Suspected dyplastic nevus ? 8 week wait for biopsy results?

Hi everyone

I went to my GP in Mat with an (existing I think ?) mole that had turned black and gred jagged edges . For reference I am very pale and all my moles are light brown. I was referred urgently to the hospital where a dermatologist said  her impression was a dyplastic nevils - although I don’t recall her using a dermascope to come to that conclusion .

She decided to refer me for biopsy, which I had about 4 weeks ago .

The waiting is awful . I keep refreshing my NHS app and my emails , and checking to see if ive has any missed calls . It’s at the forefront of my mind constantly :( I only just received the letter to my gp which said the clinical diagnosis is Dysplastic nevus , to which I thought I was in the clear - but at the bottom it said pending histology, which was a let down . I called the clinic and they said it could be a further 4 weeks as they’re very busy in the summertime .

Has anyone been provisionally diagnose with a dysplastic nevus only for it to turn out to be worse ? Please be brutally honest. I have no idea what to expect .

THank you so much . All the love in the world

  • Hi Daisy,

I know how worrying the wait for results is - sometimes the worry causes more stress than the actual medical condition. Due to the long waiting times for results it's best to try and find a way that helps you deal with the stress and focus on that for now. Try meditation, Mindfulness, Yoga, long walks in the fresh air, singing, absorbing yourself in your favourite hobby (arts, crafts, genealogy - I even know someone who does Lego to switch off for an hour or two).

I have had several mole removals over the years since my melanoma diagnosis - some were thought to be dysplastic some were thought to be more serious - they turned out to be benign or dysplastic.

Approximately 10% of excised moles are melanoma, the rest are dysplastic (what we call 'ugly ducklings') or benign, so the odds are in your favour for it to be fine. If it is melanoma, it's hopefully been caught at an early stage (which the majority are) and it can be successfully treated.

So concentrate on other things to give your mind a break from the relentless worry. Take one step at a time & hopefully the results will be fine. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
