Advice please - has anyone else experienced post menopausal bleeding?

Hi, I’ve recently had a slight bleed after 8 years post menopause, I had period pain too. I went to the docs who examined me and ordered bloods. The results have come back all in range but the CA125 aren’t due to be back until 22nd July, quite a long wait. Has anyone experienced post menopausal bleeding who wouldn’t mind sharing their experience please.

  • Hi Linda-S and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear you've had some post menopausal bleeding and for the worry this is causing.

Having to wait almost a month for your CA125 results to come back must be very tough but I hope this guide we have on how to cope with the wait for news will help and that some of our members who have been through this will stop by soon to share their experiences and advice.

If it would help to have a chat about this with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to support you whilst you wait.

We're here for you Linda-S and we'll have our fingers crossed for good news when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Linda I had a post menopausal bleed after 11 months. My bleed was 1 full bleed for 5 days of bright red blood like I had cut myself. The flow was heavy. No cramping or bloating then nothing afterwards. I was diagnosed with atypical hyper plasia of the endometrium. I have been told any bleeding after menopause should not be ignored. I hope you get some answers.

  • Hello Linda, I hope you are doing ok. I was where you were back in May and hearing from other people on here helped me a lot. This has been my experience and please feel free to ask me anything.

I had post menopausal bleeding in May, 15 months after my last period and have just gone through all the tests under the 2 week rule. I had felt a little off with slight breast pain before it started and it seemed to be what I experienced when still having periods. I ended up phoning 111 as it was a Friday evening and it was getting heavier and after a sleepless night I saw an on call gp the Saturday morning who asked me questions, did a urine test and said I’d need to see my gp first thing on Monday morning. I did and she explained I would be referred under the 2 week rule as they treat any post menopausal bleeding as cancer until it’s proven otherwise HOWEVER more times than not it will not be cancer. I was not prepared to see ‘suspected gynaecological cancer’ on my nhs app and was very upset. On the Tuesday morning I got a phone call from the gynaecology department at the hospital to see the consultant on the Thursday, super quick. I then had another phone call from the ultrasound department booking me for a scan but the scan wasn’t for 13 days. I’d read that it was best to have your scan done before your consultation if possible as the consultant would want to know the outcome of the scan. A friend was with me at that time and said to me to phone them back and say I’d like a cancellation appointment if possible. They took my details but I’d heard nothing by Wednesday morning so called again and the lady had no record I’d asked for a short notice cancellation and she said she’d already given some slots that morning so there were none left so to phone back later in the day. I rang again at 4pm and explained I had the consultant appointment the next afternoon and very luckily they’d had a cancellation for the next morning which I then got. I would recommend phoning the ultrasound department for cancellations as I hadn’t realised this was possible and it meant my consultant would have the info she needed. I had that scan the Thursday morning and then went to the consultant appointment that afternoon where she could see my scan showed a thickened lining and wanted to do a hysteroscopy and biopsy there and then. I’d been told to take paracetamol an hour before the appointment so I had done. She also told me I had the right to ask for it to be done under a general anaesthetic but that would take longer waiting for a slot. I chose to attempt to do it there and then as I wanted to know what was going on. Unfortunately due to having uterine ablation around 10 years ago it proved too difficult for her to carry it out without it being very uncomfortable as I had scar tissue across the opening so she needed to try to dilate the opening first. I never got to the in pain stage but it was getting uncomfortable and she made the call to stop and refer me for a general anaesthetic procedure. From there I had to go to get blood tests and then I went home to wait for another call. I got a slot on 1st June exactly 2 weeks from my initial doctors appointment for my general anaesthetic hysteroscopy which I thought was amazing. My results took 2 weeks and it was tough going through the waiting. My results were no cancer found however there was no clear answer why it had happened so I have a follow up appointment on 21st July to hopefully get some answers. I would say it has definitely been the most stressful thing I have been through and I have had skin cancer and also an op to remove my colon. Be kind to yourself and feel all the feelings. This forum was a godsend to me. I also realised that the internet is not your friend and once I banned myself from Google my anxiety lowered. Best of luck x
