Post Menopausal Bleeding

Hi

Last night (Friday) I had some light brown discharge.  There is also slightly brighter brown/red when I insert my finger into my vagina (apologies if TMI!) but no further discharge as yet.  I’m 55 years old and it’s been over 3 years since my last period.  I’m terrified it’s cancer.  I spoke to the 111 service and she recommended I get a BV test kit, which indicated trichomoniasis which as I’ve not been sexually active suggests it’s not the most accurate result.  I will phone my GP on Monday but I’m already seeing a psychologist for health anxiety so this is my nightmare come true.

I live on my own, I don’t have anyone I can talk to (friends were never really my thing!) and my family have passed away over the last few years so I’m very isolated.  I just thought it might be helpful to reach out via this forum for connection.

Thank you for reading this.

  • About 6 weeks ago I had the same symptoms. I am 74 and my last period was many years ago. I waited a few days but then saw blood again and continued to have a bloody discharge every 6 days. I rang my gp and managed to get in the same day. 6 weeks on, i have had numerous tests and scans and been told i have stage 2 endometrial cancer. I am awaiting the cancer teams decision this week to tell me if i will be having a hysterectomy or, if the cancer has already spread, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A complete bolt out of the blue. My life feels completely out of my control now. Please see a doctor as a matter of urgency.

  • Oh my goodness I’m so sorry you are going through this and thank you for sharing. So many emotions for you to process and you’re right, the loss of control is one of the things that scares me.

I will definitely make an appointment on Monday.

  • Please go to the doctors. I had a post menopause bleed after 11 months I have pre cancerous cells. My bleed was bright red and for 5 days. Be brave and come on here or ring the nurses I did. The waiting for results is the worst. Please do not be alone. We are all here for you xxxx

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to respond-I really appreciate it.  I hope you are doing okay following your diagnosis?  I have a GP appointment on Friday but as you say the waiting is torture xx

  • Hello. Im up and down with my diagnosis. I try and take each process a step at a time. Glad you got your appointment that is one step in the right direction. X

  • Hi Maybelle , sorry that you and others are going through this . It is a difficult  and worrying time . You need to get an urgent appointment with your GP and explain your symptoms . Less than 10 per cent of cases of post menopausal bleeding are due to cancer , so the odds are in your favour . Benign reasons can be vaginal atrophy , polyps etc . You should then be put on a  2 week pathway for a scan . You won’t necessarily get this within 14 days , but should get an appointment date within this time frame .

I am a bit further along than you . I have had the GP appointment and then an abdominal scan . I was phoned an hour after the scan to say my womb lining was enlarged at  6mm and I am now waiting on a hospital appointment for a biopsy

I hate all the waiting . I don’t deal well with uncertainty and am worrying that I may not have anyone to go with me to the hospital .

  • Sorry Janet for your diagnosis . I hope that you find out what treatment you are able to get soon .

It is difficult dealing with the uncertainty and hanging around . I hope you have support around you and are able to have sone distractions . I like going out for walks along the river , when it isn’t  raining .

  • Dollysocks , I hope that you have  got a treatment plan and are getting well looked after .

  • Hello Cat Cat. Ive been booked for a pre op assessment on Monday then hysterectomy on Wednesday with 1 weeks notice!!!.... A total whirlwind and im unsure if im mentally prepared, but I feel I should take the opportunity as I may have a longer wait. Will see when I attend the pre op. My concern is the results after they take the womb. I cannot fault the NHS as the service ive received so far it's been really good x

The uncertainty and the waiting is horrendous and what maybe a short time feels like eternity but, once you get the results you know what you are dealing with.

I hope you find someone to attend the hospital with you. Ive always had to attend appointments and tests alone and sometimes you get fed up with coping with it all.

Let us know how you get on xxxx

  • Thanks Dollysocks . That must be daunting to face a hysterectomy and it’s good that you have a pre - op visit on Monday . Hopefully you get the chance to ask any questions and be reassured about the op . I always find it useful to prepare and write down questions . But I know we are all different and some  people don’t want to know all the details .

Whilst that is a very quick turnaround for you , I think the alternative of waiting ( and worrying ) is much worse .

I hope that you have somethings to distract you over the coming days , even if watching something comforting  on the tv .

I am sorry to hear that you have had to go to the appointments on your own . That must have been very hard especially when you got the diagnosis and the practicalities of coming back from the hospital . How long do you have to stay in hospital after the Weds op ? Do you have someone who can collect you from hospital ?

Nothing new for me am religiously checking the post for my next appointment letter , feeling a bit frustrated when nothing there but also secretly a bit relieved too , as don’t have to face the reality written in black and white .

I think we are all going through so many different emotions .
