Recent ultrasound - Glandular tissue

Hi,

Three weeks ago, I found a large mass right at the very top of my breast (around the 12 o’clock position). At one point, I even thought it was on my chest because my breasts are quite saggy.

Today I had an ultrasound, and the doctor told me it was “nothing to worry about - just glandular tissue.” At the time, I didn’t feel the need to ask any questions because I think I heard exactly what I had been hoping to hear. I felt so overwhelmed and just wanted to get home and see my family.

Now, though, I’m overthinking everything and wish I’d asked more questions. Why do I have it? Will it disappear? Are they certain it’s glandular tissue? What if there’s an actual lump or cancer hiding behind it? I know I’m probably spiralling because I’m naturally an anxious person and tend to overthink. The last three weeks have been incredibly stressful, and I’ve barely slept because of the anxiety.

The mass is quite large - about the size of a small egg. Has anyone else been told they had glandular tissue that felt like a lump, and everything turned out okay?

I just don’t understand why I don’t feel reassured. I’m struggling to understand why it appeared in the first place and whether it could cause problems in the future. The doctor said I should get back in touch if I notice any changes or have any concerns.

I’ve also been feeling a bit of pressure in that area and have an achy armpit. Has anyone else experienced something similar, or could this just be my anxiety making me more aware of everything?

One other thing that’s been playing on my mind: the doctor marked the area with a pen during the ultrasound, but when I got home I noticed the mark is actually below where I feel the mass. Has anyone else had this happen? Am I overthinking that too?

  • Hello Malina

I'm sorry to hear that you recently had some concerns about your breast health. You did exactly the right thing in seeing your GP, and I'm really pleased to hear that the breast clinic examined you and said that there was no further cause for concern.

It's easy to overthink these things, particularly if, as you've already shared, you struggle with anxiety as well. As you're still struggling with things, I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040. Alternatively you can always make another appointment with your GP to talk things through with them.

Hopefully you will get the reassurance you're seeking soon.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
