Possible Squamous Cell Carcinoma on face

Hello to everyone, I've just joined and am hoping to connect with and share thoughts and feeling with people, feeling very worried at the moment as I had a suspected squamous cell carcinoma removed from my face by incision one week ago today, has anyone else experienced this? I'm coping with the wound ok but am worried about my results when I go back in August...shout out out to our NHS though for the speed in which I was given my appointments and also for the care I have received for which I am so very grateful :-)

  • Hello Tatty2shoes

Sorry to hear you’ve had to go through surgery to your face for SCC. The scar will fade over time and you will become more used to it. Hopefully it was completely removed and that is an end to it. The important thing is that you very likely have other areas of sun damaged skin, which need protection from further UV sunlight exposure. If you don’t already do so, wear a hat whenever you are out, use sunscreen every day and long sleeved clothing. Avoid midday sun. Like you I have praise for the NHS treatment and care I am receiving for Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

  • Hiya and thank you for your supportive and positive reply. Yes I do use sunscreen and stay out of midday sun and have never been a sun worshipper although I can remember getting sunburn at the seaside many years ago. As you say it has has hopefully been completely removed and that is the end of it.

Sorry to hear of your own SCC, is it ok to ask you about it? I understand and respect if you would rather not discuss it though, also I m glad to hear that you are receiving good care and treatment from the NHS,

    Kind regards,

    Tatty

  • Hi again, I'm not sure if my reply got to you... I'm not very good at this at all! if it didn't get to you I'll try again tomorrow, take care

  • Hi Tatty2shoes

  • Hello Ed

Thanks for sharing that about your own personal experience, I don't have many questions really but as you say you have had many removed does that mean they spread? and could I also ask was it a slow process? of course I ask because this is something that worries me and I don't want to doom scroll! hopefully when I go to my next appointment I'll be able to have a more detailed discussion and will come away fully informed,

    Take care,

    Tatty

  • HI Tatty

Squamous Ceĺl Carcinoma of the skin dpes not normally spread although in my case it did. Its more that you are likely to have other areas of sun damaged skin that can develop into cancer. This is why it is important to avoid the sun and further damage. Wearing a wide brimmed hat can protect your head and face where youve had cancer removed. Take a look at my profile to see how important this is. Write down any questions before you next appointment which I hope goes well for you.

  • Hi Tatty2shoes,

I have had a few of these removed from different parts of my body. The one that worried me most was just in the crease below the eye. It was removed by a plastic surgeon, who said that he would try to hide the scar within this crease and, if he was unsuccessful, he would use plastic surgery to hide it, That was done about 12 years ago and it is not even noticeable now, as he did an excellent job of hiding the scar in my wrinkles. The wait for the biopsy results is always an anxious time, but not all results are cancerous.

We are so fortunate in the UK that these operations are carried out so swiftly and, by such caring staff. Try to keep yourself busy while you wait for the results. It doesn't matter whether this is with work or pleasure - anything to take your mind off the wait! I sincerely hope that your results will be favourable. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi and thank you for your message, I am very pleased to hear that your surgeon took such great care of you and that you cannot notice the scar, they are amazing aren't they?! and yes I agree that we are extremely fortunate here in the UK that treatment is carried out so swiftly, I gave a shout out to our wonderful NHS in my first post and they certainly deserve it. And yes again I am keeping busy with gardening, writing and scrapbooking, as you say not all results are cancerous but it can still be an anxious time, thanks again for your kind words and I hope to hear from you again soon it's good to support one another, take care
