that states "youve been referred due to abnormal cells being found on your smear". Im unsure if this is a generic leaflet they put inside the gynecology appointment letter in case you need a colposcopy and the gynecology appointment has simply been made following my appointment on the 9th or if my test results have come back usually quick and they've sent this leaflet on purpose. Has anyone had this before?

  • Hello HAC123 and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry you're having to wait a while for your colposcopy but I hope the appointment you have with the gynaecology department next week will be able to answer some of your questions and put your mind at ease about what's to come.

You can find out more about abnormal cervical cells on our website but if you'd like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to support you in the run up to both of your appointments.

I hope some of our members who have had a gynaecology appointment before their colposcopy will stop by soon to let you know if they received this leaflet too, but in the meantime our thoughts are with you and we're wishing you all the best for next week.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you for replying. The colposcopy appointment was not related to my smear results (smear was HPv negative) and instead linked to the referral for abnormal bleeding. The dr noted a partial ectropion and said everything looked healthy but then went onto take a punch biopsy which im awaiting the results for. Im just confused as to why a biopsy was needed if she felt everything looked fine and smear results were negative. This has led me to worry a little that maybe the dr did note something and did not want to say

I know theres been no replies but incase anyone finds the thread, I recieved the colposcopy report which stated "2 spots of hpv were seen on the cervix" however as noted previously my smear test was negative for hpv so slightly confused. I still havent recieved the biopsy results yet. At the colposcopy these 2 spots were not mentioned to me and the dr performing the colposcopy specifically said to me the cervix looks healthy and cant see any issues other than the partial ectropion so unsure why the report to the dr notes these 2 spots. Has anyone had similar and what did it turn out to be?

  • Hello hac123

I'm sorry to hear that there has been some confusion about your results. It's understandable that you have questions after being given conflicting information about the HPV results.

Do you have contact details for the clinic or Consultant? If so then don't be afraid to give them a call and ask if you can speak with someone or have an appointment to clarify things. Alternatively you can make an appointment to talk through your concerns with your GP who can always reach out to the hospital if more information is needed.

Our team of nurses are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 if it would help to talk things through with them.

I hope you get some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,
